Rethinking Group B Streptococcus: The Rise of Sequence Type 283 as a Foodborne Zoonotic Pathogen.

Streptococcus agalactiae, or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) sequence type 283 (ST283), has emerged as a foodborne zoonotic pathogen of increasing concern, particularly in Southeast Asia. It gained global recognition following a major outbreak in Singapore in 2015, where it caused severe invasive infections such as meningitis, septic arthritis, and bacteremia, even in previously healthy adults, and was linked to the consumption of raw freshwater fish. Since then, outbreaks and sporadic cases of ST283 have been reported in China and Southeast Asia, with incidental reports in a growing number of cou

In vitro comparative evaluation of disinfectant-loaded nanoparticles against biofilm-forming Vibrio spp. isolated from gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata).

This study evaluated the in vitro efficacy of antimicrobial and antibiofilm of three disinfectant-loaded nanoparticles (AgNPs-H₂O₂, CuNPs-Virkon S, and CuNPs-TH4) against Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio fluvialis, isolated from naturally infected gilthead seabream in Egypt. Qualitative Congo red assay showed that V. fluvialis isolates were strong biofilm producers, whereas V. alginolyticus showed limited phenotypic variation. Quantitative assay results, analyzed with a Mann-Whitney U test, showed no statistically significant difference in overall biofilm biomass between V. alginolyticus and V.

Fecal virome at the human-animal interface: a one health perspective on an uncharted frontier.

The exponential growth of the human population and associated intensifications in animal farming, pet ownership, and habitat anthropisation have dramatically increased human-animal interactions. Global livestock production now exceeds 24 billion animals annually, and pet ownership has risen to over 70% of households in many developed nations, creating unprecedented interfaces for viral exchange. This heightened contact has multiplied opportunities for zoonotic and reverse-zoonotic transmission, as tragically exemplified by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The fecal virome—defined as the totality of vi

Deletion of NS6 attenuates Porcine Deltacoronavirus pathogenicity without compromising immunogenicity.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a major enteric pathogen that inflicts lethal diarrhea in sucking piglets. In this study, we constructed an infectious cDNA clone of PDCoV strain JS2021-LX using a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) system and generated a recombinant virus (rPDCoV-ΔNS6-EGFP) by replacing NS6 gene with an EGFP reporter via CRISPR/Cas9. In vitro analyses revealed that rPDCoV-ΔNS6-EGFP exhibited attenuated replication kinetics and formed smaller plaque compared to both the parental PDCoV and rescued PDCoV (rPDCoV). Furthermore, we observed that infection with rPDCoV-ΔNS6‑EGF

Staphylococcus aureus sequence type 71 is a chimera that emerged twice.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive coccus that colonises or infects humans and a wide range of domestic and wild animals. Various lineages of S. aureus are adapted to ruminants, including cattle, where they commonly cause mastitis. This is of significant animal welfare and economic relevance. Clonal complex (CC) 97 is one of the S. aureus lineages found predominantly in bovines, but also in other animals and humans. Sequence Type (ST) 71 is a related bovine-associated lineage with part of its genome identical to CC97. Thus, it has been assumed that ST71 was a chimera consisti

[Progress and application of bacteriophages in the prevention and control of zoonotic bacterial diseases].

Zoonotic pathogens pose a grave threat to the development of animal husbandry and human health. As antibiotics have been extensively and excessively utilized, the issue of bacterial resistance has intensified. Bacteriophage therapy for bacterial infections has regained prominence due to its strong specificity and low propensity for developing bacterial resistance. However, constraints persist in the clinical application of bacteriophage therapy. By interrupting transmission routes, bacteriophages offer broader prospects for preventing and controlling the infection and dissemination of zoonotic

Duration of anti-seizure medicines started for acute symptomatic seizures due to acute meningitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute symptomatic seizures (ASS), a frequent complication of meningitis, are potentially life-threatening and are a predictor of epilepsy if not managed appropriately. The optimal duration of anti-seizure medicines (ASM) in these patients remains unclear. This systematic review evaluates the evidence for earlier versus later cessation of ASM in patients with meningitis who experience ASS. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across Medline via OVID, Embase via OVID, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Eligible studies included randomized c

Molecular characterization of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from UTIs and the antimicrobial activity of biosynthesized selenium nanocomposites.

The spread of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) is a growing public health concern. The objectives of this study were to determine the pathotypes, virulotypes, genotypes, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of ESBL-producing E. coli isolated from patients with UTI in Egypt and evaluate the bactericidal efficacy of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and selenium nanocomposites (SeNCs) against multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates. We characterized 20 ESBL-producing E. coli from 41 clinical isolates recovered from urine and stool o

Emergence of a carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST15-KL19 clone with elevated virulence potential in a tertiary hospital in China.

