Vitamin A deficiency in India and seasonality of vitamin A-rich food consumption.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) poses significant health risks and is prevalent in children and adolescents in India. This study aimed to determine the effect of seasonal variation and availability of vitamin A-rich (VA-rich) foods on serum retinol in adolescents. Data on serum retinol levels from adolescents (n 2297, mean age 14 years) from the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (2016-2018) in India were analysed, with VAD defined as serum retinol < 0·7 µmol/L. Five states were selected based on a comparable under-five mortality rate and the seasonal spread of the data collection period. Diet

Depleting retinoic acid synthesis in the nucleus accumbens shell produces a protective phenotype for emotional reactivity and drug-taking in rats.

RATIONALE: In previous work, a convergent transcriptomic approach strongly suggested a role for retinoic acid (RA) in controlling the emotion- and reward-related functions of the nucleus accumbens shell (NAcSh). OBJECTIVE: Here, we causally assess the role of NAcSh RA in controlling anxiety-, emotion-, and reward-related behavior in rats and explore cellular mechanisms that may underlie this phenotype. METHODS: Rats underwent bilateral knockdown of the retinoic acid synthesis enzyme Aldh1a1 in the NAcSh. Anxiety-related behavior was assessed using open-field exploration, elevated plus maze,

Golden Rice: A Quarter-Century of Innovation, Challenges, and the Promise of Better Nutrition.

Golden Rice was first introduced to the scientific community and the wider public 25 y ago and arguably remains the most widely recognized biofortified crop. Unlike most staples, the provitamin A carotenoid biosynthetic pathway is absent in the grain of all known rice cultivars. Scientists therefore relied on modern biotechnology to introduce 2 transgenes that enabled carotenoid production and accumulation, with 80%-90% as β-carotene. The second generation of Golden Rice, incorporating genes from maize and a common soil bacterium, can produce 20-30 μg of β-carotene per gram of edible rice. Alt

Effect of prolonged cooking on pro-vitamin A levels of biofortified East African highland bananas.

Genetically modified East African highland bananas (EAHBs) with elevated levels of pro-vitamin A (pVA) have been developed to address vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in Uganda. The green, mature fruits of EAHBs are traditionally prepared into "matooke," a soft, savory dish made by peeling, steaming, and mashing the fruit. Biofortifying such a culturally embedded food offers an effective approach to improving nutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations. Field trials of pVA-biofortified EAHBs have been conducted at four locations across Uganda, with data collection nearing completion. Howeve
