Serum vs. Dietary Magnesium and Cardiometabolic Outcomes in Saudi Adolescents.

Background/Objectives: Magnesium (Mg) is an essential micronutrient that participates in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, with well-established functions in glucose and lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health. Although serum Mg is routinely used in clinical practice, circulating concentrations may not accurately represent total body Mg status because of tight physiological regulation. The present study evaluated the associations of serum Mg concentration and dietary Mg intake with cardiometabolic outcomes in a cohort of Saudi adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 234 S

Impact of macronutrients and monsoon on the AM fungal community structure within lateral root systems of Hevea brasiliensis.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important root symbionts that enhance nutrient acquisition, water uptake, stress tolerance, and soil ecosystem functioning in terrestrial plants. In perennial plantation systems like Hevea brasiliensis, understanding the dynamics of root-associated AMF communities under varying seasonal and nutrient conditions is essential for developing sustainable nutrient management strategies, particularly in emerging rubber growing regions. In the present study, we investigated the, composition, diversity, and seasonal dynamics of AMF communities directly associated

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi reshape carbon-nitrogen balance and metabolism in nitrogen-limited escarole (Cichorium endivia L.).

Nitrogen nutrition remains a major challenge for sustainable crop production, particularly under the current need to reduce fertilizer inputs. This study evaluated whether inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improves the physiological, nutritional, and metabolic performance of escarole (Cichorium endivia L.) plants under nitrogen-limited conditions. Escarole plants were grown under two nitrogen regimes, full nitrogen supply and 25% of the optimal nitrogen concentration, either inoculated or non-inoculated with Rhizophagus irregularis. Plant growth, mineral composition, soluble

Inflammation and Micronutrient Status of Children and Adolescents in 12 Countries Are Only Weakly Associated: The Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia Project.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation may bias the estimation of burden of certain micronutrient deficiencies; however, few studies have examined the magnitude and direction of this bias in school-age children and adolescents. OBJECTIVES: Associations between biomarkers of inflammation [C-reactive protein (CRP) and α-1-acid-glycoprotein (AGP)] and multiple micronutrient biomarkers [serum folate (SFO), red blood cell folate (RBC folate), serum vitamin B12, serum 25(OH)D, and serum zinc] were examined in children aged 5 to 19 y. METHODS: This analysis included 13 cross-sectional surveys of children (n = 46

Micronutrients in adult critically ill patients: lessons learned and the path toward precision.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite strong biological plausibility, empiric high-dose micronutrient supplementation has failed to improve outcomes in critically ill patients. This review synthesizes evidence from the past 18 months and outlines the necessary transition toward biomarker-guided precision nutrition. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence has further challenged routine high-dose micronutrient therapy. High-dose intravenous vitamin C failed to improve outcomes and was associated with potential harm in patients with sepsis, COVID-19, severe burns, and post-cardiac arrest syndrome. In contrast, a

Investigative Algorithms for Disorders Affecting Plasma Zinc Concentrations: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The trace element zinc is essential for multiple biological processes and analyzed in suspected cases of deficiency or toxicity. A systematic approach to abnormal results will aid the diagnosis of a patient with low or high zinc concentration in plasma in a more clinically efficient and cost-effective manner. CONTENT: True zinc deficiency can be attributed to both acquired and inherited causes; however, falsely low concentrations may be obtained through sample timing, during inflammatory states, and in the presence of certain medications and hypoalbuminemia. High concentrations of

Maternal calcium, phosphorus, and supplement intake before and during pregnancy and their association with preterm birth risk: based on a large cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is a global epidemic, defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, and is an important risk factor for neonatal death, morbidity and abnormal childhood development. Premature birth is currently regarded as a complex disease influenced by multiple factors. Common risk factors include nutritional deficiency during pregnancy, maternal obesity, environmental exposure, infection and inflammation, among which maternal nutrition during pregnancy is an important modifiable factor. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between maternal dietary calcium, phosphorus i

Phosphate starvation response 1 (PHR1): a versatile master regulator shaping plant resilience beyond phosphate deprivation.

In the last two decades, the transcription factor phosphate starvation response 1 (PHR1) and its homologues in Arabidopsis and other plant species have emerged as undisputed master regulators of phosphorus starvation response (PSR). The role of Suppressor of Yeast Gpa1 (SYG1)/PHOsphate metabolism 81 (PHO81)/Xenotropic and Polytropic Retrovirus receptor 1 (XPR1) (SPX) proteins as negative regulators of PHR1 activity, and binding of this transcription factor to the P1BS element of the target phosphate starvation-inducible genes during the regulation of PSR, is well established. Given the central

The Potential Role of Iron Homeostasis and Ferroptosis in Exercise Nutrition and Health.

Iron is an essential trace element that participates in multiple physiological processes, including oxygen transport, electron transfer, DNA synthesis, and red blood cell production. Iron loss is particularly severe among athletes, so maintaining iron homeostasis is crucial for sports nutrition and health. Excess iron, iron deficiency, and ferroptosis can lead to muscle disorders and health issues, including sarcopenia, muscular atrophy, myocardial fibrosis, skeletal muscle injury, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders. Maintaining iron homeostasis within physiological limits is esse

A mycorrhiza-inducible phosphate transporter SlPT3 regulates phosphate uptake, iron homeostasis, and arbuscule development in tomato under combined nutrient stress conditions.

