BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (DiGeorge Syndrome) confers a high risk for infective endocarditis (IE) due to coexisting conotruncal heart defects, prosthetic material, and immune deficiency. Diagnosing IE on a right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) conduit can be challenging.
CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old female with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and repaired pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect (RV-PA conduit) presented with febrile syndrome two months after pacemaker implantation. Initial transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was negative. She was treated for a pacemak

BACKGROUND: 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic disorder caused by a deletion at chromosome 22q11.2. Chronic arthritis may be occasionally observed in these, if this manifestion represents a concomitant association of two diseases or a rare complication of Di George syndrome is still a debate. This study aims to describe a retrospective, multicenter analysis of patients with 22q11DS, who developed chronic inflammatory arthritis, focusing on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management.
METHODS: An e-mail survey was distributed to pediatric centers, identifying patients diagnose

INTRODUCTION: The corpus callosum is one of the five main cerebral commissures. It is key to combining sensory and motor functions. Its structure can be pathological (dysgenesis) or completely absent (agenesis). The corpus callosum dys- or agenesis is a rare disease (1:4000 live births), but it can have serious mental effects.
METHODS: In our study, we processed the data of 64 pregnant women. They attended a prenatal diagnostic center and genetic counseling from 2005 to 2019 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Semmelweis University.
RESULTS: The pregnancies had the following ou

INTRODUCTION: 22q11.2 deletion is associated with conotruncal anomalies and immunological aberrations. Given the common embryonic origin of conotruncus and thymus, conotruncal anomalies may be associated with immunological aberrations irrespective of 22q11.2 deletion. We planned to study the prevalence of immunological aberrations and 22q11.2 deletion among patients with conotruncal anomaly to understand the impact of their interplay.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Preoperative children (age <12 years) with conotruncal anomalies were evaluated for clinical dysmorphism, lymphocyte subsets by flowcytome

INTRODUCTION: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) are defined by recurrent infections, allergies, autoimmunity, and malignancies. Neurologic symptoms are one of the major components of some immunodeficiency syndromes, such as Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT), Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS), and Purine Nucleoside Phosphorylase (PNP) deficiency, which are considered as the primary involvement. Various pathological mechanisms, DNA repair disorders, metabolic abnormalities, and autoimmune phenomena have also been linked with neurological conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: We retrospectively assess

Di George syndrome is a disorder well known by pediatricians, caused by deletions in chromosome 22q11.2 and presenting with a wide range of clinical abnormalities, including immunodeficiency. Thymic function is diminished, leading to a decreased output of naive T cells (naïve T-helper cells, naïve T-regulatory cells, naïve cytotoxic T cells) as compared to healthy age matched controls. Immunedysregulation, such as autoimmunity and immunoproliferation are common in these patients, because the lack of a correctly functioning T cell repertoire. treatment of these complication are a challenge in m

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the most frequent microdeletion syndrome and is mainly characterized by congenital cardiac defects, dysmorphic features, hypocalcemia, palatal dysfunction, developmental delay, and impaired immune function due to thymic hypoplasia or aplasia. Thyroid anomalies are frequently reported in patients with 22q11.2DS, although only a few well-structured longitudinal studies about autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) have been reported.
AIM: To longitudinally evaluate the frequency of thyroid anomalies and ATD in patients with 22q11.2DS.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a severe genetic syndrome characterized by cognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia. Neuroimaging alterations have been extensively reported in 22q11DS, both in gray and white matter structures. However, a considerable variability among the results affects the generalizability of the findings to date. Herein, we reviewed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) findings in 22q11DS, their association with psychosis and cognition, and the implications of DTI studies on neurodevelopment in 22q11DS. We also investigated differences

DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), also known as "22q11.2 deletion syndrome" (22q11DS) (MIM # 192430 # 188400), is a genetic disorder caused by hemizygous microdeletion of the long arm of chromosome 22. In the last decades, the introduction of fluorescence in situ hybridization assays, and in selected cases the use of multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, has allowed the detection of chromosomal microdeletions that could not be previously identified using standard karyotype analysis. The aim of this review is to address cardiovascular and systemic involvement in children with DGS, provide ge

