Incidental discovery of a massive primary retroperitoneal serous cystadenoma following trauma.

A woman in her 70s presented with severe abdominal pain following a mechanical fall. A CT of the abdomen revealed a massive cystic lesion with evidence of rupture, while MRI localised the lesion to the left retroperitoneum; however, its aetiology remained unclear. She underwent laparotomy with extensive adhesiolysis and excision of a large multiloculated retroperitoneal cyst containing approximately 6500 mL of serous and haemorrhagic fluid. Histopathological examination demonstrated a benign serous cystadenoma lined by ciliated serous epithelium with tubal metaplasia and no evidence of atypia.

Metastatic Retroperitoneal Rhabdomyosarcoma in a Child: A Case Report Highlighting the Role of Imaging in Diagnosis, Staging, and Follow-Up.

Retroperitoneal masses in children encompass a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant tumors with a largely nonspecific clinical presentation. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a soft tissue sarcoma that uncommonly arises primarily in the retroperitoneum, a site associated with a comparatively unfavorable prognosis related to delayed diagnosis, large tumor volume at presentation, and frequent invasion of adjacent vascular and digestive structures. We report the case of a five-year-eight-month-old boy who presented with a one-month history of progressive abdominal distension and left lower limb ed

Clinicopathological Spectrum of Head and Neck Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: A Three-case Series.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the ability of organisms that infect the catheterized urinary tract to migrate over the surfaces of Foley catheters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a simple laboratory model, organisms were challenged to migrate across sections of hydrogel-coated latex, hydrogel/silver-coated latex, silicone-coated latex and all-silicone catheters. The sections (1 cm long) were placed as bridges in channels between blocks of agar and the test organisms inoculated onto the agar adjacent to one side of each bridge. The plates were incubated at 37 degrees C for 24 h and examined for growth of th

Difficult Diagnosis of Interdigitating Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Retroperitoneum: A Case Report and A Brief Review of the Literature.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm classified within the M-group of malignant histiocytoses. Its diagnosis poses a significant challenge. This article aims to describe a rare clinical case of IDCS and to illustrate the differential diagnostic process undertaken by the authors in establishing this diagnosis. A 60-year-old woman was admitted for the resection of a retroperitoneal mass discovered via CT scan. Morphological examination revealed a 7.5×5.5×5.0 cm tumor, encapsulated by a thin fibrous capsule. The tumor was composed of 90-95% inflammatory

Optimizing outcomes and accessibility of matched sibling donor transplant for transfusion dependent thalassemia in LMICs.

Severe thalassemia is a life-threatening condition common in many low and middle-income countries. While bone marrow transplantation (BMT) offers a curative option, its accessibility remains limited due to cost and complexity. This study describes a simplified approach to BMT for hemoglobinopathies which is based on relatively common and inexpensive medicines. This study included 176 paediatric patients with transfusion dependent thalassemia who received a matched sibling bone marrow transplant between February 2022 and November 2025 across several centers in Asia and the Middle East. A simpli

CHOROIDAL INFILTRATION IN ERDHEIM-CHESTER DISEASE: A CASE SERIES.

PURPOSE: We describe two cases of choroidal involvement in patients with Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. METHODS: Short case series. RESULTS: The first patient was a 25-year-old man with asymptomatic ECD at the level of bones, lung, and central nervous system. Fundus examination revealed bilateral yellowish choroidal infiltration in the superior macula and nasal midperiphery. After initial mild enlargement of the choroidal lesions, treatment with weekly subcutaneous pegylated interferon α2a was started inducing partial regression of the lesions. The s

A case of giant retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma encasing major vascular structures.

Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a rare benign tumor arising from sympathetic ganglion cells, often located in the retroperitoneum. We report a case of a 33-year-old woman presenting with intermittent low back pain for 2 months. Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal mass (24 × 36 × 68 mm) encasing the inferior vena cava (IVC) and right renal vein, with a high suspicion for GN or lymphangioma. Surgical exploration via laparotomy confirmed a tough, adherent mass (5 × 8 × 10 cm) intimately associated with the IVC and renal vessels. Complete resection with vascular repair was performed. Pathology confirm

A Rare Case of Giant Leiomyoma in the Space of Retzius.

Leiomyoma are benign tumors of smooth muscle origin. Uterine leiomyoma are extremely common; leiomyoma in extraperitoneal spaces, however, are not. There have been several documented cases of leiomyoma in retroperitoneal spaces, though the majority of them have been in the posterior retroperitoneum. Here, we report a patient presenting with a large, firm suprapubic mass, initially thought to be a fundal uterine fibroid. On surgical excision, it was found to be the extremely rare finding of a benign leiomyoma in the anterior retroperitoneum or space of Retzius.

Development and validation of a nomogram for spontaneous closure of duodenal fistulas after infection control in septic patients.

