Vascular Phenotyping with Photoacoustic and Ultrasound Imaging in Cardiovascular Disease: Recent Innovations.

We studied the malaria transmission dynamics in Kassena Nankana district (KND), a site in northern Ghana proposed for testing malaria vaccines. Intensive mosquito sampling for 1 year using human landing catches in three micro-ecological sites (irrigated, lowland and rocky highland) yielded 18 228 mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Anopheles funestus constituted 94.3% of the total collection with 76.8% captured from the irrigated communities. Other species collected but in relatively few numbers were Anopheles pharoensis (5.4%) and Anopheles rufipes (0.3%). Molecular analysis of 728 An. gam

Clinical and Functional Outcomes of Bone Defect Reconstruction Using the Masquelet Technique: Experience with Rare Talus and Metatarsal Cases.

BACKGROUND: Segmental bone defects remain a major challenge in orthopedic surgery. The Masquelet's induced membrane technique (MIMT) is a two-stage reconstructive approach used for limb salvage in complex defects. This study evaluated radiographic healing and patient-reported outcomes after MIMT in a single tertiary center, including rare talus and metatarsal applications. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 patients (10 males, 4 females) treated with MIMT for post-traumatic or osteomyelitis-related lower-extremity bone defects (tibia, femur, talus, metatarsal) between 2010 and 2023. Mean

Knowledge-Driven Multiple Instance Learning With Hierarchical Cluster-Incorporated Aware Filtering for Larynx Pathological Grading.

Pathological grading of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) based on whole-slide image (WSI) is crucial for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. According to pathologists' knowledge, tumor regions are highly associated with grading. However, existing multiple instance learning (MIL) methods tend to overrepresent weakly relevant non-tumor regions and irrelevant background, leading to poor grading performance and interpretability. Motivated by the above problems, we propose an end-to-end knowledge-driven MIL network with hierarchical cluster-incorporated aware filtering, i.e. HCF-MIL. Fi

Contemporary outcomes after 100 consecutive HeartMate 3 LVAD implantations: a single-centre cohort study from a Swiss tertiary centre.

The extra ocular (eye) muscles are one of the principal tissues involved in the autoimmune-mediated inflammation of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). Several eye muscle proteins are targeted by autoantibodies or sensitized T lymphocytes, or both, and include: G2s, which is now identified as the terminal 141 amino acids of the winged-helix transcription factor FOXP1, the flavoprotein (Fp) subunit of the mitochondrial enzyme succinate dehydrogenase, the so-called "64kDa protein", a non-tissue specific membrane protein called 1D and the calcium binding protein calsequestrin. Of these, antibodies again

Spatial Transcriptomics Unveils Landscape of Resistance to Concurrent Chemo-Radiotherapy in Hypopharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The Role of SPP1+ Macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis, particularly in advanced stages. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is frequently employed to preserve the larynx, but resistance to CCRT remains a significant clinical challenge. Understanding the tumor microenvironment (TME) in CCRT-resistant cases is crucial for identifying predictive biomarkers and developing targeted therapies to improve outcomes. METHODS: This study analyzed tissue samples from patients with advanced hypopharyngeal SCC who were either resistant to CCRT or had not

Modeling Gut Barrier Dysfunction and Subsequent Opportunistic Infection by Candida albicans During Chemotherapy-Induced Intestinal Mucositis in Mice.

Chemotherapeutic agents exert antineoplastic effects by damaging the DNA of cancer cells, leading to cell death. However, this effect is not specific, and may affect healthy cells and cause several adverse events such as myelosuppression and gastrointestinal mucositis. The term gastrointestinal mucositis refers to lesions in the mucosa, which include the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, stomach, and intestine. The focus of this chapter will be the chemotherapy-induced intestinal damage, which can lead to weight loss, diarrhea, constipation, and increased predisposition to infections. Despite its

Medical Cannabis for Best Supportive Care of Patients Affected by Cancers of the Head and Neck: A Narrative Review.

Cancers of the head and neck, including malignancies of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and salivary glands, are often associated with severe symptoms that negatively impact quality of life. Patients commonly experience pain, nausea, cachexia (severe weight loss), dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), and xerostomia (dry mouth), all of which can be exacerbated by both the disease and its treatments, such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Research has demonstrated that medical cannabis can be effective in managing symptoms such as chronic pain, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety, making it a v

Investigation of the protective effect of melatonin against radiobiological damage in laryngeal tissue due to radiotherapy at different dose rates in rats.

BACKGROUND: In radiotherapy (RT), the dose given to the organs at risk (OAR) is as important as the dose received by the tumor. FF (Flattening Filtered) and FFF (Flattening Filter Free) treatment techniques used in RT offer different advantages in terms of their effects on target and critical organs. Treatment duration varies depending on the number of monitor units (MU) delivered per unit time. The aim of this study was to investigate biochemically and histopathologically the damage in healthy laryngeal tissue exposed to 600 MU/min FF and 2400 MU/min FF ionizing radiation under different frac

Multimodal treatment of radiation-associated laryngeal angiosarcoma: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Angiosarcoma is a rare, highly aggressive malignancy of vascular endothelial origin, marked by rapid local invasion and a high risk of distant spread. Radiation-associated disease is even rarer, and laryngeal involvement is scarcely reported. No standard therapy exists for locally advanced or metastatic cases, and clinical experience is limited. We report a case of radiation-associated laryngeal angiosarcoma and contextualize its diagnosis and management within the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient, a 31-year-old man, was admitted to the hospital, at January 24, 2022, due c

NOP2 Promotes Glycolysis and Tumor Development in Larynx Cancer by Stabilizing TPI1 mRNA Through N5-Methylcytosine Modification.

Larynx cancer, a malignant tumor originating from the epithelial cells of the larynx, remains a significant clinical challenge. Although both N5-methylcytosine (m5C) modification and glycolysis are critically implicated in cancer progression, their functional interplay in larynx cancer is not well defined. This study aims to elucidate the mechanism through which m5C modification influences larynx cancer progression via glycolysis. We performed bioinformatics analysis on the GSE59102 data set to identify m5C-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between larynx cancer and normal tissues.