Interactions between phosphate (Pi) and zinc (Zn) or iron (Fe) nutrition in plants have been widely studied; however, the underlying mechanisms of their cross-talks in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) plants remain obscure. Here, we examine the physiological and molecular responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) to the combination of Pi, Zn and/or Fe nutrient stresses during symbiosis with Rhizophagus irregularis, revealing the existence of a tripartite Pi-Zn-Fe cross-talk in AM symbiosis. Interestingly, the mycorrhiza-activated SlPT3, a member of the PHOSPHATE TRANSPORTER 1 (PHT1) gene family

Biochemical phosphorus allocation is linked to photosynthetic phosphorus-use efficiency in a phosphorus-impoverished environment.

Highly efficient phosphorus (P)-use strategies have evolved in plants, allowing them to thrive in severely P-impoverished environments. However, it remains unclear how allocating leaf P to biochemical fractions, including specific P-containing metabolites, contributes to instantaneous photosynthetic P-use efficiency (iPPUE) and the position of species along the leaf economics spectrum (LES). We measured LES-associated traits (leaf mass per area, light-saturated photosynthetic rate, and P and nitrogen concentrations) and iPPUE in 12 coexisting Proteaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae and Ericaceae from

Dimorphic-root ideotype demonstrates increased rice yield in nutrient-deficient paddy fields in Madagascar.

Demand for rice (Oryza sativa L.) is rapidly increasing in sub-Saharan Africa; however, its productivity is constrained by nutrient-poor paddy soils, particularly those deficient in N and P. Improving root system architecture offers potential to enhance nutrient uptake efficiency and increase yield under such conditions. This study aimed to identify the most effective root phenotype for enhancing grain yield under the nutrient-deficient soil conditions in Madagascar. Overview of the Zinc Functional Interactome Through Health Hallmarks and Medical Conditions.

Zinc is an essential micronutrient involved in structural, catalytic, and regulatory functions across all levels of biological organization. Despite substantial advances over the past two decades, the zinc literature remains highly fragmented, with mechanistic, nutritional, and clinical findings often reported in isolation. Additionally, the synergistic interactions between zinc and other micronutrients-particularly minerals and vitamins-are dispersed across multiple research domains, complicating efforts to understand their integrated roles in maintaining homeostasis. Recent developments in a

Novel supplemental guidelines for zinc, copper, and manganese in bovines, integrating net requirements, native dietary occurrence, and the boundaries of homeostatic regulation.

A long-standing objective in ruminant nutrition is to ensure an adequate supply of the key trace metals Zn, Cu, and Mn, while accounting for bioavailability and nutritional interactions, and not exceeding tolerance. In practice, however, dietary supplementation often far exceeds reference nutritional guidelines, largely as a precaution against the multiple uncertainties of trace mineral supply. Current reference recommendations are determined using fixed and highly conservative uptake coefficients, an approach that overlooks both the opportunities and the limitations of absorptive regulation,

Myofibrillar protein accumulation but reduced protein synthesis in PDCD4-depleted myotubes.

Skeletal muscle is critical to whole-body functionality and homeostasis. The mammalian/mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a nutrient/growth-factor sensitive positive regulator of skeletal muscle mass. Amongst other substrates, mTORC1 phosphorylates the ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K1). Activated S6K1 acts through multiple effectors, including programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4), to promote mRNA translation and protein synthesis. Much of what is known about PDCD4 is in non-muscle cells. We previously demonstrated that the effect of PDCD4 differs between myoblasts and myotubes.

Phosphorus enrichment does not enlarge the predicted CO2 fertilization effect on forest carbon sequestration.

The capacity of nutrient-limited forests to enhance carbon (C) sequestration under elevated CO2 (eCO2) remains a critical uncertainty in C cycle modeling. While existing evidence suggests that low phosphorus (P) bioavailability may constrain CO2 fertilization effects on plant growth, the extent to which this limitation modulates ecosystem responses to eCO2 in forests adapted to P-deficient soils remains poorly understood. Here, using eight P-enabled models, we simulated the magnitudes and mechanisms through which P bioavailability interacts with eCO2, emulating an ecosystem-scale P enrichment

Associations between dietary patterns and adequate intake of climate-sensitive micronutrients among young children living in Siaya County, Kenya: Findings from the ALIMUS study baseline data.

BACKGROUND: Climate change impacts food security in sub-Saharan Africa due to harvest losses and micronutrient reductions in staple foods. We aimed at identifying dietary patterns and their associations with climate-sensitive micronutrients (iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A) among young children in rural Kenya. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data (N = 626; age range: 6-23 months, male sex: 54%) of a cluster-randomized controlled trial for nutrition interventions in Siaya county. Nutrient adequacy ratios (NARs) were calculated from semi-quantitative food frequency data. Dietary patterns were der

Overlaps in mammalian iron and manganese homeostasis: recent advances.

Iron and manganese are essential nutrients yet toxic in excess. Given this, levels of these metals are carefully regulated in the body by specific molecular mechanisms. In this review, we discuss recently reported overlaps in iron and manganese homeostasis in mammalian systems, with a focus on intestinal absorption and gastrointestinal excretion. We begin with the current understanding of iron and manganese homeostasis, then present causes and consequences of imbalances in levels of these metals in the body. Notably, while manganese is best known as a neurotoxicant, multiple recent studies hav

Real-time nanomolar vitamin monitoring in sweat using an electrochemical skin-attached device.

Invasive and inconvenient blood tests hinder the diagnosis and treatment of micronutrient deficiencies, which affect billions worldwide. Wearable sweat sensors offer a noninvasive and real-time alternative. However, on-body monitoring of multiple low-abundance vitamins in sweat remains challenging. Here, we show a wearable electrochemical platform that utilizes bioreceptor-functionalized gold nanoflower/sulfur and nitrogen codoped carbon to detect six low-concentration vitamins in sweat (vitamins B1, B2, B7, B9, B12, and D) with nanomolar-level sensitivity.
