[Nutritional support in the comprehensive management of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in congenital epidermolysis bullosa].

UNLABELLED: Congenital epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetically heterogeneous disorder characterized by blistering and erosions of the skin and mucous membranes. The dystrophic form of EB is particularly associated with severe complications including cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and gastrointestinal tract involvement (esophageal strictures, malabsorption). These conditions frequently lead to protein-energy malnutrition, significantly worsening patient prognosis and quality of life. The purpose of the study was to present a clinical case of nutritional support implementation

Clinical Impact of Nutritional Intervention on Pressure Injury Healing in a Paraplegic Patient: A Case Report.

Pressure injuries are common complications in patients with limited mobility, particularly those who are bedridden. These wounds not only cause pain and reduce quality of life but also lead to prolonged hospitalization, increased risk of infection, and higher healthcare costs. Among the various contributing factors, malnutrition plays a crucial role by impairing collagen synthesis, weakening immune function, and delaying tissue repair. Adequate nutritional support-particularly sufficient protein and energy intake-is therefore an essential component of comprehensive pressure injury management.

Not just about weight: Identifying hidden nutritional vulnerability after radical cystectomy.

Patients undergoing radical cystectomy face substantial nutritional challenges, yet dietary intake patterns and their adequacy remain poorly defined. In this prospective observational study of 25 ERAS-managed patients, energy and protein adequacy was low during the first postoperative week, while body weight remained stable - likely influenced by fluid retention. Significant weight loss emerged by day 14 (-2.3%; p < 0.001), which increased by day 30 (-5.3%; p < 0.001), despite dietetic follow-up and improvements in dietary intake. Patients requiring nasogastric decompression experienced greate

Macronutrient, Micronutrient Supplementation and Monitoring for Patients on GLP-1 Agonists: Can We Learn from Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery?

Background/Objectives: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are increasingly prescribed for people living with obesity and type 2 diabetes due to their efficacy in reducing appetite and body weight. However, by inducing caloric restriction and altering gastrointestinal physiology, GLP-1RAs may predispose patients to nutritional deficiencies. This review aimed to synthesise current evidence on energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral status in GLP-1RA users, and contextualises these findings with metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) guidelines. While metabolic and bariatric surger

Protein-Calorie Malnutrition Is Associated with Altered Colonic Mucosal Microbiota in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Background/Objectives: Protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) is common among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the relationship between PCM and the gut microbiota in patients with IBD remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between PCM and the colonic mucosal microbiota in patients with IBD. Methods: Colonic mucosal samples were obtained from 24 IBD patients with PCM and 24 IBD type-matched patients without PCM. PCM was defined as a body mass index (BMI) < 18.5 kg/m2 and/or weight loss of ≥10% within the preceding 6 months. The full-length bacterial

[An integrated approach to enteral and parenteral nutrition in intensive care: a case report].

Parenteral nutrition (PN), developed since the 1960s with the pioneering work of Dudrick, today represents a safe therapeutic option both as exclusive support and as an integration to enteral nutrition (EN). In critically ill patients, the risk of malnutrition is high due to profound metabolic alterations and nutritional therapy must be modulated according to the stage of the disease, avoiding both overfeeding and underfeeding. We present the case of a polytraumatized adolescent admitted to intensive care following a serious motorcycle accident. After an initial stabilization phase, early EN w

[Nutrition and the Kidney: Beyond Restriction].

Chronic kidney disease is a growing global health concern, driven by aging and comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension. Proper nutrition is essential to slowing disease progression and reducing metabolic and cardiovascular complications. Protein-energy wasting is common in patients with CKD stages 4-5 and those on dialysis, associated with the accumulation of uremic toxins that trigger systemic inflammation, anorexia, acidosis, and muscle catabolism. Nutritional assessment should be a standard of care and conducted periodically, incorporating anthropometric parameters, biochemical mark

Impact of Marasmic Malnutrition on Visceral Leishmaniasis: Progression and Treatment Efficacy in a Murine Model.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition and visceral leishmaniasis are major public health problems that are responsible for millions of deaths across many countries. Leishmaniasis development and progression are associated with the host immune status. In this context, malnutrition can directly affect the course of leishmaniasis, impairing several components of the immune system. Moreover, malnutrition directly interferes with the tropism of Leishmania in organs, affecting host susceptibility. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the influence of nutritional status on the establishment, progress

Seronegative refractory celiac disease complicated by severe malnutrition, duodenal ulceration, and thromboembolic events in a young male: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Refractory celiac disease (RCD) is a rare and severe form of celiac disease (CD) marked by persistent villous atrophy and malabsorption despite strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. The seronegative variant lacks classical serologic markers, complicating diagnosis and delaying treatment. This delay may result in life-threatening complications, including ulceration, severe malnutrition, thromboembolism, and even substance dependence due to chronic pain. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 15-year-old male with a 10-year-long history of gastrointestinal co

Personalized Nutrition Strategies for Patients in the Intensive Care Unit: A Narrative Review on the Future of Critical Care Nutrition.

Introduction: Critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs) are at high risk of malnutrition, which can result in muscle atrophy, polyneuropathy, increased mortality, or prolonged hospitalizations with complications and higher costs during the recovery period. They often develop ICU-acquired weakness, exacerbated by sepsis, immobilization, and drug treatments, leading to rapid muscle mass loss and long-term complications. Studies indicate that adequate protein and calorie intake can decrease mortality and improve prognosis and recovery. However, optimal implementation remains a critic

Nutrition recovery after critical illness: toward a personalized, multimodal approach.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although survival after critical illness has improved, many intensive care unit (ICU) survivors experience persistent muscle wasting, malnutrition and functional decline - all of which are key components of postintensive care syndrome (PICS). This review discusses the metabolic and nutritional challenges faced after ICU discharge, explaining why addressing these issues through personalized recovery strategies is both timely and clinically relevant. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence shows that ICU survivors typically achieve 50-60% of their energy and protein requirements dur

Burden of malnutrition and sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis: pathophysiology, assessment, and management.

Malnutrition and sarcopenia are highly prevalent and robustly associated with reduced quality of life, disease progression, and poor outcomes, including complications and mortality, in patients with cirrhosis. Their pathophysiology is multifactorial, involving inadequate dietary intake and malabsorption, impaired liver functional reserves, altered energy, protein, and ammonia metabolism, systemic inflammation, hormonal dysregulation, and lifestyle or environmental influences. Despite extensive research, unresolved issues remain regarding optimal diagnostic criteria, as current approaches vary

The role of nutritional support in wound healing in low- and middle-income countries.

Burn injuries impose a significant global health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to surgical interventions is limited. In such settings, supportive measures, especially nutrition, play a central role in recovery. We report the case of a 30-year-old man with ∼70% total body surface area scald burns, including superficial and deep partial-thickness injuries. On admission, he was hemodynamically stable but at high risk for malnutrition. Multidisciplinary care included fluid resuscitation, antimicrobial dressings, antibiotics, and early nutrition. Energy and p
