Asthma's impact on brain function: an investigation of changes in functional connectivity and network topology.

Asthma is a reversible condition characterized by airflow limitation and chronic airway inflammation. Previous neuroimaging studies have confirmed brain structural and functional abnormalities associated with asthma, primarily occurring in regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex, superior frontal gyrus, occipital lobe, postcentral gyrus, and corpus callosum. These changes may be attributable to asthma-related systemic inflammation. This study investigates modifications in the topological organization of functional brain networks in individuals with asthma using functional magnetic resona

Effects of fronto-occipital transcranial alternating current stimulation for treating schizophrenia with prominent negative symptoms: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Developing novel technologies to effectively alleviate negative symptoms of schizophrenia remains challenging. While non-invasive brain stimulation targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has shown potential, its outcomes have been inconsistent. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), which modulates specific frequency synchronization across long-range brain networks, offers new insights into optimizing the therapeutic efficacy for negative symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy and safety of a 7 Hz, right DLPFC-occipital tACS protocol for negative

Surgery of Pineal and Pineal Region Tumours: The Sub-Occipital Transtentorial Approach for Pineal Tumours: How We Do It in Lyon.

The sub-occipital transtentorial approach for pineal and pineal region tumours is reported as realized in Lyon. The approach described by C. Lapras is still performed today with a large skin flap and a large bone flap, which is sawn flush with the superior longitudinal sinus and the transverse sinus. The large bone flap allows elevation and separation of the hemisphere, avoiding its compression against the internal edge of the parietal bone.Opening the tentorium allows broad visualization of the pineal region space and of the venous arch formed by the basilar veins and the Galen vein.Protecting

Machine learning and regional homogeneity reveal early and subtle brain changes in type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) usually begins early in life, and its development impacts brain functioning and cognitive processing. The present study examined alterations in spontaneous brain activity in young adults with T1DM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five T1DM participants and thirty-five matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). Between-group comparisons and correl

Emergency burr-hole evacuation for subacute SDH with uncal herniation: a case report of near-complete neurological recovery despite bilateral occipital infarction.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Subacute subdural hematoma (SDH) can remain clinically silent before progressing to fatal herniation. Bilateral fixed dilated pupils in the setting of SDH are traditionally regarded as a near-terminal sign, associated with poor outcomes. Reports of near-complete neurological recovery despite established uncal herniation remain exceedingly rare. This case highlights the importance of rapid decompression as a "brain code" intervention in potentially reversible mass lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 47-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of

Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and tyrosine kinase gene fusions (FIP1L1::PDGFRA) complicated by Loeffler's endocarditis leading to stroke.

Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and tyrosine kinase gene fusions (MLN-TK) represent a distinct category of hematologic malignancies characterized by eosinophil-rich proliferations driven by specific gene rearrangements. Among these, the FIP1L1::PDGFRA fusion is one of the most clinically relevant due to its exquisite sensitivity to imatinib. Loeffler's endocarditis, a complication of eosinophil-mediated endomyocardial damage, can lead to thromboembolic events including ischemic stroke. We report a case of a 56-year-old male who presented with acute onset of right homonymous hemian

Intracerebral papillary ependymoma in a cow.

Intracranial neoplasms are rare in cattle. Bovine ependymomas have been reported only sporadically, with limited morphologic descriptions and, to our knowledge, without immunohistochemical characterization. Here, we describe the gross, histologic, and immunophenotypic features of a papillary ependymoma in the brain of a 7.5-y-old cow that was a bovine spongiform encephalopathy suspect. Grossly, a large, intraparenchymal, well-demarcated mass occupied the left cerebral hemisphere, extending from the frontal to the occipital lobe and communicating with the left lateral ventricle. Histologically,

Occipitotemporal connections: redefining the inferior longitudinal fasciculus through fiber dissection and diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) is a major occipitotemporal white matter bundle involved in higher-order visual and cognitive functions. However, its anatomical consistency, structural organization, and distinction from adjacent tracts remain controversial. The aim of this study was to address these debates by investigating the dual nature of occipitotemporal connections, refining the classification of ILF subcomponents, and reassessing the inclusion of the dorsolateral occipital cortex component (DLOCC) in the ILF. METHODS: Cadaveric dissection was performed on 10 hemis

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-associated cytomegalovirus encephalitis: clinical, imaging, and follow-up characteristics of 11 cases.

BACKGROUND: Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are susceptible to cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection due to compromised immune function, with CMV encephalitis carrying high mortality especially in those with extremely low CD4⁺ T-lymphocyte counts (<50 cells/µL). Current literature consists primarily of case reports and small cross-sectional studies, lacking large-scale systematic analyses and longitudinal follow-up. This study aims to investigate the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of AIDS patients with CMV encephalitis, providing evidence for ea

Visual Epilepsy Mimicking Migraine Aura Leading to Delayed Diagnosis of an Occipital Cavernoma: A Case Report.

