PURPOSE: Lymph node density(LND) has been shown to be a better prognosticator than conventional nodal classification to predict prognosis for squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) of the oral cavity. However, studies focusing on subsites of oral cancer are meager. The role of LND for buccal SCC was evaluated in this study.
METHODS: A total of 39 patients with buccal SCC primarily treated surgically with neck dissection were identified. LND was defined as the number of positive nodes over the number of nodal yield. The cut-off of LND was ≤0.07 or >0.07. Patient demographic data and clincopathologic par

Given the potential relationship between head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and microbial dysbiosis, we profiled the microbiome within healthy normal and tumorous (primary and metastatic) human tissues from the oral cavity, larynx-pharynx, and lymph nodes using 16S rRNA sequencing. Alpha and beta diversity analyses revealed that normal tissues had the greatest richness in community diversity, while the metastatic populations were most closely related to one another. Compared to the normal, the microbiota associated with tumors supported altered abundances in the phyla Fusobacteria,

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The incidence of occult perifacial nodal disease in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma is not well reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of isolated perifacial lymph node metastasis in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma with a clinically node-negative neck. The study will shed light on current controversies and will provide valuable clinical and pathological information in the practice of routine comprehensive removal of these lymph node pads in selective neck dissection in the node-negative neck.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of head and neck pathologies on the detection rate, configuration and diameter of the thoracic duct (TD) and right lymphatic duct (RLD) in computed tomography (CT) of the head and neck.
METHODS: One hundred ninety-seven patients were divided into the subgroups "Работает", "benign disease" and "malignant disease". The interpretation of the images was performed at a slice thickness of 3 mm in the axial and coronal plane. In each case we looked for the distal part of the TD and RLD respectively and subsequently evaluated their conf

BACKGROUND: The use of lymphatic vessel density as a predictor of occult lymph node metastasis (OLNM) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has never been reported.
METHODS: Staining of the specific lymphatic endothelial cells nuclear marker, PROX1, as an indicator of lymphatic vessel density was determined by counting the number of positive cells in squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the oral cavity and the oropharynx with clinically negative necks. Correlation with histopathological data was established.
RESULTS: Peritumoral PROX1 lymphatic nuclear count significantly correlated

BACKGROUND: Tumour thickness is a strong predictor for cervical node involvement in oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), with a recent meta-analysis concluding a 4-mm optimal prognostic cut-off point. No consensus has been reached for the tumour thickness cut-off for oral tongue SCCs.
METHODS: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from 112 patients by the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre (Australia) with primary oral tongue SCC was conducted. Tumour thickness was measured by standard histopathological techniques and cervical node involvement was determined either from ne

BACKGROUND/AIM: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are usually diagnosed with advanced disease and multimodality therapies are required, as well as prognostic biomarkers to predict their response and assess survival. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the ability and clinical significance of the immune biomarker sIL-2R in HNC patients, to assess therapy response and prognosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 328 blood samples from 145 head and neck cancer patients (HNC) from several subgroups: 84 larynx carcinomas pre- and 39 post-therapy, 46 oral cavity carcinomas pre- and 29 post-ther

BACKGROUND: Prognostic lymph node yield thresholds have been identified and incorporated into treatment guidelines for multiple cancer sites, but not for oral cancer. The objective of this study was to identify optimal thresholds in elective and therapeutic neck dissection for oral cavity cancers.
METHODS: Patients with oral cavity cancers in the National Cancer Database (NCDB) were stratified into clinically lymph node-negative (cN0) and clinically lymph node-positive (cN+) cohorts to reflect the differing surgical management for these diseases. Univariate and multivariate analyses were perf

A 73-year-old man diagnosed with Merkel cell carcinoma of the left nasal ala was referred for preoperative scintigraphic sentinel lymph node mapping. In three separate foci around the lesion, 0.2 mCi of Tc-sulfur colloid was intradermally administered. Planar images demonstrated accumulation of tracer midway between the nose and left ear. SPECT/CT images localized radiotracer uptake to the left buccinator/buccal space, consistent with a buccinator lymph node, which is an inconsistent part of the facial lymphatic drainage. This case illustrates the added value of SPECT/CT and 3D reconstruction

The reliability of the sentinel lymph node (SN) technique has been established for more than ten years in T1-T2 oral cavity and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma. Although most authors stress the necessity of rigorous implementation, there are no agreed guidelines. Moreover, other indications have been described, in other anatomical areas of the upper aerodigestive tract and in case of previous surgery or radiotherapy. SN expert teams, under the GETTEC head and neck tumor study group, conducted a review of the key points for implementation in head and neck cancers through guidelines and a rev

Syphilis is a widespread infection with increasing frequency in developed countries, especially among men who have sex with men. We present two cases of oropharyngeal syphilis in two middle-aged men who presented with a painless tonsillar ulcer and progressive enlargement of cervical lymph nodes suspected of being a tonsillar tumour. A pathologic analysis of the ulcer led to an accurate diagnosis. We review the imaging and pathologic findings to emphasize the importance of taking syphilis into account in the differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Oncologic transoral robotic surgery (TORS) requires in most cases the concurrent or staged surgical treatment of the regional lymph nodes in the neck as well. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the timing of the regional lymphadenectomy (neck dissection) has an impact on the surgical outcomes and on the complication rates.
METHODS: Single-institution, prospective case series with internal control group. Twenty-one patients underwent TORS and appropriate neck dissection concurrently (control group), while 20 patients underwent neck dissection in a timely staged fash

Kimura's disease is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder with an unknown etiology which presents with the involvements of salivary glands and subdermal tissue in the head or neck region, in particular. Besides the most common manifestations of the disease; as the involvements of preauricular region, submandibular region, cervical lymph nodes and major salivary glands, nephrotic syndrome, as an additional systemic pathology, may be also seen due to glomerulonephritis. The differential diagnosis is made with the identification of characteristic histological features as follicular hyperplasia, eo

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a fairly common tumor of the oral cavity. This tumor may affect any part of the mucosa of the oral cavity especially the tongue, the floor of the mouth and lips. The encountered intra-oral defects after tumor resection are often large and require climbing up the reconstruction ladder to more complex reconstructive options for accepted functional and cosmetic results to be achieved. However, most of the patients are old with medical co-morbidities requiring fast, simple, less morbid reconstructive option such as local flaps. The myocutaneous submenta
