This paper examines the cultural meanings and ritual practices surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, and early infant care in Bikaner, and their implications for maternal and newborn wellbeing. We conducted a qualitative ethnographic study based on in-depth interviews and short-term observations of household rituals with 33 participants, including 13 pregnant women, 11 recently delivered mothers, and 9 elder female family members. The findings reveal that pregnancy is widely perceived as a vulnerable and transformative phase that necessitates heightened care, protection, and collective familial s

Placenta-related complications contribute substantially to maternal and perinatal mortality globally, with the greatest burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, the potential influence of inadequate household water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) on these outcomes remains poorly characterised. We investigated associations between household WASH conditions and selected placenta-related complications, including pre-eclampsia, small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and stillbirth, in The Gambia, Kenya and Mozambique. This secondary analysis was nested within PRECISE (PREgnancy Care In

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-specific liver disorder characterized by elevated maternal bile acid concentrations and an increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. Genetic susceptibility, hormonal changes, and impaired bile acid transport contribute to its development but do not fully explain the variability in disease severity and fetal outcomes. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota dysbiosis and altered bile acid metabolism are associated with ICP and may participate in disease development through the gut-liver-placenta axis. In this review, we int

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of birth defects; most critical (c)CHD newborns will develop neurodevelopmental disorders. Abnormal placental development may be involved, as genetics explains only 30% of sporadic CHD cases. Growing evidence suggests that placental dysfunction may result in heart and brain defects, as it shares a common early development. We hypothesized that newborns with critical CHD exhibit sex-specific alterations in placental mitochondrial biogenesis and function which may affect the fetal growth trajectory. Term placenta and paired umbilical cord (UC)

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is related to multiple negative pregnancy outcomes such as miscarriage, pre-eclampsia and so on. Cell senescence was considered potential mechanism of GDM. However, the role and mechanism of high glucose and cellular senescence in trophoblast cells are largely unknown. Here, we observed cell senescence and expression of glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) were up-regulated in GDM placenta. In vitro study confirmed the migration and invasion abilities were impaired in H2O2-induced senescent choriocarcinoma JEG3 cells. Additionally, high glucose triggered senescent

Global plastic production has potentially led to pervasive micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) exposure across environmental, agricultural, and biological systems, now detected in every human tissue examined, from blood and placenta to brain and cardiovascular plaque, raising potential public health concerns. Given their small size and physicochemical properties, MNPs can infiltrate soil and water, enter plants and animals, and transfer along food and water systems, potentially reaching human tissues. In preclinical models, ingested MNPs appear to persist in the gastrointestinal tract and alter micro

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic bacteria of the genus Leptospira and represents a major public health concern worldwide. Although its systemic manifestations are well documented, the consequences of leptospirosis for reproduction and pregnancy, particularly in humans, remain poorly understood. This narrative review summarizes the principal reproductive outcomes associated with leptospirosis and examines the mechanisms that may contribute to pregnancy complications. In livestock, leptospirosis is a well-established cause of reproductive failure, including abortion and i

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a predominant global pathogen responsible for severe lower respiratory tract infections and hospitalizations in infants, especially those aged under six months. To date, no vaccines have been approved for active immunization against RSV in infant populations, leaving monoclonal antibodies as the primary modality for immediate, direct RSV protection. Maternal vaccination during pregnancy has evolved as a critical passive immunization approach, wherein vaccine-elicited maternal antibodies cross the placenta to confer early-life protection on neonates and youn

BACKGROUND: Although adverse maternal and infant outcomes have been reported following Oropouche virus infection, the frequencies of these outcomes have not been compared with those in uninfected pregnancies. We followed up pregnant women from areas with Oropouche virus transmission in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, to evaluate potential adverse maternal and infant outcomes following Oropouche virus exposure.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study across the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we included pregnant women receiving prenatal care in municipalities with or at high risk of Oropouch

