Impact of blunt adrenal gland injury (BAGI) in major trauma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Blunt adrenal gland injuries (BAGI) are rare and typically reflect high-energy trauma. Despite suggestions that BAGI may be a marker of increased injury severity and mortality, evidence remains conflicting. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the impact of BAGI on trauma severity, in-hospital mortality, and hospital length of stay (LOS). METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Embase was performed up to August 31, 2024. Studies comparing adult blunt trauma patients with and without BAGI were included. Data on Injury Severity Score (ISS), in-hos

Rectal melanoma: managing a rare cause of rectal bleeding: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal melanoma is rare and has a poor prognosis. Symptoms are often non-specific, such as bloody diarrhea, anal pain or bowel habit changes. Diagnosis requires tissue sample with immunohistochemistry because of the difficulty of clinical differentiation from other tumor entities since many lesions are amelanotic. Many patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, precluding surgical treatment. Owing to the rareness of the disease and the lack of data there are no clear treatment guidelines available. A 90-year-old female sought emergency care due to rectal bleeding and changes i

Ganglioneuroma has a potential for lymph node metastasis, not impacting recurrence.

Ganglioneuromas are rare, benign tumors arising from neuroblastic cells in the autonomic sympathetic nervous system. While generally considered indolent, limited case reports suggest their potential for regional metastasis. This retrospective study analyzed the clinical, demographic, and pathological features of 25 adult patients diagnosed with ganglioneuroma at Bursa Uludag University, Faculty of Medicine, between April 2007 and November 2023. The cohort comprised 18 females (72%) and seven males (28%), with a median age of 42 years (range: 19-79). Tumors were most commonly located in the abd

Development of an experimental model for vascularized adrenal gland transplantation in rats.

AIM: The adrenal gland is a vital endocrine organ responsible for maintaining physiological homeostasis. Bilateral adrenalectomy results in adrenal insufficiency, requiring lifelong hormone replacement therapy. This study aimed to establish a reproducible experimental model for vascularized adrenal gland transplantation in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty male Wistar Albino rats (180-220 g) were randomly assigned into two equal groups (n = 10 each): control and transplantation. The control group underwent bilateral total adrenalectomy. In the transplantation group, vascularized adrenal gra

ClC-2 Contributes to Hypotonicity-Induced Adrenal Aldosterone Secretion.

AIM: The zona glomerulosa (ZG) of the adrenal cortex regulates blood pressure and electrolyte homeostasis through aldosterone production. In ZG cells, potassium and angiotensin II (Ang II) trigger calcium oscillations that drive aldosterone synthesis. Changes in serum osmolality also modulate aldosterone production in a chloride-dependent fashion, but the involved proteins remain unclear. Because the chloride channel ClC-2 is activated by hypoosmolality, we investigated its role in ZG osmoregulation. METHODS: We used Clcn2 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice. Explanted adrenal glands were i

Case Report: Complete remission in a neonate with high-risk neuroblastoma harboring MYCN amplification and 1p deletion: a case for aggressive early intervention, and literature review.

Neuroblastoma is the most prevalent extracranial solid tumor in infancy and early childhood, accounting for 8%-10% of all pediatric malignancies and contributing significantly to cancer-related mortality. Its clinical spectrum ranges from spontaneous regression to aggressive metastatic disease, often influenced by underlying genetic aberrations such as MYCN amplification and chromosomal deletions (1p, 11q, and 17q). We present a rare case of a full-term male neonate diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma originating from the left adrenal gland, exhibiting both MYCN amplification and 1p deletion.

Effects of repeated administration of oxandrolone in female wistar rats undergoing strength training.

Anabolic androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone that mimic its actions in various tissues. Due to its strong anabolic activity, weak androgenic effects, and resistance to hepatic metabolism, oxandrolone is one of the most commonly used anabolic steroids among female athletes. This study aimed to evaluate the anabolic effects of oxandrolone and its toxicological profile in female rats subjected to a strength training protocol. A total of 24 female Wistar rats (60 days old) were randomly assigned to receive oxandrolone (1.77 mg/kg/day) or its vehicle (corn oil) (n = 12 per

Endotoxin-induced inflammation promotes, via the adrenomedullary system, a hyperglycemic and anti-inflammatory reflex.

Immune challenges elicit significant physiological responses which are coordinated by the central nervous system. Among these is the sympathetic system-mediated anti-inflammatory reflex, which suppresses the TNF response. The sympathetic system has two main effector pathways: direct organ-targeted noradrenergic innervation and hormonal secretion from the adrenal gland. Experiments supporting the sympathetic nature of the anti-inflammatory reflex are based on observations that both β-blockers and splanchnic nerve transection increase the TNF response, yet these not only interfere with direct no

Primary Bilateral Macronodular Adrenocortical Disease With Concomitant Cushing Syndrome and Primary Aldosteronism Harboring Distinct ARMC5 Mutations in Individual Nodules.

