Effects of Dietary Glycine Supplementation on Reproductive Outcomes and Early Piglet Growth in Local Black Gilts: Associations with Placental Traits and Maternal Gut Microbiota-Metabolome Profiles.

Dietary glycine may influence reproductive outcomes, placental development, and early piglet growth in gilts. Sixty local black gilts were randomly assigned to a basal diet (CON), an isonitrogenous control supplemented with 1.19% L-alanine (ALA), or 1.0% glycine (GLY; n = 20 per group) from 30 d before mating. After pregnancy confirmation, 10 pregnant gilts per treatment were randomly selected according to the prespecified design for follow-up to farrowing. Pregnancy rate differed among treatments (p = 0.004) and was higher in GLY than in CON. Compared with both controls, GLY had greater live-

Utility of Microvascular-flow Imaging of Placenta in Normal and Fetal Growth Restricted Pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is one of the commonest complication associated with pregnancies. Fetal biometry and conventional color Doppler parameters such as resistivity index have been used to diagnose FGR in pregnancies since decades. However, such Doppler parameters are indirect evidences of FGR. Microvascular (MV) flow is a new and upcoming doppler flow imaging technique and can be used to assess placental microvasculature. Vascular index (VI) is a quantitative parameter which can be derived from MV flow imaging. This study aims to use VI as a parameter to differentiate bet

Echinacea and Ginger combination reduces inflammatory responses of preeclamptic placental cells.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe pregnancy-related condition characterized by high blood pressure and, in some cases, proteinuria and multiorgan dysfunction, with high risk of mother and newborn mortality. Women affected by PE often experience an exacerbated inflammatory response, with elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines detected both systemically and locally in the placenta. Echinacea angustifolia and Zingiber officinale are natural compounds with well-documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Due to their minimal adverse effects for mother and fetus, they are often used d

sFlt-1 in Decidua, Placenta, and Maternal Serum in Preeclampsia Subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Soluble FMS-like tyrosine kinase (sFlt-1) drives maternal symptoms in preeclampsia, serves as a predictive biomarker, and represents a promising therapeutic target. sFlt-1 is expressed in placental and decidual tissue, which together form the maternal-fetal interface. Whether placental and decidual expression of sFlt-1 regulates the maternal serum levels remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate sFlt-1 expression and co-regulation in decidua, placenta, and maternal serum, in normal pregnancies and preeclamptic pregnancies with and without fetal growth restriction. METHODS:

The maternal-placental-fetal liver axis: A mechanistic framework for understanding benzene developmental hematotoxicity.

Benzene is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant and a human hematotoxicant and carcinogen. Increasing epidemiological and experimental evidence links in utero benzene exposure to adverse pregnancy outcomes, altered fetal development, and increased childhood leukemia risk. Benzene toxicity is initiated through metabolism into reactive intermediates, primarily by cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) and myeloperoxidase. These enzymes are expressed not only in the maternal liver but also in the placenta and fetal liver, indicating that multiple compartments may contribute to benzene toxicity during pregn

FUBP1 lactylation suppresses trophoblast function in fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common complication of pregnancy; however, its exact molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Excessive lactate accumulation in the placenta is often observed during FGR. High concentrations of lactate can regulate the proliferation of pathological cells through lactylation of key proteins. Therefore, we aimed to screen key lactylation modification-related genes (LMRGs) and provide new directions for the diagnosis and treatment of FGR. METHODS: The Differentially expressed LMRGs (DE-LMRGs) in FGR were evaluated using the Gene Expression Omnibus data

First Transcriptomic Insights into the Invertebrate Placental Analogue: Differential Gene Expression in Gonozooids of Crisiella producta (Bryozoa, Cyclostomatida).

AbstractPlacentotrophy, the most complex mode of nutrient transfer from a parental organism to developing embryos, has evolved multiple times among Metazoa, being a well-known example of convergent evolution. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and physiology of placenta-like systems in invertebrates remain unknown. Phylum Bryozoa is an excellent model for studying the evolution of placentotrophy, since this reproductive strategy evolved repeatedly within this group. Cyclostome bryozoans are characterized by a unique syncytial/coenocytic placental analogue that nourish

Ellagic acid alleviates nicotine-induced placental injury in pregnant rats: Histomorphometric and molecular evidence.

