Iron deficiency-related abortion and miscarriage burden among women of advanced maternal age: Insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

Advanced maternal age (AMA) is associated with reduced fertility and higher risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Iron deficiency, a leading cause of anemia, has been associated with pregnancy loss. However, the iron deficiency-related burden among AMA women remains poorly quantified. This study aimed to quantify the global burden and geographical inequalities of abortion and miscarriage related to iron deficiency among AMA women. We utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Trends from 1990 to 2021 in the age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate and age-standardiz

Population-Based Cohort Study: Colorectal Cancer Risk Stratification in Symptomatic Patients Using the Faecal Immunochemical Test, Blood Results and Patient Characteristics in Wales.

BACKGROUND: Wales has the highest rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the UK. National guidelines recommend using the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) in patients presenting with symptoms of bowel cancer. FIT ≥ 10 μgHb/g in symptomatic patients is presumed to indicate a > 3% risk of CRC. However, evidence from England and Scotland has found that the risk is lower in certain demographic groups. AIMS: To examine 1-year risk of CRC in Welsh patients with symptoms of suspected bowel cancer by demographics, iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), and FIT. METHODS: Cohort study of adults registered in the W

Dietary iron supplementation attenuates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity by improving myocardial iron homeostasis and reducing ferroptosis-associated injury in mice.

Iron deficiency frequently accompanies chronic heart failure (CHF) and is linked to adverse clinical outcomes. Although intravenous iron replacement has shown clinical benefit in heart failure, whether increasing dietary iron intake can provide cardioprotective effects remains uncertain. In this study, we examined the effects of dietary iron supplementation in a murine model of doxorubicin (Dox)-induced cardiotoxicity. Mice were treated with Dox at 2.5 mg/kg by intraperitoneal injection once weekly for 6 weeks and received either standard chow containing 45 ppm iron or ferric citrate-enriched

Assessment of Serum Ferritin and Red Blood Cell Indices in Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Jharkhand.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) significantly contributes to childhood mortality and disrupts hematological functions. While iron deficiency is a common comorbidity, its diagnosis is often confounded by systemic inflammation (SI), which can affect traditional iron markers such as serum ferritin (SF). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate SF levels and red blood cell (RBC) indices - including mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), MCH concentration (MCHC), and red cell distribution width (RDW) - in children with SAM. METHODOLOGY: This ho

High Prevalence and Clinical Burden of Bleeding Disorder of Unknown Cause in Adolescents With Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Application of New Definition by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC) is increasingly recognized in patients with clinically significant bleeding despite normal haemostatic testing. The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) recently proposed a standardized definition incorporating bleeding phenotype and validated assessment tools. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and clinical impact of BDUC in adolescents with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) using the ISTH definition for BDUC. RESULTS: Among 205 adolescents, 57.6% met criteria for BDUC, including 86.8% of those without an establish

Addressing micronutrient deficiencies and vitamin metabolism disorders in pediatric pulmonary hypertension: a strategic proposal for low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric pulmonary hypertension (PH) is traditionally managed under a strict hemodynamic paradigm, often overlooking systemic metabolic and nutritional drivers. This review introduces the "Cellular Deprivation Model" to evaluate how specific micronutrient deficiencies and metabolic blocks accelerate pulmonary vasculopathy. METHODS: A systematic, PRISMA-compliant search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE for literature published between January 2000 and April 2026. Keywords intersected pediatric PH with malnutrition, avitaminosis, iron deficiency, and inborn errors of metabolism. Out

Evaluating the Impact of Ferritin Testing: Iron Status of the Donor Pool, Changes to Hemoglobin Deferrals, and Effects on Product Availability.

Blood collectors in many jurisdictions globally have implemented ferritin testing of their donor populations as an additional donor safety measure. Where performed, ferritin testing is generally conducted on a selective basis, restricted to certain populations perceived to face higher risk for or from iron deficiency or applied to periodic rather than all donations from donors. The wide array of ferritin testing configurations that currently exist, together with underlying differences in donation eligibility policies, suggests the impact of ferritin testing on blood center and donor outcomes-b

Microcytic or Iron Deficiency Anemia as a Risk Factor for Cerebral Sinus Venous Thrombosis-Systematic Review and Exploratory Meta-analysis.

