Nitric oxide (NO) modulates many behavioral and neuroendocrine responses. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of the synthetic enzyme that produces NO in neurons evokes elevated and sustained aggression in male mice. Recently, the excessive aggressive and impulsive traits of neuronal NO synthase knockout (nNOS-/-) mice were shown to be caused by reductions in serotonin (5-HT) turnover and deficient 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptor function in brain regions regulating emotion. The consistently high levels of aggression observed in nNOS-/- mice could be reversed by 5-HT precursors and by treatment w

Nitric oxide (NO) is implicated in inflammation and hypothalamic-pituitary responses to immune stimuli; however, the specific role of NO from neurons during stress-induced immune responses remains unspecified. We measured antigen-specific delayed-type-hypersensitivity (DTH) responses in the skin of wild-type (WT) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase knockout (nNOS(-/-)) mice at baseline and after 2 h of restraint. Baseline corticosterone concentrations were higher in nNOS(-/-) than WT mice. However, stress-induced increases in corticosterone were dampened in nNOS(-/-) mice, and restraint suppres

Malaria is the world's most important parasitic disease, accounting for an estimated 300 to 500 million new cases and between 1.5 and 2.7 deaths annually. The majority of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa where malaria is endemic and are the result of infection with Plasmodium falciparum. The number of deaths in the United States due to malaria is comparably much lower and involves so-called "imported" cases in which U.S. travelers acquire the infection upon travel to endemic areas and subsequently return to the United States or in which infected foreign citizens travel to the United St

In contrast to most other sensory systems, hardly anything is known about the neuroanatomical development of central projections of primary vestibular neurons and how their second order target neurons develop. Recent data suggest that afferent projections may develop not unlike other sensory systems, forming first the overall projection by molecular means followed by an as yet unspecified phase of activity mediated refinement. The latter aspect has not been tested critically and most molecules that guide the initial projection are unknown. The molecular and topological origin of the vestibular

A 17-year-old woman with intractable seizures since infancy underwent resection of an epileptic focus in the left frontal cortex. The cytoplasm of many cortical astrocytes contained amorphous eosinophilic inclusions, which ultrastructurally were non-membrane bound and consisted of densely packed osmiophilic material. Similar inclusions have previously been observed, at autopsy, in patients with unspecified mental retardation and various brain malformations. The present report is unique in that the inclusions were detected in the resected specimen of an epileptic focus. The patient is neurologi

Moderate support was obtained in a sample of 101 gay, bisexual, and heterosexual males for the perinatal hormone theory, which hypothesizes that attenuated levels of androgens during critical periods of male fetal development fail to masculinize and defeminize the brain. Affected individuals develop female-typical sexual orientation (assessed here by a pie chart) and cerebral organization, reflected in visual-spatial abilities and gender nonconformity. Handedness, also thought to reflect in utero hormone exposure, was evaluated. Gay and bisexual males reported greater femininity and lesser mas

A localized cluster of neurons in macaque posterior parietal cortex, termed the parietal reach region (PRR), is activated when a reach is planned to a visible or remembered target. To explore the role of PRR in sensorimotor transformations, we tested whether cells would be activated when a reach is planned to an as-yet unspecified goal. Over one-third of PRR cells increased their firing after an instruction to prepare a reach, but not after an instruction to prepare a saccade, when the target of the movement remained unknown. A partially overlapping population (two-thirds of cells) was activat

Patterns of aberrant language due to lateralized frontal brain lesions have been described. The present study investigated the consequences of lateralized lesion for aspects of semantic range and relevance in speech of patients with frontotemporal degeneration. Demented patients with predominantly left (n=10) and right (n=4) brain degeneration as well as 5 healthy controls participated. Significant differences were found concerning semantic range and relevance in descriptions of emotionally loaded pictures within the demented group and between the demented group and the controls. The demented

The neurons of the cerebral cortex originate in the proliferative neuroepithelium and settle in the cortical plate during embryonic development. Interposed between these two sites is a large transitional field. We have earlier demonstrated experimentally in rats with 3H-thymidine autoradiography that this transitional field is a stratified structure composed of discrete layers of migrating and sojourning cells, and fiber bands. Here we show that the different layers of the stratified transitional field are identifiable without experimental procedures in the developing human cerebral cortex and

This short report provides data and statistics of cancer mortality in Italy in 1998, updating previous work on the issue. The material and methods of this report are similar to those previously described. Briefly, cancer death certification numbers by cause and estimates of the resident population in 1998, stratified by sex and quinquennia of age, were abstracted from data provided by the Istituto Nazionale di Statistica (ISTAT). All cancers or groups of cancers, classified according to the standard International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Ninth Revision, were grouped in 31 categories,