Maternal nicotine exposure during pregnancy is associated with placental dysfunction, oxidative stress, and impaired fetal development. Ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound with potent antioxidant properties, may protect placental tissues against nicotine-induced damage. This study investigated the protective effects of EA on placental histomorphometric alterations, oxidative stress, and apoptosis-related gene expression in nicotine-exposed pregnant rats. Twenty-four pregnant Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 6): control, EA (60mg/kg), nicotine (1

Placental mitochondrial impairment in preeclampsia patients.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific hypertensive disorder characterized by new-onset hypertension after 20 weeks of gestation, accompanied by end-organ dysfunction with or without proteinuria. Affecting approximately 5-7% of pregnancies worldwide, it remains a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Despite decades of research, the underlying pathophysiology of preeclampsia remains incompletely understood. However, increasing evidence implicates placental mitochondrial oxidative stress in its pathogenesis. In this review, we summarize the current literature pertaining to

Associations of placental weight, placental weight-to-birthweight ratio, and in vivo markers of placental endocrine and metabolic function in humans.

PURPOSE: Placental weight and weight-to-birthweight ratio are widely used as indicators of placental function, yet their relationship with functional markers in humans remains unclear. This study explored the associations of placental weight and weight-to-birthweight ratio with indicators of placental endocrine function and metabolism and examined the associations between these indicators of placental endocrine function and metabolism. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we included 116 healthy women undergoing planned cesarean delivery at term. Placental weight and birthweight were recor

Matrix-Resolved Profiling of the Prenatal Chemical Exposome Reveals Selective Placental Retention and Fetal Transfer.

Chemical exposure during human development, especially in utero, can disrupt many biological processes and increase disease vulnerability. Assessing the chemical landscape across the maternal-fetal interface is challenging. Here we address this challenge by conducting an exposome-based analysis across a suite of integrated maternal-fetal biological compartments: maternal urine, maternal serum, placental tissue, and umbilical cord serum. Using wide-scope liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) in 23 mother-infant dyads from the INSULIN cohort (Spain), we profiled 659 c

Machine learning in placental research: a review and guide for future studies.

Machine learning approaches are increasingly applied across biomedical research to analyze complex, high-dimensional datasets and identify patterns that may inform disease diagnosis and biological discovery. In reproductive and placental research, these methods are used to investigate fetal development, pregnancy complications, and early-life health outcomes using molecular and clinical data. Machine learning approaches have widely been applied to placental and obstetric imaging, such as ultrasound, although these applications have been extensively reviewed elsewhere. Despite growing interest,

Classification of gestational diabetes mellitus placental histopathological images based on MONAI and improved GAMatrix-YOLOv8.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses a significant threat to maternal and fetal health, and placental pathology is crucial for assessing disease severity. Traditional diagnosis relies on clinicians' visual assessment, which is often inefficient and subjective. METHODS: To address these issues, we developed a MONAI-based image augmentation strategy and integrated the GAMatrix attention module within the YOLOv8 framework. Our study used a dataset of 5,065 placental pathology images (80% for training and 20% for validation) covering five pathology categories, supplemented by an

KSMFM factsheet on obstetric complications after myomectomy or adenomyomectomy: uterine rupture and placenta accreta spectrum.

Over the past 20 years, as the number of women of reproductive age in Korea diagnosed with uterine leiomyoma and adenomyosis prior to pregnancy has increased, fertility-preserving uterine surgeries such as myomectomy and adenomyomectomy have also increased. Although these surgeries can preserve fertility, they can cause serious obstetric complications, such as uterine rupture and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). The incidence of uterine rupture after myomectomy is reported to be 0.5-1.52%, whereas the incidence after adenomyomectomy is considerably higher, ranging from 3.2 to 12.5%. A key clin
