Anatomy of the Upper Lip and Nose Muscular Bundle Tendon and Its Application During Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair.

BACKGROUND: While several authors have previously described the anatomy of the nasolabial muscles in patients with unilateral cleft lip, some personal intraoperative findings may provide additional information on this topic. The aim of this study is to describe the anatomy and histopathology of the tendon of the upper lip and nose muscle bundle on the cleft side and the role of myrtiform muscles during primary repair of the unilateral cleft lip. METHODS: The anatomy of this structure has been described during primary cleft lip repair, and small pieces of the muscle and tendon of the upper lip

Philtral Ridge Repair with Nasolabial Muscle Reconstruction in Unilateral Microform Cleft Lip: Evaluation Based on Three-Dimensional Anthropometry.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral microform cleft lip presents with subtle but characteristic philtral deformities. Conventional repair techniques often yield conspicuous scarring or inadequate reconstruction of the underlying musculature and philtral contour. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of philtral ridge repair with small-incision nasolabial muscle reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with unilateral microform cleft lip who underwent primary repair at our institute between September 2020 and October 2023. The procedure involved a small incision at the v

Root Migration After Coronectomy of a Mandibular Third Molar With the Inferior Alveolar Nerve Passing Between the Roots: A Case Report.

Extraction of mandibular third molars (MTMs) is one of the most common procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It carries a risk of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury, which may result in altered or lost sensation of the lower lip, chin, teeth, and gingiva. Coronectomy, a surgical technique in which the crown is removed while the vital roots are retained, has been proposed to reduce this risk in cases with close root-nerve proximity. We report the case of a 41-year-old female patient in whom cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed the IAN coursing between the roots of an MTM. Cor

Bleomycin-based electrochemotherapy for recurrent oral CD8-positive epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma in a dog with durable local control and necrotic regional lymph node changes: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Oral epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma (ETCL) is an uncommon form of canine cutaneous lymphoma involving the oral mucosa and mucocutaneous junctions. Information regarding optimal treatment strategies and prognosis is limited. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) has demonstrated efficacy against various cutaneous and subcutaneous tumors in dogs and cats; however, reports describing its use for canine oral ETCL are scarce. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old male Beagle presented with multiple nodular lesions involving the right maxillary gingiva, buccal mucosa, and mandibular gingiva. Histopathol

Nasal Sidewall Propeller Flap for 1-stage Reconstruction of Lateral Nasal Ala Defects.

Cutaneous carcinomas of the lateral nasal ala, sometimes extending to the upper lip triangle, frequently require superficial or full-thickness resections. Despite their small size, these defects present a significant reconstructive challenge due to the 3-dimensional anatomy and high functional and aesthetic demands of the nasal region. We describe a 1-stage reconstructive technique using a nasal sidewall propeller flap (NSPF), a freestyle perforator flap harvested from the homolateral nasal sidewall, based on perforators from the facial or internal nasal artery. When needed, the NSPF is combin

Witteveen-Kolk Syndrome: Two Patients With Craniofacial Features and Novel SIN3A Variants.

Witteveen-Kolk syndrome (WKS) is a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic SIN3A variants, with diagnosis complicated by variable physical findings. We describe two unrelated patients with de novo SIN3A variants identified through trio whole exome sequencing, expanding the phenotype of WKS. Patient 1, a 16-year-old female, presented with bilateral cleft lip and palate, retained primary teeth, and horseshoe kidney: findings not previously reported in WKS. Patient 2, a 5-year-old male, exhibited macrocephaly and obesity, also novel to the WKS phenotype. These fin

Fed-batch bioreactor intensifies degradation and detoxification of anthraquinone dyes by an immobilized white-rot fungal consortium.

The textile industry produces enormous quantities of highly polluted wastewater that is usually contaminated with recalcitrant dyes, salts, and toxic metals; hence, it urgently requires efficient and sustainable treatment strategies. Considering the above scenario, mycoremediation using an immobilized white rot fungal consortium (WRFC) of Trametes cubensis OR394063, Polyporus umbellatus OR398647, Leiotrametes flavida MTCC 12927, and Pleurotus pulmonarius MTCC 1805 was used in the present study to treat Anthraquinone (AQ) dye-induced synthetic textile effluent (STE) in batch, continuous, and fe

Surface-extraction MRI of the fetal brain: an improved approach for diagnosing anomalies associated with antenatal absence of the septum pellucidum.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal imaging is crucial for evaluating neurological development in cases of absence of septum pellucidum (ASP), which may be associated with a spectrum of cortical, cerebellar and ocular anomalies and variable neurodevelopmental outcomes. Recent advances in fetal MRI techniques have improved the detection and characterization of subtle brain abnormalities. CASE REPORT: A pregnant patient was referred to our tertiary centre for targeted neurosonography at 28weeks of gestation, confirming ASP initially considered isolated. Fetal MRI at 33 weeks suspected associated cortical ma

Chitosan-Coated Oleuropein Nanoliposomes Enable Dose-Sparing Suppression of Serum Inflammatory Markers in a TNF-α-Induced Vascular Inflammation Model.

Vascular inflammation, marked by endothelial dysfunction and overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), is a key contributor to atherosclerosis. Oleuropein (Ole), a phenolic compound with proven anti-inflammatory properties, suffers from poor aqueous stability and limited oral bioavailability, constraining its clinical application. To overcome these limitations, we developed and optimized chitosan (CS)-coated liposomes for oral delivery of Ole. Using a Box-Behnken design, the optimized formulation exhibited a particl

Relationships between speech-in-noise comprehension, lip reading ability and cortical speech tracking in talking avatars as well as natural talking heads.

In noisy listening environments, visual cues from a speaker's face can significantly boost speech comprehension. The underlying audiovisual integration in the brain involves tracking of audiovisual speech features in the temporal lobe. Moreover, lip reading in silence is associated with tracking of the speech envelope in the low-delta frequency band (0.5-1 Hz). Recently, digital avatars have emerged that can support speech comprehension. Yet, it remains unclear how the human brain integrates such artificial visual signals with natural speech. Here, we employed magnetoencephalography (MEG) to m

Left Atrial Appendage Closure Versus Oral Anticoagulation for Prevention of Stroke or Systemic Embolism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: An Updated Meta-Analysis of 7004 Patients Across Six Randomized Trials.

INTRODUCTION: Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is an emerging alternative for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who are unsuitable for long-term oral anticoagulants (OACs). However, its efficacy and safety relative to OACs remain uncertain. METHODS: Three databases were searched up to April 7, 2026, for randomized controlled trials comparing LAAC with OAC in patients with AF. Risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals were pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Six RCTs (n = 7004 patients) were analyzed. The risk of stroke or systemic embolism (SSE) did no

A Rare Case of Pyogenic Granuloma on the Lip in a 10-Year-Old Girl: Case Report and Literature Review.

Oral pyogenic granulomas (PGs) are well documented in the literature and are a commonly encountered lesion in routine clinical practice. However, their extragingival occurrence is rare and often has an unusual presentation. The clinical diagnosis of uncommon extragingival PG can be quite challenging. In the present case report, a 10-year-old female presented with a soft, tender swelling of 2 × 1.5 centimetres, which was pink, smooth-surfaced, sessile, and prone to bleeding and was provisionally diagnosed as PG. The excision was performed using a minimally invasive treatment modality of 980-nm