The majority of primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) are of B cell origin, and those of T cell origin are a distinct rarity. Furthermore, spinal cord involvement of T cell PCNSL is extremely rare and only a small number of cases have been reported. The authors report a case of multifocal T cell PCNSL mainly involving the intramedullary (IM) portion ofthe spinal cord in a 57-year-old woman. Neurological examination showed right leg weakness and hypesthesia below the T10 level. Magnetic resonance images revealed multiple well enhancing masses in the IM portion ofthe cervical and thor

The relationship between stressful life events and the onset of disease is well documented. However, the role of psychological stress as a risk factor for life-threatening cerebrovascular insults such as stroke remains unspecified, but could explain individual variation in stroke outcome. To discover the mechanisms through which psychological stress may alter stroke outcome, we modeled the effects of chronic social intimidation and stress on ischemia-induced bcl-2 expression and early neuronal cell loss resulting from cerebral artery occlusion in mice (C57BL/6). The bcl-2 protooncogene promote

During prenatal development, the central nervous system is transformed from a thin layer of unspecified tissue into a complex system that can process information and organize actions. There are 8 general mechanisms that permit this transformation: neural induction, neurulation, proliferation, migration, axonal outgrowth, synaptogenesis, differentiation, and apoptosis. These processes as well as the anatomical changes they cause are described. Future research with humans, such as in utero MRI as well as behavioral and electrophysiological testing of infants following specific prenatal perturbat

We evaluated mortality among subjects employed in an oil refinery plant in Rome, Italy. We studied two subgroups of refinery employees: blue collar and white collar workers. A total of 682 men (505 blue collars, 148 white collars, 29 unknown) employed between 1965 and 1992, were followed up for mortality since employment in the plant to July 1999. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR), and their 90% Confidence Intervals (90% CI), comparing mortality rates of the cohort members with those of the general population of the Lazio region. For blue collar workers, we performed analyses by latency sinc

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association of hormone therapy (HRT) with hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke among postmenopausal women with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes are common complications of AMI, and women are at increased risk for hemorrhagic stroke after thrombolytic therapy. This risk may be related to female hormones.
METHODS: Using data from the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction-3, we studied 114,724 women age 55 years or older admitted to the hospital for AMI, of whom 7,353 reported HRT use on admission. We determined rates of

BACKGROUND: Dementia is an age-related condition in which Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebrovascular disease account for the bulk of cases. The role played by calcium in regulating brain functions is well known - the calcium ion links membrane excitation to subsequent intracellular enzymatic response. Change in calcium homeostasis is one important effect of aging with repercussions on higher cortical functions. Nimodipine is an isopropyl calcium channel blocker which can easily cross the blood brain barrier. Its primary action is to reduce the number of open channels, thus restricting influx

Following a clock- or phase-shift of the light dark cycle, hippocampal lesioned pigeons (Columba livia) consistently display a larger deviation in vanishing bearings away from the homeward direction compared to intact birds; an effect never seen in unshifted birds. In Experiment 1, control and hippocampal lesioned pigeons oriented similarly after being held 1 week under artificial lighting in the absence of a phase-shift. Housing under artificial light by itself does not result in between group orientation differences. In Experiment 2, control and hippocampal lesioned pigeons oriented equally

This Commentary compares the connections of the dopaminergic system with the striatum in rats and primates with respect to two levels of striatal organization: a tripartite functional (motor, associative and limbic) subdivision and a compartmental (patch/striosome-matrix) subdivision. The topography of other basal ganglia projections to the dopaminergic system with respect to their tripartite functional subdivision is also reviewed. This examination indicates that, in rats and primates, the following observations can be made. (1) The limbic striatum reciprocates its dopaminergic input and in a

The hippocampus is widely believed to be essential for learning about the context in which conditioning occurs. This view is based primarily on evidence that lesions of the dorsal hippocampus disrupt freezing to contextual cues after fear conditioning. However, lesions that disrupt freezing produce no effect on fear-potentiated startle, a second measure of contextual fear. Moreover, hippocampal lesions also do not disrupt the contextual 'blocking' phenomenon, which provides an indirect measure of contextual fear. In these paradigms, at least, it appears that hippocampal lesions disrupt the exp

This study examined the spatial strategies used by goldfish (Carassius auratus) to find a goal in a 4-arm maze and the involvement of the telencephalon in this spatial learning. Intact and telencephalon-ablated goldfish were trained to find food in an arm placed in a constant room location and signaled by a local visual cue (mixed place-cue procedure). Both groups learned the task, but they used different learning strategies. Telencephalon-ablated goldfish learned the task more quickly and made fewer errors to criterion than controls. Probe trials revealed that intact goldfish could use either
