OBJECTIVE: Previous research has demonstrated that a theoretical model including measures of life stressors, social support, and coping style significantly predicts psychological distress. This study tested plasma pyridoxine (vitamin B6) deficiency status as a predictor of overall psychological distress and specific mood states in this model, controlling for HIV-1 serostatus.

OBJECTIVE: To report a suspected case of isoniazid-induced psychosis in a 31-year-old woman.
CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old white woman without a prior psychiatric history presented with psychotic symptoms suspected to be related to prophylactic treatment with isoniazid after she tested positive to a tuberculin (purified protein derivative) test. The psychotic symptoms resolved partially after isoniazid was discontinued and completely after treatment with olanzapine was begun. The patient remained symptom-free 11 months after discharge from the hospital.

BACKGROUND: A moderate increase in plasma homocysteine level has been reported to be involved in neural tube defects, which can be prevented with folic acid supplementation. Folic acid, vitamins B6- and B12-dependent enzymes are required to metabolize homocysteine. A study in rats showed higher tissue homocysteine levels in riboflavin as well as pyridoxine deficiency. In the present study the effect of preweaning pyridoxine deficiency indicates that the body weight and brain weight of pyridoxine deficient rats were significantly lower when compared to the control rats. Onset and stabilisation of reflex reactions were also delayed in the pyridoxine deficient rats. Maturation of neuromotor coordination in the vitamin deficient group was significantly slow as compared to the control groups. This suggests that the importance of maternal pyridoxine supplementation cannot be overlooked in pregnant women especially after prolonged use of anovulatory steroids.

Forty-three patients on chronic hemodialysis who before the present study had only received a low-dose supplement of folic and ascorbic acid were studied prospectively for one year. Measurements of serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) in resting lymphocyte cultures showed that the level of activity of this enzyme was very low. Under the influence of mitogenic stimuli serine hydroxymethyl-transferase activity was induced 5-20-fold.
