BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of thyroid ultrasound is gaining in popularity at postgraduate level. However, it has not been broadly incorporated into the UK undergraduate medical curriculum. Thyroid ultrasound can help augment students understanding of both anatomy and endocrinology. We aimed to embed a hands-on thyroid ultrasound practical teaching session as part of the QUB (Queen's University Belfast) 3rd year medical students' endocrine and diabetes rotation. Students completed a questionnaire on the effectiveness of the teaching.
METHODS: Fifty 3rd year medical students completed a quest

Glycoprotein hormone receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors essential for endocrine signaling. Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR), originally expressed in the thyroid gland, has been increasingly detected in various normal and malignant tissues, suggesting a wide range of functions. We hypothesized that extrathyroidal TSHR contributes to tumor development and activation via local stimulators such as thyrostimulin and its subunits. In the present study, TSHR expression was characterized in breast (T47D, MCF7), pancreatic (PL45, BXPC3), and colon (HCT116) cancer cell lines using quan

INTRODUCTION: Nondiagnostic results after thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) are common and may delay diagnosis.
PURPOSE: To identify demographic and sonographic predictors of nondiagnostic cytology at repeat thyroid FNA and to report malignancy rates in this group.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single-center retrospective cohort including consecutive adult patients who underwent repeat ultrasound-guided FNA of thyroid nodules with prior nondiagnostic cytology (Bethesda I) between 2015 and 2023. Nodule-level ultrasound features were extracted from structured reports. The primary outcome was nondi

Sellar and parasellar vascular lesions are rare causes of pituitary dysfunction and may mimic pituitary adenomas or other sellar masses. Cavernous internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms can cause hypopituitarism through compression of the pituitary gland or stalk, but diagnosis may be delayed when symptoms are initially attributed to a more common endocrine disorder. We report a 37-year-old man who presented with six weeks of unintentional weight loss, fatigue, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, anxiety, tremor, and tachycardia. Initial evaluation showed suppressed thyroid-stimulating horm

Lysosomal storage diseases are inherited multisystem disorders caused by defects in lysosomal enzymes, transporters, or associated proteins, leading to intracellular substrate accumulation and progressive organ dysfunction. The thyroid gland may be particularly vulnerable because hormone release depends on thyroglobulin endocytosis, endosomal trafficking, lysosomal proteolysis, iodide recycling, and cellular proteostasis. This review summarizes current evidence on thyroid involvement in lysosomal storage diseases, with emphasis on clinical manifestations, pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnos

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are widely used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, but their associations with thyroid disorders remain uncertain. We evaluated whether initiating a GLP-1 RA, compared with initiating a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP-4i), was associated with newly recorded autoimmune thyroiditis and other thyroid outcomes.
METHODS: This new-user, active-comparator cohort study emulated a target trial using the TriNetX Collaborative Network. Adults with type 2 diabetes who initiated a GLP-1 RA or DPP-4i between January 1, 2018, and Decemb

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid scintigraphy and ultrasonography are the two primary imaging modalities widely used for thyroid visualization in pediatric patients with congenital hypothyroidism (CH). These modalities provide complementary information. In resource-limited settings, adopting a stepwise approach for selecting the initial imaging modality is essential.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare the diagnostic performance of thyroid ultrasonography, thyroid scintigraphy, and combined modalities in categorizing the type of thyroid dysgenesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 56

OBJECTIVE: Subacute granulomatous thyroiditis is a self-limited inflammatory disorder and the most common cause of painful thyroid disease. Surgically treated cases offer a unique opportunity to explore its histopathological spectrum and co-occurring thyroid pathologies.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 44 thyroidectomy specimens diagnosed with subacute granulomatous thyroiditis between 2009 and 2019, evaluating clinical data and detailed histopathological features including inflammation extent and associated thyroid lesions.
RESULTS: The cohort comprised 36 females and 8 males (mean age

RATIONALE: Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is not extremely rare, but it may be overlooked in clinical practice because of its frequently asymptomatic presentation, lack of urgency for diagnosis, and limitations in diagnostic techniques. We report a case of ETT within the carotid sheath and emphasize its distinct blood supply and accompanying lymphoid tissue, which may improve our understanding of the relationship among the ETT, associated blood supply, and lymphoid tissue from an embryological perspective.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 42-year-old male was found to have an asymptomatic mass on the right

Pseudopus apodus is an anguimorph lizard belonging to the order Squamata. Anatomical information on this species remains limited, particularly regarding soft tissues, and has primarily focused on the axial skeleton of both living and fossil specimens. Recently, the anatomy of its coelomic cavity has been described using dissection and multi-detector computed tomography (CT), and its brain has been characterized neuroanatomically by combining ultra-high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with histological analysis using immunofluorescence. In the present study, four specimens (one fema

Withaferin A (WA), a bioactive steroidal lactone derived from Withania somnifera, has been reported to exhibit diverse pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory and metabolic regulatory effects. Although previous studies suggest a potential link between WA and thyroid-related molecular pathways, the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects remain incompletely understood. Here, we employed a comprehensive computational approach to explore WA-responsive molecular changes potentially relevant to thyroid-associated processes. RNA-sequencing data from WA-treated MCF-10A human mam

INTRODUCTION: Thyroidectomy involves the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, commonly performed for goiters, hyperthyroidism, or carcinomas, with 450,000-500,000 procedures performed annually in the United States. General anesthesia is traditionally used, providing optimal surgical conditions but associated with risks such as cardiovascular complications and longer hospital stays. Local anesthesia is gaining interest for high-risk patients, offering potentially similar outcomes to general anesthesia, while reducing postoperative complications and costs. The choice of anesthetic techni

BACKGROUND: The thyroid gland lies adjacent to the supraclavicular target and is highly radiosensitive, placing patients at risk for radiation-induced hypothyroidism (RIHT). While RIHT incidence and predictive models have been well described after photon-based irradiation, evidence in the proton therapy setting remains limited.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of RIHT in breast cancer patients undergoing proton-based supraclavicular nodal irradiation and to develop proton-specific normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models incorporating dose-volume, dose-averaged linear energy tra

BACKGROUND: Multiple gland disease associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) are relatively rare, and those combined with underlying thyroid diseases are even rarer. This study aimed to investigate the approaches to preoperative localization and enumeration of lesions, as well as the determination of surgical endpoints in such patients.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A female patient was admitted due to "elevated serum calcium detected for more than 20 days", with a past medical history of hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Neck ultrasound only suggested a single-gland lesion, and 99mTc