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) has become a significant global health concern. The convergence of carbapenem resistance and elevated virulence potential has led to increasingly difficult-to-treat K. pneumoniae strains. Among these, ST15 is an expanding global high-risk clone, yet variants with elevated virulence potential carrying the KL19 capsular type remain rarely reported. METHODS: In this study, we characterized the phenotypic and genomic features of a carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae ST15-KL19 clone exhibiting elevated virulence potential, isolated fro

[Coxiella burnetii in small ruminants - managing the zoonotic pathogen].

Q fever, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, is a globally distributed zoonosis for which ruminants are considered to be the main reservoir. In Germany, the majority of human Q fever cases are linked to small ruminants. Epidemiological investigations show clear regional differences in herd prevalence, with higher detection rates in southern Germany, particularly associated with out-of-season lambing. Diagnosis in animals relies on both indirect (primarily ELISA) and direct pathogen detection (primarily PCR), although neither method can confirm the pathogen-free st

Cyromazine accelerates the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes by promoting the conjugative transfer of the SXT integrative conjugative element.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent public health challenge, and the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) mediated by mobile genetic elements (MGEs) accelerates its spread worldwide. Despite the recognized role of integrative conjugative elements (ICEs) in conjugative gene transfer, ICE-mediated horizontal gene transfer (HGT) remains underexplored, particularly for SXT ICEs, which are widely disseminated and relevant to animal and human health. Cyromazine, a widely used veterinary drug frequently detected in livestock feces and associated environments, is linked

Cellular lncRNA reprogramming induced by Brucella Omp19 and functional analysis of inflammation-related lncRNA MIR99AHG.

The outer membrane protein 19 of Brucellais a key virulence factor that modulates host immune responses; however, its regulatory impact on long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression remains poorly understood. In this study, we used RNA sequencing to analyze the lncRNA and mRNA expression profiles following Omp19 overexpression in HEK293 cells. We identified 645 differentially expressed lncRNAs (304 upregulated, 341 downregulated) and 114 differentially expressed mRNAs (102 upregulated, 12 downregulated). Bioinformatics analysis revealed significant enrichment of target genes in apoptosis, NF-κB s

Genotypic and phenotypic evidence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase-producing shigatoxigenic and intimin-producing Escherichia coli in diarrheic calves in Bangladesh: A hidden zoonotic and public health risk.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a pathotype of E. coli associated with a wide variety of diarrhoea in neonatal calves, causing a global economic loss in the dairy industry with significant zoonotic risks via STEC and intimin-producing STEC, resulting in enteric and systemic illness, including diarrhoea, haemorrhagic colitis (HC), and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in humans. The presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) STEC in neonatal diarrhoeic calves represents a significant public health concern and limits available therapeutic options. This study investigated the presence

Construction and immunogenicity evaluation of avian Escherichia coli-derived bacterial biomimetic vesicles displaying H9 subtype avian influenza virus HA1 protein.

Co-infection with H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) and avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is common in poultry, yet no vaccine is currently available that simultaneously prevents both infections. Biomimetic bacterial vesicles (BBVs) derived from avian E. coli are a platform for delivering heterologous subunit antigens. In this study, an antigen display strategy was adopted, which involved the genetic fusion of the H9 hemagglutinin subunit HA1 to the outer membrane-anchored protein cytolysin A (ClyA), followed by high-pressure homogenization to prepare BBV-HA1. Intranasal immuniza

Campylobacteriosis in India: Beyond gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter species, particularly Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, are among the leading global causes of bacterial gastroenteritis and are primarily transmitted through contaminated food, water and animal products. Despite their recognised role in enteric infections, the broader clinical and public health significance of Campylobacter remains underappreciated, particularly in developing countries such as India. Beyond gastrointestinal illness, these pathogens are increasingly associated with a range of extraintestinal complications, including bacteremia, neurological

Probing the zooarchaeological record across time and space for ancient pathogen DNA.

Zoonoses are among the greatest threats to human health, with many zoonotic pathogens believed to have emerged following the Neolithic transition. Palaeomicrobiological investigations of the zooarchaeological record hold potential to uncover the reservoirs, host ranges, and host adaptations of zoonotic pathogens in the past, but face challenges in identifying promising specimens and pathogen DNA preservation. We perform palaeopathological and genetic examinations of 346 skeletal elements from domesticated and wild animals collected from 34 Eurasian sites dating across the last six millennia. W
