Isolated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) deficiency is a rare form of central hypothyroidism that requires long-term levothyroxine replacement therapy. We report a rare case of isolated TSH deficiency in which Graves' disease developed after long-term thyroid hormone replacement therapy, followed by a recovery of the TSH secretory capacity. A 46-year-old woman with isolated TSH deficiency developed thyrotoxicosis with positive TSH receptor antibody levels and a preserved thyroid uptake on scintigraphy. After radioactive iodine therapy (131I, 13 mCi), her thyroid function stabilized, and a TR

BACKGROUND: Methylcobalamin is a naturally occurring, active form of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for the growth and development of healthy nerves and red blood cell production. Usually, the requirement of vitamin B12 is increased in thyrotoxicosis due to increased utilization and accelerated turnover imposed by increased metabolism. Vitamin B12 is generally well-tolerated and widely used in clinical settings. Parenteral vitamin B12 treatment in hospitalized patients is considered an effective therapy regardless of its etiology.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report the case of a 26-y

Thyrotoxicosis refers to the clinical state resulting from elevated thyroid hormone levels and may occur with or without underlying hyperthyroidism. Recognizing non-thyroidal and iatrogenic causes is essential for accurate diagnosis and management. A 50-year-old woman presented to a cardiologist due to complaints of palpitations. Electrocardiogram and echocardiogram were performed showing sinus tachycardia. Beta-blocker therapy was prescribed with recommendations for thyroid function testing. The laboratory tests performed in a specialized endocrine clinic confirmed transient thyrotoxicosis wi

BACKGROUND: Excess iodine from iodinated contrast media (ICM) can lead to thyroid dysfunction. Children, especially neonates and premature infants, may be more vulnerable due to their immature thyroid physiology.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using EMBASE, MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane, Web of Science, and Scopus. Inclusion criteria were studies in children ≤ 18 years receiving ICM and that reported effects on thyroid function. Exclusion criteria included topical iodine exposure, prenatal administration, and irrelevant endpoints. Case reports, reviews, and abstracts were also exclud

BACKGROUND: Cardiac complications associated with poorly controlled Graves' disease present a significant challenge in managing hyperthyroid patients. The relationship between thyrotoxicosis severity and cardiac complications remains to be confirmed. This study investigates the association between reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) and cardiac complications in hospitalized patients with uncontrolled Graves' disease.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated 178 hospitalized patients with uncontrolled Graves' disease from 2016 to 2020. After excluding cardiac diseases unrelated to Graves' dise

Background/Objectives: Graves' disease (GD) is a prevalent autoimmune thyroid disorder marked by thyrotoxicosis, goiter, and Graves' orbitopathy (GO). Recent studies highlighted its association with dysbiosis. This systematic review aims to update the current literature and clarify the distinctive microbial signatures and dysbiosis associated with GD/GO. Methods: A systematic search for relevant studies was conducted across multiple databases (2000-2023), employing appropriate keywords. Relevant data were extracted from 25 eligible studies. Results: Microbiota analysis from 19 GD studies (713

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HPP) is a rare disorder characterized by episodic weakness with hypokalemia, most commonly associated with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) in the setting of endogenous hyperthyroidism. We present a unique case of a 32-year-old male patient with a history of hypothyroidism who developed recurrent episodes of acute paralysis due to iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis from levothyroxine over-replacement. Notably, each episode occurred shortly after corticosteroid administration, suggesting a dual-trigger mechanism. The patient presented with profound, predominantly proxi

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction has been linked to hematologic abnormalities, but whether thyroid function has a causal role in myeloproliferative diseases (MDs), including chronic myeloproliferative disease (CMD), remains unclear. We used Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the potential causal effects of thyroid-related traits on MD risk.
METHODS: A two-sample MR analysis was performed using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. Outcome data for CMD and MD, excluding chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), were obtained from the Finnish R12 cohort (European ancestry). Gene

Although tachyarrhythmias are associated with thyrotoxicosis, the association with ventricular fibrillation is unknown. This case reports a recurrent ventricular fibrillation with Graves' disease that was successfully treated with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. A 33-year-old woman presented with ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest. She was diagnosed with Graves' disease and was taking antithyroid drugs, but her hyperthyroidism was poorly controlled. The patient received intensive care unit care, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenator, ventilator, and renal replacement the

BACKGROUND: Cordarone, a benzofuranic-derivative iodine-rich medication primarily used for tachyarrhythmias, frequently induces alterations in the peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormones, predominantly by inhibiting 5'-deiodinase activity, resulting in elevated serum thyroxine and reverse triiodothyronine (T3) levels, alongside diminished serum T3 concentrations. Overt thyroid dysfunction, which manifests as either Cordarone-induced thyrotoxicosis. Linseed oil or flaxseed oil is a type of oil that comes from seeds. It is one of the oldest oils on the market. INTRODUCTION: Acute mesenteric ischemia is a rare but serious vascular complication often accompanied by intestinal damage. Treatment typically involves surgical and endovascular procedures. Proper diagnostic and interventional techniques are critical for preventing complications, resulting in short bowel syndrome, sepsis or need for repeated surgeries. Based on the case report, our publication provides an overview of managing acute mesenteric ischemia with intestinal involvement, highlighting both conventional and modern treatment approaches.

CONTEXT: Thyroid dysfunction and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are common endocrine disorders with substantial public health implications. Increasing evidence suggests that alterations in thyroid function may influence glycemic regulation and the risk of T2DM. However, long-term population-based evidence on this relationship remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to summarize the association between thyroid function and T2DM using findings from the Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS), a large community-based cohort with nearly 2 decades of follow-up.

Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) is a serious thyroid dysfunction that represents a significant complication of pharmacological therapy in cardiology patients. The development of AIT can substantially complicate the management of cardiac arrhythmias, posing a major clinical challenge. We present the case of a patient in whom amiodarone was initially effective in the treatment of atrial fibrillation but subsequently led to type II amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis and exacerbation of the atrial arrhythmia. This case highlights the need for regular monitoring of patients treated with amio

A Caucasian man in his 20s with no known medical history presented to the emergency department with acute flaccid quadriparesis following a high-carbohydrate meal and strenuous physical activity. Initial evaluation revealed profound hypokalaemia (1.7 mmol/L; reference 3.5-5 mmol/L), marked QTc prolongation (594 ms), and mild troponin I elevation (51 ng/L; reference <40 ng/L). He reported two similar episodes over the preceding year that had been attributed to dehydration. Thyroid function testing demonstrated severe hyperthyroidism with suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone (<0.003 mIU/L; ref

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare variant presentation associated with thyrotoxicosis. It is characterised by acute hypokalaemic paralysis due to intracellular potassium shift. We describe a man in his early 30s who presented with sudden-onset flaccid quadriparesis and transient self-reverted broad-complex tachycardia. Arterial blood gas analysis revealed severe hypokalaemia (1.2 mmol/L; reference range 3.5-5.1 mmol/L). Thyroid function tests demonstrated suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone (<0.01 mIU/L; reference range 0.4-4.0 mIU/L) with markedly elevated free triiodothyronine
