The contrary short-term influence of heatwaves on Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis in Singapore - A national time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis are driven by climate variability and are among the most important causes of foodborne disease globally. Studies have largely reported positive associations between ambient air temperature and these diseases. However, those investigating how heatwaves influence these bacterial infections are few and inconsistent. I examined the short-term influence of heatwaves on these bacterial infections in the tropical city-state of Singapore. METHODS: All national reports of Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis in Singapore were analysed in negative binomi

Endovascular management of a non-typhoidal Salmonella-associated mycotic pseudoaneurysm of the iliac artery: a case report.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) usually causes self-limiting gastroenteritis, but can lead to severe invasive infections, such as mycotic pseudoaneurysms, in immunocompromised patients. Here, we present the case of a 62-year-old male with NTS bacteraemia, which was complicated by an iliac artery mycotic pseudoaneurysm. The patient underwent successful endovascular management with a balloon-expandable graft stent, followed by targeted antimicrobial therapy against Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis. The patient achieved favourable clinical and radiological outcomes. This case highlights th

Salmonella meningitis due to horizontal transmission in an extremely premature neonate: A case report.

Salmonellosis is commonly associated with foodborne illnesses in adults. Meningitis, although rare, is a severe complication of a Salmonella infection, associated with high rates of mortality and significant neurological complications and sequelae. Premature infants are particularly susceptible for invasive infections due to their immature immune system. In this case report, we present an unusual case of Salmonella group B, serotype Typhimurium sepsis and meningitis in a 27-week premature neonate on the fourth day of life, resulting from horizontal transmission from mother to child, with fatal

Evaluation of resistance and virulence factors in Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Thompson isolates in the poultry chain.

1.This study investigated antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors in Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Thompson (SET) isolates from broilers in the Brazilian poultry industry.2. Among 44 isolates, 18.18% showed phenotypic resistance, with tetA, sul1 and sul2 genes frequently detected, while sul3 was absent. Two isolates carried clinically relevant resistance genes: blaCTX-M-1 (ESBL) and OXA-48 (carbapenemase).3. The PFGE analysis revealed five distinct clusters with low genetic diversity, which suggested a clonal dissemination pattern. One strain from cluster E showed the high

Determination of Effective Prophylactic Responses of Truncated Flagellin Protein as a Vaccine Candidate Against Uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a major cause of more than 80% of urinary tract infections (UTIs), a global health problem, and the second most common infectious disease. UTIs are responsible for approximately 40% of all nosocomial infections and 50% of all bacteremia. Since an approved vaccine against UTIs is not yet approved, evaluating different antigens, injection routes, and adjuvants is necessary to assess the ideal vaccines. In this study, we constructed a fusion protein composed of a truncated form of FimH antigen, the key virulence factor of UPEC, and the FliC antigen of Salm

Multivalent vaccines for invasive Salmonella disease: need, rationale, and immunological foundations.

Salmonella enterica infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Asian continent, and are increasingly associated with antimicrobial resistance. Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A, B, and C cause enteric fever, while non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars (usually Typhimurium and Enteritidis) cause mainly gastroenteritis which can lead to systemic infections. Vaccines are only licensed against S. Typhi, but different combinations are in clinical development to prevent S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi A or S. Typhi and non-ty

Pathogens without borders: a review on cross-kingdom transmission strategies and pathogenicity of plant and human pathogens.

Emerging evidence indicates that certain plant pathogens-once thought to be restricted to the plant kingdom-can opportunistically infect humans, particularly those who are immunocompromised. This paradigm-shifting recognition of cross-kingdom pathogenicity underscores complex microbial adaptability and highlights an underexplored public health concern. This review is a compilation of current knowledge on bacterial (Pantoea, Burkholderia, Agrobacterium), fungal (Fusarium, Aspergillus, Curvularia), and viral (e.g., TMV, PMMoV) plant pathogens implicated in human disease. Shared eukaryotic cellul

PagN: a multifunctional outer membrane protein in Salmonella virulence and host interaction.

Salmonella utilizes multiple virulence factors to adhere to, invade, and replicate within host cells, ensuring systemic dissemination. Among these, the outer membrane protein PagN functions as both an adhesin and invasin, playing a central role in early infection stages and in establishing persistent intracellular populations. PagN expression is controlled by the PhoP/PhoQ two-component system and is specifically induced under host-related environmental conditions such as acidic pH, low magnesium concentration, and the presence of antimicrobial peptides—conditions typically encountered within

Molecular dynamics simulation of a novel multi-epitope vaccine design against Salmonella enterica paratyphi A using a computational approach.

Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A is a significant pathogen responsible for enteric fever, particularly in developing countries, contributing to high morbidity and mortality. Current vaccines predominantly target S. Typhi, leaving a critical gap in protection against Paratyphi A strains. The absence of an effective vaccine for Paratyphi A is a significant public health concern, given its potential for outbreaks and long-term healthcare burdens. Designing a targeted vaccine is essential to reduce the incidence of enteric fever and improve global health outcomes. This study focuses on deve

Preventive-curative functional amino acid-supplemented diet improves health, growth performance, and resilience of growing pigs under an immune challenge.

Immune system stimulation (ISS) alters the metabolic demand for amino acids (AA), and amino acid-based nutritional strategies may mitigate performance reduction in pigs subjected to sanitary challenge conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extra supplementation of a combination of functional AA (FAA, +20% threonine, methionine, and tryptophan) preventively (pre-ISS), curatively (during-ISS) or both on the performance of growing pigs challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) and poor housing conditions. Fifty-two entire male pigs (21.7 ± 4.6 kg) were allocated to four dietary

Identification of Salmonella Infantis persistence in poultry products in the Netherlands with a role for the pESI plasmid.

As Salmonella is known to be able to persist in processing environments, we investigated whether the detection of Salmonella clusters from retail poultry can be linked to a persistent source. A total of 69 Salmonella Infantis isolates from retail poultry products from four different producers between 2008 and 2020 were sequenced and their sensitivity to antibiotics was determined. The six phylogenetic clusters spanning multiple months identified by sequence analysis indicate persistence of Salmonella. In addition, the pESI megaplasmid, which is known to harbor a diversity of resistance and per

Effects of Ligilactobacillus salivarius on the control of pullorum disease and cecal microbiota in red-feathered native chickens.

Pullorum disease (PD), caused by Salmonella Pullorum (SP), remains a persistent challenge in native chicken production in Asia. Recurrent outbreaks and reliance on antibiotics have raised concerns about antimicrobial resistance. This study established a reproducible clinical PD model in red-feathered native chickens (RFCs) and evaluated Ligilactobacillus salivarius (LS) as a potential alternative to antibiotic. Oral administration of a field SP isolate (SPB6) at 1 × 10⁸ CFU per chick for four consecutive days induced typical PD signs and persistent bacterial colonization, whereas a single-dose

Next-generation live vector vaccine targeting Mycoplasma synoviae and Mycoplasma gallisepticum via recombinant Salmonella.

Avian mycoplasmosis has a considerable financial impact on the global chicken industry with Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) being the dominant causes. Currently, inactivated vaccines provide minimal cross-protection and can't induce high levels of mucosal immunity, indicating the need to develop more effective immunisation platforms. This study aimed at designing and testing rationally engineered live recombinant vaccines using Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium expressing MS- and MG-specific antigens, GrpE and CrmA, to produce a robust immune response.
