The Role of Thyroid Elastography in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus or Celiac Disease Who Have Negative Thyroid Autoantibodies.

Background/Objectives: Autoimmune thyroiditis affects physical and cognitive development in children. Therefore, early detection can prevent symptoms that could lead to lifelong changes. Autoimmune thyroiditis can frequently accompany type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and celiac disease (CD). The goal in this study is to evaluate its usability as a screening method by assessing thyroid elasticity in children with negative thyroid autoantibodies and T1DM or CD. Methods: This cross-sectional, case-control, single-center study was conducted with children who had applied to the Pediatrics outpatient clinic o

The ketogenic diet alleviates autoimmune thyroiditis caused by Th17/Treg imbalance by inhibiting the HMGB1/NLRP3 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT), caused by immune-mediated thyroid dysfunction, lacks effective dietary interventions. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of a ketogenic diet (KD) in a murine model of iodine-induced AIT. METHODS: Sixty 8-week-old NOD.H-2h4 mice were randomized into three groups: wild-type mice on a normal diet (WT + ND), AIT model mice on a normal diet (AIT + ND), and AIT model mice on a KD (AIT + KD). AIT was induced in model groups via 0.05% sodium iodide administration for 8 weeks, followed by 4 weeks of KD intervention in the AIT + KD group. Outcome

γ-Secretase inhibitor ameliorates thyroid autoimmune damage via blocking Notch1 signaling and reducing γδT17 cells in EAT mice.

In order to explore if γ-secretase inhibitor can regulate γδT17 cells by blockading Notch1 signaling pathway and then affect thyroid autoimmune damage in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) mice. Twenty-four female C57BL/6 mice, 6 to 8-week-old, were randomly divided into NC and EAT groups, and EAT group included EAT-A (pTg treated) and EAT-B (treated with DAPT before pTg) subgroups. HE staining was conducted to observe the pathological changes of thyroid tissue. ELISA was adopted to measure the concentrations of thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and interleukin 17A (IL-17A) in serum. The pr

A Case Series of Steroid-Responsive Encephalopathy Associated With Autoimmune Thyroiditis (SREAT) With Atypical Thyroid Lab and Imaging Findings.

Steroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT) is a rare, potentially reversible neuropsychiatric syndrome linked to autoimmune thyroid disease. However, its clinical heterogeneity may stray from the most accepted diagnostic criteria often leading to a delay in its recognition. In this paper, we describe two patients who presented with subacute encephalopathy for which the diagnosis of SREAT was established after the detection of elevated antithyroid antibody titers and the exclusion of alternative etiologies. Notably, both cases exhibited atypical features, n

Vitamin E Intake Modulates the Effect of Selenomethionine on Sexual Function and Depressive Symptoms in Reproductive-Age Women with Euthyroid Autoimmune Thyroiditis: A Pilot Study.

Oxidative stress appears to be implicated in both the initiation and progression of autoimmune thyroiditis. Selenomethionine, which exhibits antioxidant properties, has been shown to reduce thyroid antibody titers in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant, may protect against the development of autoimmune thyroiditis, and that its supplementation has been associated with improvements in female sexual function. The objective of the present pilot study was to determine whether vitamin E intake modulates the effects of selenomethio

Prognostic Factors and Recurrence in Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma.

Background and Objectives: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is generally indolent; however, a subset exhibits aggressive features, reflecting biological heterogeneity. In the era of treatment de-escalation and active surveillance, accurate risk stratification is essential. We aimed to evaluate recurrence, identify factors associated with recurrence, determine predictors of lymph node metastasis (LNM) at diagnosis, and assess management strategies at our center. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 302 patients with PTMC. Associations between clinicopathological varia

Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Massive Pericardial Effusion in Severe Primary Hypothyroidism: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial effusion is a recognized manifestation of overt hypothyroidism, but progression to cardiac tamponade is rare. In tuberculosis-endemic settings, diagnostic focus often favors tuberculous pericarditis, risking delayed recognition of reversible endocrine causes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old Black African woman from Northern Uganda presented with five months of progressive dyspnea, orthopnea, and generalized edema, followed by acute pleuritic chest pain. She had a history of hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. No prior thyroid disease, tuberculosis, malignancy,

Successful Pregnancy After Therapeutic Apheresis in a Complex Case of PCOS, Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Recurrent Implantation Failure, and Potential Occupational Environmental Exposure.