BACKGROUND: In septic patients, the rate of spontaneous closure is lower than in non-infected patients. Few studies have focused on predicting spontaneous closure after sepsis control, which is crucial for guiding treatment decisions such as surgery or observation. This study developed and validated a nomogram to predict the likelihood of spontaneous closure in external duodenal fistulas after infection control in septic patients. METHODS: Between January 2004 and October 2024, patients from centers A and B were included in the development cohort, while those from centers C and D constituted

Pathologic Assessment of Retroperitoneal Sarcomas: A Position Paper By the Transatlantic Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group.

Most primary retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors are malignant, with liposarcomas and leiomyosarcomas being the most common. However, other sarcomas and benign tumors can also occur in this location. Pathologic evaluation of retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) presents unique challenges. Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group with overlapping microscopic features, making accurate classification essential for prognosis and evolving targeted therapies. Core biopsies often capture only a small portion of the tumor, which may result in underestimation of key features such as differentiation, necrosis, and p

A rare entity in the retroperitoneum: Case report of a primary seminoma.

Primary retroperitoneal seminoma is an extremely rare extragonadal germ cell tumor. A 61-year-old male was referred following the discovery of a retroperitoneal mass on routine physical examination. Computed tomography and PET-CT revealed a soft-tissue nodule near the left renal hilum, suggestive of a neoplasm. The patient underwent surgical resection, and histopathology confirmed seminoma. Scrotal ultrasound showed no testicular abnormalities, thereby excluding a metastatic origin and confirming the diagnosis of primary retroperitoneal seminoma. This case underscores the importance of conside

Biallelic NF1 Inactivation and Widespread Loss of Heterozygosity in a Subset of Unclassified Fibromyxoid Mesenchymal Neoplasms.

The integration of next generation sequencing into clinical practice has revolutionized the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors, enabling the discovery of novel tumor entities. We encountered a group of unclassified fibromyxoid mesenchymal neoplasms harboring biallelic NF1 loss of function (LOF) mutations, lacking features of neurofibroma or neurofibromatosis. The tumors were investigated by immunohistochemistry (IHC), targeted DNA and RNA sequencing and DNA methylation profiling. All cases occurred in male patients aged 4-76 years (median, 53 years). Tumor sites included the thigh (2), pelvis (2)

Ectopic Adrenocortical Cancer Originating From the Pancreas: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Malignancies arising from adrenal rests are extremely rare. They may occur in locations such as the retroperitoneum, testes/scrotum, ovaries, kidneys, anterior abdominal wall, spinal cord, and liver, in association with embryological development. In this article, we present a patient with ectopic adrenocortical cancer (ACC) located in the pancreas, along with a review of the relevant literature. A 57-year-old female patient was diagnosed with mixed-type breast cancer (lobular and ductal carcinoma). During further diagnostic evaluations, in addition to a malignant-appearing mass in the left bre

[Scrotal tumour with growth to the retroperitoneum and the kidney].

Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare form of cancer that around 1000 people are diagnosed with every year in the Nordic countries. In this case report, we describe a patient presenting with scrotal swelling, which was later diagnosed as liposarcoma. The tumour grew in the scrotum, through the inguinal canal, retroperitoneal and in close relation to the left kidney. The tumour was removed with radical surgery, and histology showed a dedifferentiated liposarcoma with clean margins. This case report shows the growth potential of liposarcomas and contributes to knowledge about a rare form of cancer.

From Testis to Retroperitoneum: The Role of Radiomics and Artificial Intelligence for Primary Tumors and Nodal Disease in Testicular Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Radiomics and artificial intelligence (AI) offer emerging quantitative tools for enhancing the diagnostic evaluation of testicular cancer. Conventional imaging-ultrasound (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT)-remains central to management but has limited ability to characterize tumor subtypes, detect occult nodal disease, or differentiate necrosis, teratoma, and viable tumor in post-chemotherapy residual masses. This systematic review summarizes current advances in radiomics and AI for both primary tumors and retroperitoneal disease. Ma

A rare case of deep fibrous histiocytoma with low-grade myxoid and dedifferentiated liposarcoma features: clinical, radiological, and histopathological insights.

Deep fibrous histiocytoma (DFH), also termed deep benign fibrous histiocytoma, is an uncommon fibroblastic neoplasm that typically arises in the dermis or subcutis. Occurrence in deep soft tissues is rare and retroperitoneal presentation is exceptional. Distinguishing DFH from soft tissue sarcomas can be challenging when lesions show atypical morphology or focal lipogenic change. We report a giant retroperitoneal DFH displaying low-grade myxoid and dedifferentiated liposarcoma-like area and summarize diagnostic pearls and management considerations. A 53-year-old man presented with postprandial
