BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an inflammatory disease with autoimmune, environmental, and inherited components directed at the hair follicle, either limited to patchy hair loss over the scalp (Focalis, AF), total loss of scalp hair (Totalis, AT), or total loss of both scalp and body hair (Universalis, AU). Despite multiple treatment modalities, no therapy exists. Vitamin D deficiency in patients with AA/AT/AF influences disease severity and duration, inversely correlating with inflammation histologically.
CASE SUMMARY: Three girls presented with AT (P1), AU (P2), and AF (P3) at the ages

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D has been identified as a potential protective factor in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). We expect to see a stronger association of ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure and CRC crude rates with increasing age since chronic vitamin D deficiency leads to sustained molecular changes that increase cancer risk. The DINOMIT (disjunction, initiation, natural selection, overgrowth, metastasis, involution, and transition) model postulates various stages of cancer development due to vitamin D deficiency and the associated latency period. The purpose of this study is to examine t

Inflammatory flare-up reactions of some dermatomycoses, particularly those caused by zoophilic fungi, are typical and potentially severe adverse effects following the intake of some oral antifungals. However, this condition has not previously been reported with the most frequently used antifungals in dermatology, namely fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine. In this report, we describe five patients, observed over a 10-year period, who presented with inflammatory exacerbations following oral antifungal therapy for dermatomycoses. We also review the literature on inflammatory reactions exa

BACKGROUND: The role of vitamin D supplementation as a treatment for COVID-19 has been a subject of considerable discussion. A thorough understanding of the current evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of vitamin D supplementation for COVID-19 based on randomised controlled trials is required.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether vitamin D supplementation is effective and safe for the treatment of COVID-19 in comparison to an active comparator, placebo, or standard of care alone, and to maintain the currency of the evidence, using a living systematic review approach.

AIM: This study retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness and safety of a local hospital protocol of vitamin D supplementation for preterm infants, which was modified in 2016.
METHODS: We focussed on 99 preterm infants born before 31 weeks of gestation and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at the Femme Mere Enfant Hospital, Bron, France, from 1 January to 31 December 2018. Calcium and urinary calcium were measured, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were monitored monthly and supplementation was adjusted, with 50-120 nmol/L considered normal. The results are presented as m

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem, which has a prevalence of 17.2% in India. As kidney function decreases, there is a gradual deterioration in the regulation of bone mineral homeostasis. Vitamin D is recognized as the central player in the maintenance of bone health in CKD. Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) guidelines suggest that vitamin D supplementation should be given to all CKD patients with serum 25-hydroxy vitaminD (25(OH)D) level < 30 ng/mL. Hence we undertook this study to evaluate the vitamin D status in South Indian pa

Vitamin D metabolism represents a well-integrated, hormonally regulated endocrine unit interlinking calcium and phosphate metabolism. Pathophysiologic processes disturbing vitamin D metabolism comprise classic defects of vitamin D activation and action presenting as different forms of vitamin D-dependent rickets as well as disorders with increased vitamin D activity. The latter may result in hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, and renal calcifications. Acquired and hereditary disorders causing hypervitaminosis D are discussed, including vitamin D intoxication, granulomatous disease, and idiopathic

BACKGROUND: Severe prolonged vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets or osteomalacia. Both can be prevented by sunshine exposure or vitamin D supplementation. Although New Zealand guidance does not recommend vitamin D supplementation for the general population, it can be considered for individuals at risk of vitamin D deficiency. Routine measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) is also considered unnecessary.
METHODS: We investigated the rates of vitamin D supplementation, rickets and osteomalacia in New Zealand, and of 25OHD results in Auckland, over the last two decades.
RESULTS: Vitamin

Calcium and vitamin D are inseparable nutrients required for bone health. In the past half a century, the dietary calcium intake of rural, tribal, and urban India has declined. Though India is the largest producer of milk and cereals, the major source of calcium in India is through non-dairy products. The highest intake of cereals and lowest intake of milk & milk products was observed in rural and tribal subjects whereas, the intake of cereals, milk & milk products were similar in both urban and metropolitan subjects. One of the reasons for lower calcium intake was the proportion of calcium de

Rickets is a disease of the growing child arising from alterations in calcium and phosphate homeostasis resulting in impaired apoptosis of hypertrophic chondrocytes in the growth plate. Its symptoms depend on the patients' age, duration of disease, and underlying disorder. Common features include thickened wrists and ankles due to widened metaphyses, growth failure, bone pain, muscle weakness, waddling gait, and leg bowing. Affected infants often show delayed closure of the fontanelles, frontal bossing, and craniotabes. The diagnosis of rickets is based on the presence of these typical clinica

Vitamin D-dependent rickets type IA (VDDR-IA) is caused by biallelic mutations in CYP27B1. Data regarding genotype-phenotype correlation in VDDR-IA are scarce. Here, we aimed to investigate clinical/genotypic features and long-term follow-up of 13 new cases with VDDR-IA and genotype-phenotype correlation of reported cases in the literature. Thirteen patients with VDDR-IA were evaluated. Eight patients had reached their final height at the time of the study and, for whom, long-term outcome data were analyzed. Further, all VDDR-IA patients in the literature (n:183) were analyzed and clinical-gen

Recent studies have shown the effects of vitamin D on host response to infectious diseases. Some studies detected a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in HIV-infected patients, but scarce information exists for HTLV-1 infection. We conducted a cross-sectional study to evaluate the frequency of hypovitaminosis D in HTLV-1 patients and its relationship with their immune response in HTLV-infected patients and in age- and gender-matched controls at a Brazilian rehabilitation hospital. We compared vitamin D, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumoral necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ)

Sickle bone disease (SBD) is a chronic and invalidating complication of Sickle cell disease (SCD), a multisystem autosomal recessive genetic disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. Mechanisms involved in SBD are not completely known, especially in pediatric age. Among the hypothesized pathogenetic mechanisms underlying SBD are bone marrow compensatory hyperplasia and bone ischemic damage, both secondary to vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC), which leads to cell sickling, thus worsening local hypoxia with a negative impact on osteoblast recruitment. Furthermore, the hypoxia is a strong activa