Primary bilateral macronodular adrenocortical disease is an uncommon adrenal disorder characterized by bilateral adrenal enlargement with multiple nodules and autonomous steroid hormone production. Although genetic alterations involving ARMC5 have been implicated in its development, individual nodules within the same adrenal gland often show considerable variability in size, morphology, and hormonal activity, and detailed genetic evaluation of each nodule has rarely been performed. We report the case of a 58-year-old man with a long-standing history of hypertension who was found to have bilate

Rare primary pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma of the thyroid gland with lung and adrenal metastases: a case report and literature review.

Primary thyroid pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma (PRMS) is an extremely rare and aggressive neoplasm, with only five cases reported in the literature to date. We present the sixth reported case of primary thyroid PRMS and the first case demonstrating distal metastases to the lungs and left adrenal gland in a 71-year-old female. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy with lymphadenectomy, with histopathological evaluation confirming PRMS and demonstrating a highly aggressive biological behavior. The immunophenotypic profile showed strong immunopositivity for skeletal muscle markers, including de

Potential Therapeutic Synergy of High-Dose Vitamin C and Nicotinamide as Adjunctive Therapy in an Elderly Patient With Extensive-Stage Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 78-year-old male with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) involving the brain, bone, and adrenal gland at diagnosis, who exhibited a near-complete thoracic radiologic response following platinum-etoposide-atezolizumab therapy with consolidative thoracic and whole-brain radiotherapy. In addition to standard chemoimmunotherapy, the patient self-administered high-dose oral vitamin C (3g/day) and nicotinamide (3g/day) continuously throughout treatment, raising the possibility that metabolic adjunctive therapy may have contributed to the depth of response. Long-term persistent hypertension following surgical resection of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma.

BACKGROUND: Non-metastatic pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are considered a curable cause of secondary hypertension. However, some studies identified that a considerable ratio of patients (10.0-43.8%) still experience persistent hypertension even after successful resection of PPGLs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 472 PPGL patients who underwent surgical resection at three centers from January 1, 2012, to October 31, 2022. Comprehensive clinical data were recorded. Binary unconditional logistic analysis was conducted to identify the independent variables associa

Bilateral Adrenal Metastases From Breast Cancer 14 Years After Remission: Diagnostic Value of "Adrenal Thickening".

"Adrenal thickening," a radiologic enlargement of the adrenal gland, with no discrete mass, often benign and nonfunctional, may represent early radiologic sign of malignancy. We present a 64-year-old woman with a history of left lobular breast adenocarcinoma treated with left mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and 4 years of adjuvant hormonal therapy. She remained in remission for 14 years when a new, incidental finding of left adrenal thickening was noted on contrast computed tomography (CT). The patient was asymptomatic, without signs of adrenal hormonal excess. Follow-up imaging revealed

Case Report: ALK-positive histiocytosis presenting as an adrenal mass: a diagnostic trap due to unusual morphology.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of an adrenal mass is critical for clinical management. We report a case that expanded the spectrum of a rare disease and present a novel diagnostic trap for both pathologists and clinicians. METHODS: Histopathological, immunohistochemical (CD68, CD163, ALK), and molecular (FISH) analyses were performed on a right adrenal tumor from an 81-year-old male. RESULTS: The tumor was diagnosed as ALK-positive histiocytosis. Uniquely, it presented as a primary adrenal mass with unusual morphology. The tumor cells showed marked anaplasia and emperipolesis. Pathology of adrenal tumours: recent advances.

Changes in the nomenclature and classification of adrenal gland diseases are the result of advances in understanding the pathogenesis, germline susceptibility and the clonal-neoplastic nature of diseases of the adrenal gland. Although numerous classification systems have been proposed, the Weiss system remains the standard for distinguishing benign from malignant adult adrenal cortical tumours, but the Helsinki system and the reticulin algorithm are proving to be increasingly useful in difficult cases. Subtypes of adrenal cortical neoplasms, such as myxoid and oncocytic, as well as those occur

Impact of Tumor Arterial Embolization on Hemodynamics During Surgical Resection of Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma in Children.

BACKGROUND: Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma in children present significant intraoperative hemodynamic challenges during surgical resection due to catecholamine release. Preoperative tumor arterial embolization is used to reduce bleeding and stabilize hemodynamics, but its efficacy in pediatric patients remains unclear. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 31 children (aged 3-18 years) undergoing resection of pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma at Beijing Children's Hospital from January 2019 to June 2025. Patients were divided into embolization (n = 12) and control (n = 19) groups

Pro-tumoural effects of vitamin C supplementation in a zebrafish model for SDHB-associated PPGL.

Phaeochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine, chromaffin cell-derived tumours of the adrenal medulla or paraganglia. Germline pathogenic variants in succinate dehydrogenase subunit B (SDHB) are most prevalent and associated with malignancy and poor prognosis. Treatment options are limited, and therapy development is hindered by knowledge gaps concerning the pathomechanism and lack of suitable models. Previously, homozygous sdhb mutant zebrafish larvae showed disease characteristics, and adult heterozygous mutants represented human heterozygous SDHB carriers, portraying
