Postmortem Changes in Skin Appendages of Domestic Dogs: A Preliminary Comparative Histological Study Between Body Regions, and Possible Forensic Implications.

This study describes postmortem histological changes in skin appendages of domestic dogs in the first seven days after death. The objective was to document the progression of autolytic change in the sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles and to compare it between body regions and sides. Skin samples were collected bilaterally from the neck, thorax, abdomen, and thigh of nine dog carcasses (female, non-pedigree, short-haired, 5-10 years old, ~10 kg). The carcasses were kept at 10-12 °C in Karditsa, Greece, and sampled at 0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 h postmortem. S

Promoting the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment with a student-led program: a retrospective review of 713 patient visits' characteristics and outcomes.

CONTEXT: Early clinical exposure (ECE), especially within osteopathic medicine, helps bridge the gap between medical theory and practical skills by giving students the chance to apply osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) early in their training. This enhances their competency and builds a stronger connection to osteopathic principles. Current literature highlights that the early use of OMT in osteopathic institutions motivates students to continue utilizing their skill set, yet few programs offer real-world, hands-on experience outside of lectures and practicals. This paper describes and e

ScanSeg: Policy-Guided Sequential Prompting for Dense Fine-Grained Ultrasound Segmentation.

Dense fine-grained segmentation on standardized ultrasound planes is clinically essential but remains challenging because multiple anatomical structures coexist under speckle noise, acoustic shadowing, weak boundaries, and partial visibility. Promptable foundation models can produce high-quality masks when queried, but they typically return one structure at a time and lack a mechanism to automatically decide what to segment next and where additional evidence is needed, making single-shot "auto" outputs brittle on complex planes. This paper introduces ScanSeg, a scan-inspired framework that for

Radiation Dose Assessment in Routine Adult Computed Tomography Examinations: A Multi-center Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in diagnosing and imaging various body structures, but it continues to be one of the most frequent sources of medical radiation exposure. Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) represent critical values for radiation dose monitoring and dose optimization. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate levels of radiation dose in adult routine CT examinations in Saudi Arabia and establish local diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for head, chest, and abdomen/pelvis CT studies. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cross-sectional analysis invol

TACTICAL1 Trial Protocol: Targeted Abdominal CT in Conjunction with Lung Cancer Screening to Identify Kidney Cancer and Other Abdominal Conditions: A Randomised Controlled Pilot Study.

Screening for kidney cancer and other serious abdominal conditions in conjunction with lung cancer screening (LCS) is potentially feasible and cost-effective. Targeted Abdominal CT in Conjunction with Lung Cancer Screening (TACTICAL1) aims to pilot this integrated screening model in a real-world setting to inform a future large-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT). TACTICAL1 is a pilot study, with embedded process evaluation, of adding abdominal noncontrast computed tomography (CT; ANCCT) to low-dose CT (LDCT) thorax amongst ever smokers aged 55-70 yr at high risk of lung cancer who were at

When the abdomen misleads: Emphysematous pyelonephritis masquerading as pneumoperitoneum.

A presentation in septic shock with tense abdominal distension and left flank pain, combined with a plain radiograph showing massive subdiaphragmatic free air usually suggests perforation of a hollow viscus. A CT scan obtained before laparotomy was undertaken, showing gas destroying the left renal parenchyma with extension into the pararenal space and rupture through the posterior parietal peritoneum with an intact gastrointestinal tract. Laparotomy was thus avoided; pneumoperitoneum is not always gastrointestinal in origin.

Can the functional assessment of abdominal, diaphragmatic, and pelvic floor muscles reflect post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence severity?

BACKGROUND: Post-prostatectomy incontinence can substantially impair patients' quality of life. While rehabilitation typically targets the pelvic floor muscles, the role of the diaphragm and deep abdominal muscles is under-explored. This study aimed to determine the utility of evaluating and managing the transversus abdominis (TrA), diaphragm, and levator ani muscle (LAM) to facilitate post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence recovery. METHODS: This single-center observational cohort study included 90 patients. During post-prostatectomy rehabilitation, we regularly assessed muscle capacity usi

Disseminated cryptococcosis with extensive cutaneous involvement in a previously healthy adult: a rare case report.

Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals but may also cause disseminated disease in previously healthy individuals. We report a previously healthy 31-year-old man who developed extensive infiltrated erythematous papules and plaques after granulomatous mesenteric lymphadenitis presenting as acute abdomen. Skin biopsy revealed encapsulated yeast forms consistent with cryptococcosis, although fungal culture was negative. Imaging demonstrated pulmonary, lymphatic, and hepatobiliary involvement. HIV testing was negative, and no kno

Sequential Barrier Navigation by Yeast β-Glucan-Engineered Liposomal Nanovaccines Potentiates Oral Melanoma Immunotherapy.

PURPOSE: Orally delivered protein antigens face gastrointestinal degradation and inefficient transport through mucus, across the intestinal epithelium, and into antigen-presenting cells (APCs). To address these barriers, we developed YGB@OVA/PBA-C-LIPs, an ovalbumin (OVA)-loaded cationic liposomal nanovaccine coated with yeast β-glucan (YGB) and functionalized with phenylboronic acid (PBA). METHODS: We characterized the physicochemical properties of YGB@OVA/PBA-C-LIPs and evaluated their mucus and epithelial transport, macrophage uptake, OVA cross-presentation, and immune activation in vitro.

Rapid Pain Reduction and Wound Closure Following Treatment With an Amorphous Silica-Based Fiber Wound Matrix in Partial-Thickness Thermal Burns: A Case Report.

Partial-thickness thermal burns can cause substantial pain and require effective wound management to support re-epithelialization. A 30-year-old man sustained 3%-4% total body surface area partial-thickness burns of the left hand, forearm, elbow, and abdomen following a gasoline-accelerated brush fire. Despite emergency debridement, dressings, and multimodal analgesia, pain remained 6-10/10. Approximately two days after injury, an amorphous silica-based fiber (SBF) wound matrix was applied to the open wounds, while a silica-based cream (SBC) was applied to surrounding intact skin. At initial S

Impact of reduced scan extent on tumor detection in 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT for biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: PSMA PET/CT plays an important role in biochemically recurrent prostate cancer (BCR-PCa). In general, PET/CT is performed as a limited or true whole-body examination. The majority of PET/CT scanners operate by measuring several bed positions or continuous motion with a limited axial field of view (FOV). Shortening the scan area thus results in a time saving, with unknown information loss regarding the detection of tumor manifestations. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective single-center study included 200 patients with BCR-PCa after initial curative therapy who underwent a 68Ga-PSMA-PET

Routinely available perioperative variables and EHR-captured postoperative adverse-event indicators after adult abdominal surgery: A retrospective cohort study using MOVER EPIC.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative electronic health record (EHR) datasets are increasingly used to study postoperative morbidity, although database-recorded adverse-event indicators may not correspond to standardized complication endpoints. We characterized these indicators after adult abdominal surgery in MOVER EPIC and examined associations with routinely available perioperative variables. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study identified adult abdominal surgical encounters from 2017-2022 through procedure-name screening and case-level deduplication. The primary outcome was a broad composite of E

Self-Subcutaneous Injection of Elemental Mercury: A Report of a Rare Case From Pakistan.

Deliberate subcutaneous injection of mercury by a mentally healthy individual is rare. It has been frequently reported in individuals with severe depressive disorders during suicide attempts, as well as among athletes seeking performance enhancement and in certain contexts related to sexual gratification. Here, we present the case of a 28-year-old male patient who deliberately self-injected mercury subcutaneously into his abdomen that led to the formation of a painful induration/abscess in the midline of the abdomen. X-ray of the abdomen showed multiple subcutaneous radio-opaque deposits. A su

Anatomical Correction of Adult Intestinal Malrotation Using Kareem's Procedure: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal malrotation (IM) is a congenital defect in midgut rotation or fixation that results in abnormal positioning of the bowel. Although most cases present during infancy, adult presentation is uncommon and may be misdiagnosed. Kareem's procedure is an anatomical corrective approach described for gut malrotation; however, evidence regarding its use remains limited. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old female presented with sudden, severe, colicky central abdominal pain associated with non-bilious vomiting and complete constipation for 10 hours. She had experienced a similar self-
