Fatigue in head and neck cancer survivors after radiotherapy - prevalence, risk factors, and radiation dose correlates.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of fatigue in head and neck cancer survivors and identify associated factors, including potential associations with radiation dose to cerebral organs at risk (OAR). METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study included survivors treated with curative radiotherapy between 2005 and 2023 at a tertiary cancer center. Fatigue and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were assessed with the EORTC QLQ-C30. Dosimetric analyses evaluated associations between fatigue and radiation dose to intracranial OAR (brainstem, cerebellum, posterior fossa, medulla, pitui

Unilateral mixed corticomedullary tumor of the adrenal gland with a synchronous contralateral pheochromocytoma: A case report and literature review.

A 37-year-old man had two years of fatigue, weakness, and mood changes, initially misdiagnosed as depression. Workup showed hypertension, elevated urinary normetanephrine, elevated free cortisol, and suppressed ACTH. Imaging revealed bilateral adrenal masses (7.5 cm left, 4.7 cm right) with left adrenal vein thrombosis; MIBG scintigraphy showed bilateral uptake. After alpha-blockade, he underwent bilateral adrenalectomy. Inhibin positivity in the left mass's cortical region suggested a possible first-reported unilateral mixed corticomedullary tumor with synchronous contralateral pheochromocyto

Adrenal Collision Tumors: A Practical Application of the Existing Evidence.

Adrenal collision tumors (ACTs) are rare lesions in which two histologically distinct tumors coexist within the same adrenal gland. They are almost always incidental findings, and although their heterogeneous, dual-component appearance can raise concern for malignancy, they seldom represent a distinct clinical problem. The principal pitfall they create is radiologic rather than biochemical: the mixed composition of an ACT renders the adrenal CT washout protocol unreliable and can mimic a neoplasm. The established adrenal incidentaloma pathway (biochemical exclusion of pheochromocytoma and adre

Retroauricular approach for carotid body tumor resection: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid body tumors (CBTs) are rare and highly vascular paragangliomas arising at the carotid bifurcation. Surgical resection remains the standard treatment for CBTs. However, the conventional transcervical approach inevitably leaves a visible cervical scar, which may negatively affect quality of life in patients with cosmetic concerns. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging right neck mass over a 6-month period. Ultrasonography demonstrated a hypervascular lesion surrounding the carotid arteries, and fine-needle aspiration was avoided be

Carotid Body Detection Rate and Size on Photon-Counting Versus Energy-Integrating Detector CT.

PURPOSE: To compare the carotid body (CB) detection rate and size measured on photon-counting CT (PCCT) versus energy-integrating detector CT (EIDCT), and to evaluate the effects of laterality and contrast phase. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a single institution on 48 adult patients who underwent head and neck CTA on both PCCT and EIDCT on arterial and venous phase imaging. CB detection was analyzed as a binary outcome using a mixed-effects logistic regression model with modality, phase, side, and modality-by-phase interaction as fixed effects, and patient as a random ef

Altitude-induced plasticity of respiratory central-peripheral chemoreflex interaction.

Stable breathing depends on the integrated action of central and peripheral chemoreceptors, but the nature of this interaction in humans and its physiological importance remain controversial. Previous studies reported additive, hypo-additive and hyper-additive responses across species, preparations and protocols. Here, we used a novel method to quantify peripheral chemoreflex sensitivity across graded levels of central chemoreceptor activation to test whether central-peripheral chemoreceptor interaction in awake humans is fixed or state dependent. At low altitude, the form of interaction varie

Impact of a silver filter with deep learning reconstruction on non-contrast MDCT of adrenal glands in terms of image quality, density values and radiation dose.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether the use of a silver beam filtration with deep learning reconstruction (DLR) impact the normal adrenal gland on unenhanced MDCT in terms of density, image quality and radiation dose. METHODS: This unicentric retrospective study evaluated two unenhanced MDCT acquisitions of 123 patients performed with a conventional filtration (Group A) and with a silver filtration (Group B) on a 320-detector row CT scanner with DLR. A total of 246 series, corresponding to 492 adrenal glands, were analyzed. We recorded the HU values of the normal adrenal gland, subcutaneous fa

Thyroid ultrasonography versus scintigraphy for establishing a stepwise imaging approach in pediatric patients with thyroid dysgenesis in resource-limited settings.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid scintigraphy and ultrasonography are the two primary imaging modalities widely used for thyroid visualization in pediatric patients with congenital hypothyroidism (CH). These modalities provide complementary information. In resource-limited settings, adopting a stepwise approach for selecting the initial imaging modality is essential. AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare the diagnostic performance of thyroid ultrasonography, thyroid scintigraphy, and combined modalities in categorizing the type of thyroid dysgenesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 56

Late-onset hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction in a childhood cancer survivor treated with cranial irradiation.

Hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction is a well-recognized late complication in childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) treated with cranial irradiation. We report a 42-year-old male with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosed at 5 years of age and treated with chemotherapy and 26 Gray whole-brain irradiation. He presented with right upper extremity paresis due to bilateral chronic subdural hematomas. Following burr-hole drainage for the left chronic subdural hematoma, he developed anorexia, fatigue, and hyponatremia and was referred to the endocrinology department. Endocrine evaluation de

Growth hormone-releasing hormone-secreting giant pheochromocytoma causing acromegaly: a case report with a review of the literature.

The ectopic secretion of growth hormone (GH) or growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) is responsible for fewer than 1% of acromegaly cases. Furthermore, within this small population, GHRH-secreting pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas (PPGLs) are even rarer. A 57-year-old Japanese woman presented to our hospital for treatment of a large left-sided pheochromocytoma (PCC). A physical examination revealed enlargement of the nose and lips as well as macroglossia, thereby raising the suspicion of acromegaly, which was biochemically confirmed by a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Magnetic resonance i

Complete molecular response of left adrenal metastasis from pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor following stereotactic body radiation therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: While pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) often metastasize to the liver, adrenal gland involvement is uncommon. Management of adrenal metastases with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is not common and outcomes are not well described. We report a case of metastatic PNET to the adrenal gland demonstrating sustained complete molecular response without anatomic resolution following SBRT within a multimodal treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old male patient was diagnosed in September 2023 with a well-differentiated grade 1 PNET. Initial imaging revealed an 8.9 cm c

Use of plasma chromogranin a epitopes vasostatin and catestatin as biomarkers for catecholamine-producing tumours in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of catecholamine-producing tumours from other adrenal tumours remains difficult. Chromogranin A (CgA) is a marker for catecholamine secretion in the body. An assay for quantification of the CgA epitopes vasostatin and catestatin has been validated for use in dogs but not yet evaluated in dogs with catecholamine-producing tumours. The aims were to evaluate the assays foranalysis of plasma concentrations of the CgA epitopes vasostatin and catestatin in dogs with adrenal tumours and to compare concentrations between catecholamine-producing tumours and adrenocortical tu

Androgen driven organoids for the male urogenital system.

Androgen signalling plays a central role in the development and function of the male urogenital system, including the adrenal gland, prostate, and testis. Disruption of the androgen axis underlies diseases ranging from infertility to castration-resistant prostate cancer, yet current models fail to fully display its multi-organ and hormone-driven complexity. Organoid systems provide a promising platform to model androgen-responsive tissues while preserving three-dimensional structure and cellular heterogeneity, with the ability for long-term culture and cryopreservation. Recent advances have en

Diagnostic challenges of masked arginine vasopressin deficiency in neurosarcoidosis complicated by sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor use.

A wide variety of endocrine disorders caused by sarcoidosis have been reported to date. We report the case of an 82-year-old male patient who presented with hypercalcemia and anterior pituitary hormone deficiency at the time of his sarcoidosis diagnosis and was subsequently diagnosed with arginine vasopressin deficiency (AVP-D) 6 months after the initiation of glucocorticoid therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enlarged pituitary gland, thickened pituitary stalk, and loss of the posterior pituitary bright spot, raising the suspicion of hypothalamic-pituitary sarcoidosis. Despite imp

[Adrenal ganglioneuroma as an incidentaloma in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome].

Ganglioneuroma is a benign, non-functional tumor, most of which are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally through imaging studies or at autopsy. We present the case of a 47-year-old woman with Sjögren's syndrome. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed an ovoid tumor with well-defined borders, measuring 11 x 8 cm, located in the left adrenal gland. Robotassisted adrenalectomy was performed, and microscopic examination revealed a mature ganglioneuroma. Although imaging studies such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are effective in the diagnostic approach to adrena
