Prevalence of protein-energy wasting among non-dialytic and dialytic chronic kidney disease patients in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is a frequent and prognostically adverse complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Despite its clinical importance, African populations have been underrepresented in prior systematic reviews. This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of PEW among patients with CKD in Africa. METHODS: PubMed, AJOL, and EMBASE were systematically searched for relevant studies published between 1980 and 2025. Meta-analytic techniques were used to estimate the pooled prevalence of PEW among African CKD populations. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO

Risk factors for loss of skeletal muscle mass in patients with chronic kidney disease on a low-protein diet.

OBJECTIVES: A low-protein diet (LPD) is recommended for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to prevent a further decline in renal function. However, its impact on muscle mass in these patients remains unclear. This study investigated the risk factors for loss of muscle mass in patients with CKD on an LPD. METHODS: Eighty-four patients with predialysis CKD (59 men, mean age 61.9 ± 11.5 y) who participated in a multicenter randomized controlled trial initiated in 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. We collected data on baseline blood and urine tests, body composition, and dietary records

Effects of Malnutrition on In-Hospital and Discharge Outcomes Among Young Adults Hospitalized with Gastrointestinal Cancers: National Estimates from the United States.

PURPOSE: Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is common in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and may worsen inpatient outcomes. Contemporary national data describing the impact of PEM among young adults with GI malignancies are limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using HCUP NIS data from 2018 to 2021. We identified hospitalizations of adults aged 18 to 39 years with GI cancers using ICD 10 CM codes C15 to C26. We defined PEM using ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes recorded during the index hospitalization; therefore, PEM reflects clinically documented/coded malnutrition rather than t

Type 5 Diabetes Mellitus: Pathophysiology, Clinical Phenotype, and Nutritional Management.

Type 5 Diabetes Mellitus (T5DM) is an emerging diabetes phenotype linked to chronic undernutrition. It predominantly affects young, lean individuals in low- and middle-income countries. After its formal recognition by the International Diabetes Federation in 2025, T5DM resurfaced as a clinically relevant insulin-deficient phenotype. It is now viewed as distinct from classical autoimmune and insulin-resistant forms of diabetes. This review synthesises recent evidence on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics, and management of T5DM. Recent studies show that T5DM is influenc

Persistent inflammation, immunosuppression and catabolism syndrome and malnutrition in critically ill patients with sepsis: A multi-center prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Persistent Inflammation, Immunosuppression, and Catabolism Syndrome (PIICS) was introduced as a clinical endotype of chronic critical illness and is frequently observed in patients with sepsis. Although nutritional therapy may affect immune function and disease progression, the relationship between malnutrition, nutritional delivery, and PIICS remains unclear. We herein investigated the incidence and outcomes of PIICS and examined its relationship with acute-phase nutritional therapy and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) malnutrition in intensive care uni

Tandem ECMO/CRRT medical nutrition therapy clinical practice points: A literature review and Delphi consensus on clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo tandem extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) have a high risk of metabolic disturbances, malnutrition, and fluid imbalances. ECMO/CRRT tandem therapy is becoming more prevalent in use; however, there are limited evidence-based guidelines for optimizing nutritional management. In this review, we examine the current literature on nutritional strategies for tandem ECMO and CRRT patients and provisional, consensus-informed clinical practice points to support individualized nutritional interventions. METHODS: We

Micronutrient Status in Children Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa: A Cohort of 349 Patients in a Referral Center for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious illness in which more than half of all deaths are due to malnutrition. Critically low energy and protein intake are known causes of massive weight loss, whereas micronutrient deficiencies due to a low-calorie food pattern remain poorly characterized in children with AN. Micronutrient deficiencies in AN, such as selenium deficiency, are known to increase anxiety and the risk of suicide. Two large studies in adults highlighted frequent selenium and copper deficiencies; this information is lacking in children. The present study aimed to provide a comp