Background Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare but severe neurological condition. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been suggested as a risk factor. Recent experimental data in iron-deficient rodents show a potential pathophysiological link between IDA and increased thrombus formation, resulting from iron-restricted erythropoiesis. Given the high prevalence of IDA, understanding its role in CSVT is of major clinical interest. Methods We conducted a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis, searching PubMed and Embase up to January 30, 2026, for original English-language art

The Contribution of Bleeding Assessment Score and Pictorial Blood Loss Assessment Chart to the Diagnosis of Von Willebrand Disease in Adolescent Girls With Iron Deficiency Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common among adolescents and is an important driver of iron deficiency anemia. However, clinicians under-recognize inherited bleeding disorders. Iron deficiency transiently elevates von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII levels, both of which are acute-phase reactants, thereby masking quantitative VWF deficiency. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study enrolled iron-deficient adolescent girls at a single center. We used a structured bleeding history (ISTH-BAT), menstrual blood loss quantification (PBAC), and coagulation testing after

Effect of amaranth flatbread on maternal anthropometry during pregnancy: Evidence from a cluster-randomized controlled trial in Southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal undernutrition and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) remain major public health challenges in Ethiopia, contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes and poor maternal health. Amaranth, a nutrient-dense pseudocereal, has demonstrated potential to improve maternal nutritional status, yet evidence from rigorous trials is limited. To evaluate the effect of amaranth grain flatbread on maternal anthropometric indicators - mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), body mass index (BMI), and gestational weight change (GWG) - as proxies for overall nutritional status among pregnant women in H

Livedoid Vasculopathy in a Young Woman With Elevated Factor VIII and Lipoprotein(a): A Case Report With Consideration of Future Pregnancy.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a rare, chronic vascular disorder marked by painful, recurrent ulcerations that primarily affect the lower extremities. It is frequently associated with hypercoagulable states, although its pathophysiology remains incompletely understood. We present the case of a 25-year-old woman with a longstanding history of LV, elevated factor VIII, increased lipoprotein(a), recurrent kidney stones, and iron deficiency anemia who presented with worsening lower-extremity ulcerations. An extensive workup excluded other hypercoagulable and connective-tissue conditions, leaving el

Irregular follow-up is associated with poorer dietary adherence and iron deficiency in children with celiac disease.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between follow-up regularity and dietary adherence, growth, and micronutrient status in children with celiac disease (CD). In this single-center, prospective observational study, children on a gluten-free diet (GFD) for ≥ 1 year were classified over a fixed 24-month window as regular follow-up (RFU; ≥ 4 visits) or irregular follow-up (IFU; < 4 visits) according to the number of outpatient visits. Adherence was assessed by parent- and child-reported modified Biagi scores and by anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA (TGA) normalization (< 20 RU

Case Report: Steroid-responsive recurrent iron-deficiency anemia in pediatric collagenous gastritis.

Collagenous gastritis (CG) is a rare inflammatory disorder of the stomach and an uncommon but important cause of iron-deficiency anemia in children. Currently, there are no accepted therapeutic guidelines for treating these patients. We report a case in an 11-year-old boy who presented with recurrent iron-deficiency anemia requiring blood transfusion with an ultimate diagnosis of CG on repeat endoscopy. While iron supplementation and proton pump inhibitors failed to achieve clinical remission, the addition of oral prednisone effectively corrected the anemia. Notably, endoscopy improved despite

Photosystem I structural fusion with IsiA enhances light-harvesting capabilities of filamentous cyanobacterium during iron deficiency.

During iron stress, cyanobacteria produce iron-stress-inducible protein A (IsiA), which associates with photosystem I (PSI) to support cell growth. In most cyanobacteria, the stress induces formation of large IsiA18-PSI3 complexes. However, some species, including Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, studied in this work, form an unusual, smaller PSI-monomer-based IsiA-PSI supercomplex containing a unique fusion of IsiA with the PSI subunit PsaL, IsiA-PsaL. In this study, genetically tagged IsiA-PsaL was used to isolate several IsiA-PsaL-containing supercomplexes composed of multiple IsiA homologs. A combin

How I Treat Heavy Menstrual Bleeding in Patients with Bleeding Disorder of Unknown Cause.

Bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC) describes patients with a clinically relevant bleeding phenotype despite normal routine hemostatic testing. Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is among the most common symptoms in BDUC, alongside other muco-cutaneous bleeding manifestations. We recommend that women presenting with HMB undergo a systematic evaluation for an underlying bleeding disorder. This assessment should include a structured bleeding and family history, exclusion of acquired causes of bleeding, and comprehensive laboratory investigations. In case of a clinically relevant bleeding pheno

Higher lipoprotein(a) concentration is associated with a blunted response to iron repletion in women with low iron stores: a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a pro-inflammatory lipoprotein, and higher concentrations are associated with increased risk of deficiency anemias. OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships between Lp(a) concentration and indicators of iron status, anemia, and inflammation before and after an 8-week iron supplementation intervention in women of reproductive age with low iron stores (ferritin <25 μg/L). METHODS: A secondary analysis of a randomized two-arm parallel trial was conducted. Fifty-two participants (age = 25 ±7 y; body mass index = 23 ±3 kg/m2) were given an iron supplement (32 mg e
