Controversy still surrounds the human serum albumin (HSA) method for separation of X- and Y-bearing human spermatozoa. There is doubt about whether the procedure does enrich sperm samples for the chosen sex chromosome. We have applied the HSA separation method in a clinic in Hong Kong, using the method as described by Ericsson et al. [Nature, 246, 421-424 (1973)] taking care to keep the sperm recovery to <5% of the initial number. 17 samples of total cell DNA isolated from cervical smears from women suspected of condyloma or papilloma were analysed by PCR with appropriate primers, in order to establish the presence of viral DNAs (HPV and/or HCMV). HPV DNA was found in seven cases, and so was for HCMV DNA. Only in three cases a coinfection was present. The RFLP allowed to specify the involvement of HPV6 in 3 cases suspected of condyloma and in one suspected of papilloma; the other three HPV positive samples had another genotype, which we could not determine by the methods used.

How do intercellular signals that pattern cell fates vary in evolution? During nematode vulva development, precursor cells acquire one of three fates in a pattern centered around the gonadal anchor cell. Genetic influences on the timing of three pubertal events--vaginal opening, first vaginal cornification, and onset of cyclicity--were studied in C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, and C3H/HeJ mice and in two F1 hybrid strains (B6D2F1 and B6C3HF1).
