Atypical Presentation of Ludwig Angina: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Complications in a Rare Case.

Finding the clinical significance of facial swelling was of utmost importance in this case. Ludwig angina is a life-threatening cellulitis of the floor of the mouth that is mainly due to infectious causes. This particular patient had an atypical presentation except for the facial swelling in which the patient's non-specific symptoms made it difficult to obtain a diagnosis. Severe edema can make it difficult to intubate the patient; however, our case did not present with any common symptoms such as this. This is why it is of utmost importance to maintain dental/mouth hygiene and maintenance bec

Is ductoplasty required following transoral sialolithotomy? - A case series.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine if there was a difference in postoperative outcomes and complications between patients who underwent traditional two-layer closure (ductoplasty and floor of mouth) after Wharton's duct sialolithatomy during hybrid sialendoscopy compared to those who underwent single layer closure of only the floor of mouth. METHODS: Retrospective case series of a single surgeon's patients who underwent hybrid sialendoscopy at an urban tertiary care hospital. Demographic, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative information was collected from patients who underwe

The key role of magnetic resonance sialography in the differential diagnosis between sialolith and phlebolith of the floor of the mouth.

BACKGROUND: The confusion between a phlebolith and a sialolith in the floor of the mouth can pose serious surgical risks, making it essential to define appropriate complementary imaging studies. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a patient with right submandibular sialolithiasis suspected by computed tomography. A previous attempt at extraction in another centre, under local anesthesia, was interrupted due to profuse bleeding, preventing the localization and removal of the calculi. Due to our pre-surgical study protocol using magnetic resonance sialography (MR-Si), a low-flow vascular

De-escalated surgery following neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy for locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There remains considerable debate regarding whether the extent of surgery can be reduced in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with significant tumor shrinkage after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy. This study aims to report the feasibility and oncological safety of de-escalated surgery (DES) following neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in locally advanced OSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected clinical data of patients with locally advanced OSCC (T3-4 N0-3 M0) treated at our cancer center between November 2019 and July 2023 who received platinum-based doublet chemotherapy combined

How to Do a Split Mentalis Muscle Flap for Central Marginal Mandibular Defects.

Tumors of the central mandible requiring marginal mandibulectomy and floor of mouth resection require reconstruction for cosmetic and functional purposes. Numerous reconstructive techniques have been described for small-moderate sized defects of the central mandible/anterior floor of mouth. Robust local flaps have been well described; however second stage procedures are required for pedicle division. The split mentalis muscle flap is a simple, quick and low morbidity option for central mandibular defects and has been demonstrated effectively with the use of a split skin graft. We provide a mod

Frequency and Characteristics of Craniomaxillofacial Tumors: A Five-Year Retrospective Institutional Study.

Background: Hospital-based data can complement registry estimates for cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) oncology, particularly in under-reported regions. We aimed to describe the institutional case-mix of CMF tumor diagnoses, standardized to ICD-10 sites, and to quantify trends using visit-normalized indicators. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, single-center, hospital-based study of diagnosis-level encounters (2012-2016). Diagnoses were recoded to ICD-10 and restricted to CMF sites (lip, oral cavity, major salivary glands, oropharynx/hypopharynx, nasal cavity/middle ear, paranasa

The INDEPSO-ISPSM Consensus on Peritoneal Malignancies-Diagnosis and Management of Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

We systematically reviewed published economic evaluations of systemic antifungal therapies and assessed their strengths and weaknesses. The study identified all economic evaluations published before May 2002 and critically appraised their methods using a published checklist. Over 1000 papers on antifungal treatments and costs were retrieved, 40 of which were economic evaluations. Fifteen of these were evaluations of systemic antifungal therapy. The majority of studies examined prophylaxis (11 out of 15), two examined empiric treatment and two examined the treatment of confirmed infections. Met

Palisading Adenocarcinoma: Several New Inherited Cases in Six Patients of a Familial Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The past two decades have seen the introduction of several new variants of established salivary gland tumors, along with occasional, entirely novel entities. Palisading adenocarcinoma was described in 2023 with a handful of subsequent additional case reports. We encountered several seemingly inherited cases of palisading adenocarcinoma in a familial cohort. METHODS: Within the affected family, all available archival surgical pathology and cytopathology material was retrieved and reviewed. Clinical history was obtained through chart review. Whole-exome sequencing was performed on

Demographic, clinicopathological, and treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients at a Johannesburg Academic Hospital, South Africa: a 5-year retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) comprises most oral malignancies worldwide and is closely associated with modifiable risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use. Late-stage presentation is common and contributes significantly to poor treatment outcomes. This study aimed to delineate demographic, clinicopathological features, and radiation-induced toxicities among OSCC patients treated at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) between 2014 and 2019. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional review of 119 histologically confirmed OSCC cases was conducted. Data

Pattern of Mandibular Bone Invasion as a Prognostic Factor.

Background/Objectives: Mandibular bone invasion is a common and clinically relevant feature of OSCC, particularly in tumors of the lower alveolus, floor of mouth, and retromolar trigone. The prognostic value of the pattern of invasion-rather than its mere presence-remains insufficiently defined. Therefore, we evaluated the prognostic relevance of erosive vs. infiltrative mandibular invasion and the diagnostic reliability of preoperative CT. Methods: This retrospective, single-center observational cohort study included 83 patients with OSCC involving or adjacent to the mandible who underwent su

ANRIL regulates retinoblastoma progression via targeting autophagy by miR-328-3p/TSC1/ULK signaling.

Obese female Zucker rats (fa/fa) are sterile. Among their reproductive abnormalities is hyporesponsiveness to the stimulatory effects of ovarian steroid hormones on sexual behaviors. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that obese Zucker females are deficient in hypothalamic/preoptic area estrogen receptors (ERs) and/or estradiol-induced progestin receptors (PRs). Ovariectomized (OVX) lean and obese Zucker rats were tested for the display of sexual behaviors following injection of estradiol benzoate (EB, 15 or 100 microg/kg) plus progesterone (P, 2 mg/kg). As expected, obese females

Role of serum eosinophil cationic protein in distinct endotypes of chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels affect the surgical outcome of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyps. Primary CRS can be classified into type 2 (T2) and non-T2. We aimed to differentiate the role of serum ECP levels in surgical outcomes between the distinct endotypes of primary CRS. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients with bilateral primary CRS who underwent surgical treatment with postoperative follow-up for at least 12 months. Endotyping and serum parameter measurements were completed within 1 week before surgery. RESULTS: In total, 113 patients

Impact of tumor subsite on survival outcomes in oral squamous cell carcinoma: A retrospective cohort study from 2000 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is responsible for high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although the oral cavity encompasses different anatomical subsites, it is unclear whether subsite localization of carcinoma influences outcome. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS) and local recurrence-free survival (L-RFS) at different subsites by Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was performed to investigate the impact of subsite on overall death, locoregional recurrence, and loc
