Using a smart compression sleeve to measure ergonomic risk in automotive manufacturing.

BackgroundWork-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a significant concern in industrial settings, where repetitive and awkward movements contribute to ergonomic risk. Quantifying this risk allows for a better understanding of operator movement patterns and potential adjustments that can aid in injury risk mitigation.ObjectiveTraditional observational methods, specifically the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), provide ergonomic risk assessments but are limited by observer subjectivity and an inability to calculate movement durations. With wearable technology, precise kinematic and te

Circumstances of fall-related fracture events among men in late life.

UNLABELLED: Among older men, most fractures occur in late life and are fall-related. We followed 1469 late-life (average age 90 years) men for 3 years to characterize the circumstances of 160 incident fall-related fracture events. Most were due to minimal trauma and occurred indoors when the activity level was normal or less. INTRODUCTION: Of fractures in older men, most are fall-related and occur in men 80 years and older. To better guide the development of fracture prevention approaches in late-life men, detailed information on fall-related fracture events was collected in a cohort of 1469

Deep learning-driven fine-resolution finger movement recognition from surface EMG signals.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) has emerged as an impactful tool for controlling advanced prosthetic devices by detecting and recording muscle electrical activity during motion. This study presents a unique technique for recognizing nine distinct classes of finger movements by utilizing the Ninapro database. To address an underexplored domain of upper-limb prosthetic control, this research targets fine-resolution individual finger movements rather than the broad range of hand gestures. A custom-made one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) was developed and validated using a withi

Review of publication barriers in upper limb absence rehabilitation: A protocol for innovative literature macro-analyses.

A preliminary review of the literature suggested that rehabilitation programs for upper limb absence (ULA) may be constrained by several publication barriers. Typically, clusters of publications concentrating on a particular topic may be analyzed utilizing bibliometric or scientometric approaches. Practically, these conventional methods might be inadequate to examine these barriers as the literature about ULA rehabilitation includes hundreds of publications. The purpose of this review protocol was to introduce new literature macro-analyses utilizing ratio-based metrics to characterize the alle

Variable task difficulty with augmented sensory feedback for motor training in virtual reality.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined how motor task difficulty and augmented sensory feedback (ASF) modality influence task performance, physiological responses, and perceptual experience during virtual reality (VR)-based upper-limb motor training. Building on related brace- and VR-based ASF platforms previously examined in neurotypical and spinal cord injury cohorts, the long-term goal is to support neurorehabilitation-oriented adaptive VR training; however, the present study used neurotypical participants as an initial validation step. METHODS: Fourteen right-handed neurotypical participants u

Heterologous contralateral repeated bout effect: eccentric knee extensor conditioning enhances neuromuscular fatigue resistance and attenuates muscle stiffness in contralateral elbow flexors in young women.

BACKGROUND: The repeated bout effect (RBE) protects skeletal muscles from exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). While homologous contralateral RBE is well-documented, the existence of heterologous RBE-specifically whether lower limb conditioning can protect upper limb muscles-remains debated. PURPOSE: This study investigated whether high-intensity eccentric exercise of the knee extensors attenuates eccentric exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue and muscle stiffness and preserves neuromuscular control in the contralateral elbow flexors. METHODS: Twenty-four sedentary young women were rando

Individualized Prediction of Patient-Defined Treatment Success to Support Patient-Centered Clinical Decision-Making.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical prediction models often target generic thresholds for treatment success, such as the Minimal Important Change. The Personal Meaningful Gain was introduced as a personalized threshold, capturing the improvement an individual seeks to achieve in a self-chosen domain to become satisfied with the treatment results. This study developed and internally validated a treatment-conditional prediction model estimating the probability of achieving the PMG within 3 months in patients with common hand and wrist conditions. METHODS: This study used real-world data from 25 specialized han

Capitate Reconstruction Using the Second Metatarsal Head for Avascular Necrosis: Long-Term Clinical Validation of an Anatomically Matched Osteochondral Reconstruction.

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the capitate is a rare entity, and reconstruction of the capitate head remains challenging because restoration of lunocapitate articular congruity is difficult, particularly in advanced cases. A recent anatomical equivalence study demonstrated that the second metatarsal head (2MH) closely matches the capitate head with respect to key articular parameters. We report a case of capitate head reconstruction using a free vascularized 2MH osteochondral graft in a patient with recalcitrant AVN, who developed severe collapse of the capitate head following a failed pedicled

The impact of socioeconomic deprivation on outcomes following open upper-limb fractures.

Socioeconomic deprivation is associated with increased trauma burden and poorer outcomes following open fractures. However, its impact on open upper-limb fractures remains unclear. This study examined whether socioeconomic deprivation influenced physiological status at presentation, Injury Severity Score and Gustilo-Anderson grade, time to surgical debridement, and early postoperative outcomes in patients treated within a regional major trauma network. We performed a retrospective cohort study using a prospectively maintained regional trauma registry at a Level I Major Trauma Centre. Consecuti

Reticulospinal hyperexcitability after stroke: Associations with impairment severity and no evidence of functional advantage in severe cases.

OBJECTIVE: Reticulospinal tract (RST) excitability increases after stroke. Although animal studies suggest that this hyperexcitability may compensate for corticospinal tract damage, its role in motor function in persons with stroke (PwS) remains debated. This study aimed to replicate RST hyperexcitability in PwS using the StartReact paradigm, examine associations with motor impairment, and explore whether heightened responses were associated with functional benefit in a subgroup with severe upper-limb impairment. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 46 PwS and 37 healthy controls completed

Pruritus-dominant herpes zoster with concurrent contralateral upper limb pain in a patient with complete spinal cord injury: A case report.

CONTEXT: Sensory impairment after spinal cord injury (SCI) may complicate herpes zoster (HZ) recognition. FINDINGS: A 76-year-old man with complete T4* paraplegia developed pruritus and vesicles in the right T4 dermatome without eruption-site pain. The asterisk denotes adjustment for stroke-related left upper-limb weakness. Empiric intravenous acyclovir preceded dermatology assessment. Contralateral shoulder and hand pain developed the day after eruption and was absent on the final treatment day. CONCLUSION/CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Focal pruritus warrants skin examination. When HZ is strongly sus

Atypical presentation of subclavian steal syndrome mimicking transient ischemic attack: successful endovascular management with angiographic correlation-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Subclavian steal syndrome is an uncommon vascular disorder caused by stenosis or occlusion of the subclavian artery proximal to the vertebral artery origin. It classically presents with vertebrobasilar symptoms such as vertigo, syncope, or diplopia; however, atypical transient neurological presentations may delay diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old patient presented with recurrent slurred speech and left upper limb weakness without vertigo or diplopia. Examination revealed absent measurable blood pressure and absent radial pulse in the left arm, carotid bruits, and mild di

Transient focal neurological episodes in cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage (cSAH) is recognized as a cause of transient focal neurological episodes. These episodes can closely mimic transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). We report a case of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA)-related cSAH presenting with recurrent transient monoparesis. CASE DESCRIPTION: An elderly patient with a history of hypertension was admitted to our hospital because of recurrent episodes of transient left upper limb monoparesis. Initial diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) demonstrated a focal hyperintensity over the right frontal convexi
