The impact of hygienic living conditions on the differentiation of male body height at the beginning of the twentieth century in the USSR.

BACKGROUND: The positive changes in hygienic living conditions are commonly believed to explain secular changes in body height and the age of maturity. However, it is difficult to estimate the separate impacts of these factors due to the lack of social and economic data and variations in the sources of information. We hypothesized that final male body height could be associated with various socioeconomic indicators, such as the development of the medical care system, the quality of nutrition, and the level of sanitary and hygienic conditions. Moreover, we hypothesized that male body height cou

Chains of misery: surging invasive group A streptococcal disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We describe the epidemiology of the recent global surge in invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) disease and consider its proximate and distal causes. We highlight important knowledge gaps regarding clinical management and discuss potential strategies for prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: Rates of invasive GAS (iGAS) disease were increasing globally prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since mid-2022, following the worst years of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, many countries with systems to monitor GAS syndromes have reported surges in cases of iGAS concurrent with increased scarlet f

Group A Streptococcus infections in children and adolescents in the post-COVID-19 era: a regional Italian survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite the worldwide increasing incidence of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections reported since December 2022, data on noninvasive GAS (nGAS) infections in the post COVID-19 era are limited. By a self-reported survey performed in an outpatient setting, we investigated the number and clinical features of GAS infections, the diagnostic work-up and the type of treatment utilized. In addition, the rate of influenza vaccination was evaluated. METHODS: In June 2023 family pediatricians involved in the study sent the survey to parents of patients aged 0-16 years. The survey included

Epidemiology of scarlet fever in Victoria, Australia, 2007-2017.

In the last 10-15 years, there has been a global resurgence of scarlet fever, an infection historically associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is unknown whether scarlet fever incidence has increased in Australia. We aimed to examine the incidence, predictors and severity of scarlet fever in the state of Victoria, Australia from 2007 to 2017, analyzing scarlet fever emergency department (ED) presentations, hospitalizations and deaths. Of the 1 578 scarlet fever cases during the study period, most occurred in children aged <10 years (1 344, 85%), in males (882, 56%), and during

Invasive Group A Streptococcus Hypervirulent M1UK Clone, Canada, 2018-2023.

To determine invasive group A Streptococcus trends in Canada, we characterized emm1 isolates collected during 2018-2023. The percentage of hypervirulent M1UK lineage isolates increased significantly, from 22.1% in 2018 to 60.2% in 2023. Genomic analysis identified geographically and temporally associated clusters and genes associated with virulent bacteriophage acquisition.

Clinical Snapshot of Group A Streptococcal Isolates from an Australian Tertiary Hospital.

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) is a human-restricted pathogen that causes a wide range of diseases from pharyngitis and scarlet fever to more severe, invasive infections such as necrotising fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. There has been a global increase in both scarlet fever and invasive infections during the COVID-19 post-pandemic period. The aim of this study was the molecular characterisation of 17 invasive and non-invasive clinical non-emm1 GAS isolates from an Australian tertiary hospital collected between 2021 and 2022. Whole genome sequencing reve

Characterization of a novel covS SNP identified in Australian group A Streptococcus isolates derived from the M1UK lineage.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a human-adapted pathogen responsible for a variety of diseases. The GAS M1UK lineage has contributed significantly to the recently reported increases in scarlet fever and invasive infections. However, the basis for its evolutionary success is not yet fully understood. During the transition to systemic disease, the M1 serotype is known to give rise to spontaneous mutations in the control of virulence two-component regulatory system (CovRS) that confer a fitness advantage during invasive infections. Mutations that inactivate CovS function result in the de-repressio

Beta-hemolytic Streptococci in respiratory illness.

Beta-hemolytic Streptococci are associated with various respiratory illnesses, such as pharyngitis, scarlet fever and pneumonia, highlighting the need for enhanced diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive strategies. Advances in immunology and molecular biology have provided insights into the etiology and host immune responses to these infections, but many questions remain unanswered. Further research is needed to develop advanced diagnostics, explore vaccine candidates, understand immune responses and address antibiotic resistance. Epidemiological studies are crucial to improving our understand

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical interventions and relaxation policies on Class B respiratory infectious diseases transmission in China.

This study investigates the incidence of Class B respiratory infectious diseases (RIDs) in China under the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic and examines variations post-epidemic, following the relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). Two-stage evaluation was used in our study. In the first stage evaluation, we established counterfactual models for the pre-COVID-19 period to estimate expected incidences of Class B RIDs without the onset of the epidemic. In the second stage evaluation, we constructed seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average intervention (SARIMA

Causal Modeling and Thermodynamics: Towards a new convergence of the two fields.

In 1824, Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot paid for the publication of his first book. Unfortunately it sparked little interest, and the young engineer never published another. In quick succession, Carnot served in the military, suffered from scarlet fever, mania, and cholera, and passed away in obscurity at age 36. Two centuries have elapsed since Carnot published his only book. Recognition came later. In particular, Carnot's reasoning inspired scientists to formulate the first and second laws of Thermodynamics. The new science that has emerged around these physical laws is nothing short of breatht