Cerebral cavernous malformations, also known as cavernomas, are uncommon vascular malformations that may present with seizures, headache, or focal neurologic deficits depending on lesion location. Occipital cavernomas are rare and may manifest with positive visual phenomena, thereby mimicking migraine aura and delaying diagnosis. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman who presented in March 2018 with recurrent brief visual episodes described as flashing lights, colored shapes, scotomas, and distortion of object contours, associated with a persistent headache. She was initially treated for m

Microbial enterotype is linked to episodic and working memories via brain function in the parietal and occipital cortices.

BACKGROUND: Classification of human gut microbiome into distinct enterotypes based on gut microbial community composition has provided an attractive framework for population stratification. While empirical evidence indicates that microbial enterotype is related to brain function and memory, the neural processes underlying this interaction remain to be further characterized. RESULTS: In 510 healthy young adults, we used 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing to perform enterotyping, acquired resting-state functional MRI data to calculate brain functional measures, and assessed both episodic and working

An 18-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET study in SGCE positive and negative myoclonus-dystonia.

Myoclonus-dystonia is a hyperkinetic movement disorder, and approximately half of myoclonus-dystonia patients have a mutation in the epsilon-sarcoglycan (SGCE) gene, while the remaining cases often have undetermined causative genes. This study aims to assess brain metabolic function in myoclonus-dystonia patients with and without SGCE mutations and compare them with a control group. This study is part of the Next Move in Movement Disorders observational study. We included 23 myoclonus-dystonia patients (11 with SGCE mutations and 12 without) and 23 age-matched controls. Participants underwent

Frontal Delta Decreasing and Occipital Ictal Alpha Increasing Associated With Migraine in Preictal and Ictal Phases.

Subtle changes across different migraine phases in resting electroencephalography (EEG) studies are commonly observed in migraine patients and have the potential to aid in clinical diagnosis. However, exploring the dynamic changes of brain activity across the migraine phases are extremely rare and difficult to analyze. This study aimed to longitudinally investigate the EEG spectral characteristics across the migraine phases in a paired EEG study. Ninety-five episodic migraine (EM) patients without aura and 59 control subjects participated in the study, and the resting close-eye EEG signals wer

Differences in cortical gyrification and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations between early- and late-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is heterogeneous, and differences in age at onset may be associated with important feature of distinct subtype. However, no studies have investigated the differences between early- and late-onset OCD using structural and functional multimodal neuroimaging methods that reflect different neurobiological backgrounds. METHODS: Structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from 130 participants (76 medication-free patients with OCD and 54 healthy controls (HCs)). We investigated group differences among early- a

Free water, occipital volume and changes in depressive symptoms in the LifeAfter90 study.

Though depression impacts over 10% of the oldest-old, the contribution of brain health on changes in depression is unknown. This study included 225 participants from LifeAfter90 with magnetic resonance imaging, amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), and repeated Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) data. We fit linear mixed-effects models for associations of neuroimaging markers with depressive symptom change adjusted for age, gender, race and ethnicity, and education. At baseline, average GDS scores were 2.6 (SD = 2.3) out of 15 possible points, average age was 93.3 (SD = 2.3) years, 56% fem

[A case of acute ethylene glycol poisoning complicated with acute cerebral infarction].

Ingestion of ethylene glycol-based antifreeze can lead to multi-organ dysfunction, most often presenting with reversible neurological impairment involving the basal ganglia or temporal lobes. Neurological symptoms and imaging abnormalities of patients typically resolve within several days. However, persistent symptoms associated with cerebral infarction in the parietal-occipital region are exceedingly rare. This article reports a case of cerebral infarction caused by poisoning due to massive ethylene glycol ingestion. The patient developed impaired consciousness and convulsions approximately s

Can Category-selective Cortex Predict Categorization Behavior?

One of the distinctive features of the human visual system is the presence in occipito-temporal cortex (OTC) of regions that show preferential activation to specific categories of visual objects. To understand how this selectivity relates to categorization behavior, studies have employed a distance-to-bound (DTB) approach, where multivariate brain activity is used to estimate a decision boundary, from which behavioral performance can be predicted. Using this approach, correlations have been found between activity in OTC and behavioral performance when carrying out certain categorization tasks.

Report-modulated prefrontal activity and consistent posterior representations during conscious visual perception.

Understanding whether prefrontal cortex is necessary for conscious experience remains central to ongoing debates between global workspace and recurrent processing theories of consciousness. To dissociate neural processes underlying perceptual awareness from those related to report and access, we combined report and no-report visual masking paradigms with magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize the spatiotemporal and network dynamics of visual awareness. Across both report and no-report conditions, early and sustained responses emerged in occipital and temporal cortices, beginning at ∼60-7
