BACKGROUND: There are several studies on thyroid functions and thyroid gland features in patients with leprosy in the literature. The relationship between them have not been clarified yet. These studies are time-expired and don't contain ultrasonography examination. The purpose of the study is to investigate thyroid functions and gland characteristics in leprosy patients by ultrasonography (US) and current laboratory techniques.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by collecting the data of patients with lepramatous leprosy. Serum thyroid-stimulating hormone, free trii

Histoid leprosy is an uncommon variant of lepromatous leprosy. It poses a diagnostic challenge because of its distinctive clinical and histopathological features. It presents as smooth papules and nodules that rarely ulcerate. We present the case of a 22-year-old Nigerian man with a 2-year history of multiple, dome-shaped papules and nodules on the skin with necrotic centres. General examination showed right axillary lymphadenopathy, non-pitting oedema, foot ulcer, and glove and stocking sensation loss. Despite previous misdiagnoses, histopathological examination showed dermal expansion by his

Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae), primarily manifests with cutaneous and peripheral nerve involvement. Systemic involvement, particularly in the bone marrow, is exceedingly rare. This report presents a case of lepromatous leprosy with bone marrow involvement, emphasizing the systemic nature of the disease and the importance of comprehensive diagnostic and management approaches. We aim to present a case of lepromatous leprosy with bone marrow involvement, detailing the clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and management approach. A 65-year-old male with lepromatous l

Our knowledge of how society viewed leprosy and treated its victims in the past is still scarce, especially in geographical regions and archaeological periods from where no written sources are available. To fill in some research gaps, we provide the comparative analysis of five previously described, probable cases with leprosy from the Avar-period Trans-Tisza region (Hungary). The five skeletons were subject to a detailed macromorphological (re-)evaluation. Where possible, the biological and social consequences of having leprosy were reconstructed based on the observed bony changes and mortuar

Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, even though treatable, remains a significant public health problem. It mainly impacts the skin, peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes. In this case report, we present the case of a 64-year-old female with numerous hypopigmented patches with loss of sensations, madarosis, resorption of toes and digits, skin tightening, and diminution of vision. The skin over the hands exhibited thickening, leading to functional impairments that influenced both manual dexterity and mobility. The diagnosis of th

Leprosy, an infectious disease known for its debilitating effects on the skin and nerves, can trigger immunologic reactions affecting multiple organs. We present the case of a 57-year-old male who developed acute glomerulonephritis following leprosy treatment. Clinical examination revealed newly developed pitting edema in the legs, along with residual nerve thickening and skin changes. Laboratory findings showed elevated serum creatinine (3.2mg/dl) accompanied by low C3 and C4 levels. Urinalysis supported the diagnosis of glomerulonephritis. Renal biopsy demonstrated immune complex deposition

Hansen's disease is caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The clinical presentation of lepromatous leprosy is broad, affecting patients with reduced T-cell immune response and causing anergy. Usually, the patient presents with numerous red to brown nodules over the face and auricles and is diagnosed by skin biopsy. We hereby report an unusual case of a 40-year-old man who presented with altered sensorium and fever. Lepromatous leprosy was diagnosed initially in the bone marrow aspiration without any clinical suspicion or previous skin biopsy confirmation. Bone marrow infiltration by lepra bacilli is

Background and objective Hansen's disease, also known as leprosy, is a chronic granulomatous condition caused by Mycobacterium leprae, primarily affecting the skin and peripheral nerves. The disease has a wide spectrum of clinical and histopathological manifestations, often mimicking other inflammatory and infectious conditions. This variability poses significant challenges in its early diagnosis and management. Aligning clinical suspicion with histopathological evidence is critical for effective treatment and control of transmission. This study was designed to explore the concordance between

This report documents the first known cases of lepromatous leprosy in patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) linked to a gain-of-function mutation in the STAT1 gene. Two related patients, a mother and daughter, who both suffer from CMC and lepromatous leprosy, carry a heterozygous STAT1 mutation (c.821G>A; p.R274Q). Both individuals exhibited similarly high levels of total and phosphorylated STAT1 in CD4+ T cells and decreased interleukin 17A transcripts. This mutation underscores a complex relationship between genetic susceptibility to infections and the necessity to evaluate e

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 lepromatous reaction is a severe complication triggered by proinflammatory cytokines, it affects patients with lepromatous leprosy and border lepromatous leprosy. This reaction can occur before, during, or after treatment.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of acute polyarthritis as type 2 lepromatous reaction debut. A 30-year-old male with a history of Hansen's disease 5 years ago received a complete therapeutic regimen with cure criteria. Consulted due to a 3-day history of arthralgia predominantly affecting the hands, knees, and feet. On the fifth day of hospitalization, th

BACKGROUND: Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is a curable, chronic contact infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It mainly affects human skin and nerves and can cause progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs, eyes and is of great concern to the medical community.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old Han Chinese female patient presented to our hospital with 11 years of recurrent erythema and pain in the limbs and face, which was aggravated by fever for 6 days. The patient had an 11-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Initially, lupus was considered to be a

Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae complex, remains a significant global health concern despite being curable with multidrug therapy. Delayed diagnosis is common, particularly in non-endemic regions or when presenting with atypical symptoms. This can lead to missed opportunities for early intervention, potential disabilities, and increased transmission. Misdiagnosis is often compounded by leprosy's ability to mimic other conditions, as illustrated in this case report. We present a 43-year-old Filipino woman residing in Eastern Saudi Arabia, who presented to a

A young male in his late 20s presented with brownish discolouration of the conjunctiva and periocular area of both eyes. He was diagnosed as a case of lepromatous leprosy with recurrent type II lepra reaction 4 years ago and was started on multidrug therapy-multi bacillary, which included clofazimine. The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Examination revealed reddish-brown discolouration of the facial skin including the periorbital area and the eyelids, brownish discolouration of the conjunctiva with shiny sub-conjunctival deposits and multiple polychromatic refractile cryst

Lepra reactions are acute episodic inflammatory reactions that occur during illness due to abrupt changes in the body's immunological response against Mycobacterium leprae. These are of two types, type 1 and type 2. Type 2 reaction is also called Erythema Nodosum Leprosum (ENL). The common skin lesion in ENL is a red, tender, raised lesion. Subcutaneous nodules can also appear. The skin lesions may present as vesicles, pustules, or bulla. They can also develop ulcers and become necrotic. Some patients may experience skin lesions that resemble those seen in erythema multiforme. A rare desquamat

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2) infection appeared for the first time in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and in March 2020 it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Thus, a new disease was registered-COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019). Our study followed the patients who had the diagnosis of obstructive ventilatory dysfunction in their personal pathological antecedents, who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. The patients were in the hospital records with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. After discha

Leprosy is a global health issue, causing long-term functional morbidity and stigma. Rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important; however, early diagnosis is often challenging, especially in nonendemic areas. Here, we report a case of borderline lepromatous leprosy accompanied by dapsone-induced (neutropenia, anemia, and methemoglobinemia) and clofazimine-induced (skin discoloration and ichthyosis) side effects and type 1 leprosy reactions during administration of the multidrug therapy. The patient completely recovered without developing any deformities or visual impairment. To ens