In pediatric age, duodenal hematoma is rare and generally occurs following a closed abdominal trauma due to the crushing of the duodenum against the rigid plane of the spine; it rarely follows anticoagulant therapy, pancreatitis, bleeding disorders, vasculitis, tumors or upper digestive endoscopy. Duodenal hematoma is a rare cause of obstruction of the upper gastrointestinal tract and acute pancreatitis, and the diagnosis is sometimes difficult and late. On the other hand, the identification of the pathology in its initial stages allows the young patients to be subjected to a conservative trea

In contrast to general opinion, the issue of primary immunodeficiency is far from just a pediatric medicine; a large number of patients with primary immunodefciencies are not only treated, but also diagnosed in adulthood. The most important manifestation of these diseases are serious, unusual or ill-treatable infections. Some primary immune deficiency diseases manifest themselves in adulthood - mainly common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and Goods syndrome (hypogammaglobulinemia with thymoma). Due to successful treatment, adults also suffer from illnesses manifestation of which begin in ear

Aortic arch anomalies refer to congenital malformations of position or branching pattern of the aortic arch. To-date, only a few small studies have documented prenatal detection of aortic arch anomalies. In this article, we share our experience in detecting aortic arch anomalies. Foetal echocardiograms, clinic and genetic histories of 33 patients who had been diagnosed with aortic arch anomaly from 2007 to 2015 were reviewed. In 15 patients, right aortic arch with mirror image branching; in 13 patients, right aortic arch with left ductus arteriosus and aberrant left subclavian artery; in three

L-Proline is a multifunctional amino acid that plays an essential role in primary metabolism and physiological functions. Proline is oxidized to glutamate in the mitochondria and the FAD-containing enzyme proline oxidase (PO) catalyzes the first step in L-proline degradation pathway. Alterations in proline metabolism have been described in various human diseases, such as hyperprolinemia type I, velo-cardio-facial syndrome/Di George syndrome, schizophrenia and cancer. In particular, the mutation giving rise to the substitution Leu441Pro was identified in patients suffering of schizophrenia and

Deletion at 22q11.2 responsible for Di George syndrome (DGs) is a risk factor for early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD). To date, all patients reported with 22q11.2 deletions and parkinsonian features are negative for a family history of PD, and possible mutations in PD-related genes were not properly evaluated. The goal of this paper was to identify variants in PD genes that could contribute, together with 22q11.2 del, to the onset of parkinsonian features in patients affected by Di George syndrome. To this aim, sequencing analysis of 4800 genes including 17 PD-related genes was performed in

Experimental and clinical data suggest a complex interaction between the endocrine and immune systems. However, only few epidemiological studies are available dealing with endocrine complications in different types of primary immunodeficiency diseases. It is well documented that there is a close association between immunodeficiency syndromes and the development of autoimmune disorders. Most of the endocrine dysfunctions are caused mainly by immune dysregulation and autoimmunity like in APECED (autoimmune polyendocrinopathy, candidiasis, ectodermal dystrophy) and IPEX (immune dysregulation, pol

BACKGROUND: We report the ophthalmic findings of a patient with type Ia glycogen storage disease (GSD Ia), DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), cataract and optic nerve head drusen (ONHD).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old white woman, born at term by natural delivery presented with a post-natal diagnosis of GSD Ia. Genetic testing by array-comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) for DGS was required because of her low levels of serum calcium. The patient has been followed from birth, attending the day-hospital every six months at the San Paolo Hospital, Milan, outpatient clinic for metabolic diseases and

BACKGROUND: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome affects multiple organ systems, and the neurological manifestations are an important aspect of this disorder. Many are aware of cardiac anomalies associated with this uncommon genetic disorder. However, the different types of seizures, electroencephalography (EEG), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings seen in this condition are not appreciated.
METHODS: Medical records of four patients with epilepsy due to 22q11.2 deletion syndrome were retrospectively reviewed for documentation of seizure types, EEG, and brain MRI findings. In addition

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of 22q11.2 deletion in fetuses with a prenatal diagnosis of right aortic arch without intracardiac anomalies (RAA-no ICA).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all fetuses with RAA-no ICA diagnosed prenatally at three referral centers, between 2004 and 2014. A detailed sonographic examination was performed in each case, including visualization of the thymus and of the head and neck vessels to identify the presence of an aberrant left subclavian artery (ALSA). Karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis for diagnosis of 22q11.2 deletion were