Both polycystic ovary syndrome and Hashimoto thyroiditis are commonly associated with female infertility. Each condition may impair reproductive function through distinct but sometimes overlapping mechanisms, and their co-occurrence has been associated with an even higher risk of infertility. In this single-case report, we describe a 33-year-old female with established polycystic ovary syndrome (anti-Müllerian hormone [AMH] 20 ng/mL) and autoimmune thyroiditis (anti-thyroid peroxidase [anti-TPO] antibodies 917 IU/mL) with infertility persisting since 2020. Pediatric celiac disease and coexisting immune-mediated conditions: a five-year single-center study from North-Eastern Romania.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is among the most common chronic gastrointestinal disorders in childhood and is frequently associated with other autoimmune conditions. The 2020 ESPGHAN guidelines revised pediatric celiac disease diagnosis by allowing non-biopsy confirmation in selected cases. Despite growing global data, evidence from Eastern Europe remains limited, and contemporary regional data describing pediatric celiac disease in routine clinical practice remain scarce. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center study including 58 pediatric patients with confirmed celiac disease fol

A Rare Case of Primary Thyroid Lymphoma.

Primary thyroid lymphomas (PTL) are a unique malignancy that arises from within the thyroid gland and is not typically considered in the differential diagnosis of thyroid cancers. PTL is strongly associated with underlying autoimmune thyroiditis; despite this association, there are no screening guidelines. Management of PTL involves chemotherapy, contrasting with the surgical and radioactive iodine therapies employed in differentiated thyroid cancers. We report a case of a 68-year-old male with a history of hypothyroidism and multiple comorbidities who presented with a rapidly enlarging, painl

Risk of Thyroid Cancer in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults with Hashimoto Thyroiditis: A 27-Year Follow-Up Study.

INTRODUCTION: Adult subjects with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) have an increased risk of developing thyroid cancer. Whether children and adolescents with HT carry the same risk is still a matter of debate. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of thyroid nodules and cancer in pediatric autoimmune thyroiditis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 1,050 adolescents and young adults (825 females, 225 males) who were regularly followed in nine Italian pediatric endocrinology centers. The median follow-up period was 5.8 years (range: 0.6-27.6 years)

Assay-dependent variability in free thyroxine (FT4): differential interference related to immunoassay design in a patient with subclinical hypothyroidism.

In clinical practice, thyroid function tests (TFTs) usually comprise thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4), with free triiodothyronine (FT3) measured less frequently. We report a 76-year-old woman with autoimmune thyroiditis presenting with raised TSH and incongruously elevated FT4. The discordance between biochemical findings and clinical status prompted further investigations for assay interference. TFTs were assessed using four different immunoassay platforms and equilibrium dialysis. Additional studies included heterophilic antibody blocking and polyethylene glycol (PE

Targeting METTL3 Attenuates Thyroid Inflammatory Injury by Restoring Th17/Treg Balance through a YTHDC2-m6A-Dependent KDR/VEGFA Loop.

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is characterized by extensive lymphocytic infiltration and progressive destruction of thyroid follicular cells (TFCs), yet the molecular mechanisms underlying persistent thyroid injury remain poorly defined. Here, methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) mediated N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is identified as a central driver of thyroid inflammation. METTL3 expression and m6A levels were markedly increased in TFCs from AIT patients and EAT mice, and are positively associated with immune inflammation scores. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of METTL3 suppresse