One of the most prevalent metabolic disorders affecting dairy cows during the periparturient period is hypocalcemia, which is increasingly viewed as a complex immunometabolic disease rather than a simple calcium deficiency. Recent evidence shows that complex interactions between endocrine regulation, immune dysfunction, oxidative stress, and metabolic adaptations play a role in the development of both clinical and subclinical hypocalcemia. Prevalence rates for clinical hypocalcemia range from approximately 3-10% and for subclinical forms up to 50% or more in multiparous dairy cows, thereby und

BACKGROUND: Maternal anti-Kell and anti-Rhesus D-alloimmunization cause severe hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDF) by crossing the placenta, leading to anemia and hydrops fetalis. Early-onset HDF from anti-K and anti-RhD alloimmunization often requires multiple, early intrauterine transfusions (IUTs), with higher complication rates and decreased sensitivity after the first intervention. Mortality remains high.
CASE REPORT: We report the successful treatment of three pregnant women with high-titer red cell alloantibodies-two with anti-K and one with anti-RhD-during the first trime

BACKGROUND: Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) disorders are associated with substantial maternal morbidity, and distinguishing mild from severe forms prenatally remains difficult. Inflammatory indices derived from peripheral blood counts have emerged as promising biomarkers, yet their role in grading PAS severity has been insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to assess the discriminative value of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and other inflammatory indices for differentiating severe from mild PAS within an already diagnosed PAS

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in the environment represents an emerging risk to human health, with growing evidence of detection in human biological matrices. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the detection, quantification, and characterization of MPs in human biological matrices. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Original research articles published in English up to 2025 that involved human participants were included, specifically selecting observational studies. The 40 included studies confirmed MPs in multiple human biologi

Galectins represent a family of proteins which are capable of specifically binding to beta-galactoside-containing sugar molecules, known as glycans. Galectins possess carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs) that fundamentally determine their ability to bind to sugars. Galectin-14 (Gal-14) and galectin-16 (Gal-16) are members of the galectin family that is particularly associated with the placenta. The galectins in the placenta constitute a specialized subgroup functioning at the maternal-fetal interface. They are expressed primarily in the syncytiotrophoblasts. This trophoblast layer is in dir

Polyurethane (PU) is one of the most widely used synthetic polymers, yet polyurethane-derived microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) have received less attention than particles derived from polyethylene, polypropylene, or polystyrene. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the sources, environmental release, aging, human exposure pathways, biomonitoring findings, biological effects, and research gaps associated with PU-derived MNPs. The review synthesized 200 sources from database searches without publication-date restrictions and supplementary contextual literature, integrating e

This study investigates associations between genetically proxied plasma vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family proteins and placenta previa using 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Exposure GWAS summary statistics were obtained from the UK Biobank and IEU resources, and placenta previa data from FinnGen. Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) analysis was the primary method, supplemented by MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode analyses. The Bonferroni-corrected threshold for 5 exposures was P < .01. Cochran Q, the MR-Egger intercept, MR-PRESSO and leave-one-out analyses assessed

Background: Obstetric hysterectomy remains a life-saving intervention for placenta accreta spectrum and uncontrolled obstetric hemorrhage. Evidence regarding the outcomes of planned versus urgent obstetric hysterectomy in contemporary tertiary practice in Greece remains limited. We compared maternal and neonatal outcomes between elective and urgent procedures at a tertiary referral center in Thessaloniki. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 30 women who underwent obstetric hysterectomy between January 2020 and June 2025. The elective group included women with prenatal PAS diagnosis and planne

Influenza in pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of severe respiratory disease and adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, particularly later in gestation. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on epidemiology, pathophysiology, placental and fetal consequences, clinical presentation, diagnosis, antiviral management, and vaccination. Pregnancy involves dynamic immune adaptation together with reduced respiratory reserve, increased oxygen consumption, and cardiovascular changes that may amplify the effects of influenza pneumonia. Placental and fetal consequences appear to be mediated
