Associations between new obesity indices and abnormal bone density in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

UNLABELLED: The clinical data analysis found that, compared with the traditional obesity index, the waist-weight ratio (WWR) has more advantages in predicting abnormal bone mineral density in subjects with type 2 diabetes. WWR may serve as a new predictive indicator for osteoporosis in T2DM patients. PURPOSE: This study was designed to explore the correlation between obesity-related indices and bone mineral density (BMD) and its influencing factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. METHODS: A total of 528 patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited. Glucose tolerance, insulin sti

The correlation between hepatic controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) value and insulin resistance (IR) was stronger than that between body mass index, visceral fat area and IR.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) is a novel marker for quantifying hepatic fat accumulation. Insulin resistance (IR) plays a major role in the pathogenesis and natural history of hepatic steatosis. This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between CAP value and IR. METHODS: This study included a total of 420 patients with overweight or obesity who came to the obesity clinic at Tianjin Union Medical Center. Vibration-controlled transient elastography examination was conducted to detect CAP and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) values. Body composition,

Urinary Equol and Equol-Predicting Microbial Genera Are Favorably Associated with Body Fat Measures among Chinese Adults.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have investigated the intake of dietary isoflavones in relation to obesity risk, whereas the association using objective biomarkers of isoflavones, particularly equol (a gut-derived metabolite of daidzein with greater bioavailability than other isoflavones) has been less studied. In addition, the associations between equol and gut microbiota profile at the population level remain to be fully characterized. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify equol-predicting microbial species and to investigate the associations of equol-predicting microbial species and urinary excretion

Development of a humanized anti-FABP4 monoclonal antibody for potential treatment of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women diagnosed in the U.S. and worldwide. Obesity increases breast cancer risk without clear underlying molecular mechanisms. Our studies demonstrate that circulating adipose fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP, or FABP4) links obesity-induced dysregulated lipid metabolism and breast cancer risk, thus potentially offering a new target for breast cancer treatment. METHODS: We immunized FABP4 knockout mice with recombinant human FABP4 and screened hybridoma clones with specific binding to FABP4. The potential effects of antibodies on breast

Assessing the prevalence of obesity in a Russian adult population by six indices and their associations with hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolaemia.

The anthropometric index that best predicts cardiometabolic risk remains inconclusive. This study therefore assessed the prevalence of obesity using six indices and compared their associations with obesity-related cardiometabolic disorders. We determined obesity prevalence according to body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body fat percentage and fat mass index (FMI) using data from the Know Your Heart study (n = 4495, 35-69 years). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) provided predictive values of each index for

Correlation of weight-adjusted waist index with diabetic retinopathy in US adults aged ≥ 40 years: the NHANES 2005-2008.

The effect of obesity on diabetic retinopathy (DR) has been under scrutiny in recent years. The weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) has been reported to better assess the degree of centripetal obesity in humans, with a higher WWI indicating a higher amount of body fat. The present study is the first to investigate the relationship between WWI and DR and to assess the difference in the predictive ability of WWI and other obesity indices for DR. This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2008. Researchers collected compl

Research progress on bariatric surgery for hyperuricemia.

Hyperuricemia is closely linked to obesity. As lifestyles and dietary patterns evolve, the prevalence of hyperuricemia has been on the rise. Bariatric surgery, an efficacious intervention for morbid obesity and its associated metabolic disorders, not only manages the weight of patients with severe obesity but also exerts beneficial therapeutic effects on hyperuricemia and gout. Moreover, it demonstrates substantial efficacy against other obesity-related metabolic conditions. However, the dramatic fluctuations in serum uric acid levels and acute gouty attacks in the immediate postoperative peri

A clinician's guide to effects of obesity on childhood asthma and into adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity, one of the most common chronic conditions affecting the human race globally, affects several organ systems, including the respiratory system, where it contributes to onset and high burden of asthma. Childhood onset of obesity-related asthma is associated with high persistent morbidity into adulthood. AREAS COVERED: In this review, we discuss the disease burden in children and adults to highlight the overlap between symptoms and pulmonary function deficits associated with obesity-related asthma in both age ranges, and then discuss the potential role of three distinct mec

Potential Mechanisms of Epicardial Adipose Tissue Influencing Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Heart failure (HF) is the predominant terminal stage and the leading cause of mortality in cardiac disease. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) affects roughly 50% of HF patients globally. Due to the global aging population, the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality of HFpEF have gradually increased. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), as a key visceral adipose tissue around the heart, affects cardiac diastolic function and exercise reserve capacity. EAT closely adheres to the myocardium and can produce inflammatory factors, neurotransmitters, and other factors through autocrine

The user-centered design and development of a childhood and adolescent obesity Electronic Health Record tool, a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood and adolescent obesity are persistent public health issues in the United States. Childhood obesity Electronic Health Record (EHR) tools strengthen provider-patient relationships and improve outcomes, but there are currently limited EHR tools that are linked to adolescent mHealth apps. This study is part of a larger study entitled, CommitFit, which features both an adolescent-targeted mobile health application (mHealth app) and an ambulatory EHR tool. The CommitFit mHealth app was designed to be paired with the CommitFit EHR tool for integration into clinical spaces for sh

[Research progress of weight-adjusted waist index and the association with adverse health outcomes].

Anthropometric indexes play a crucial role in identifying obesity. However, as an internationally commonly used indicator of obesity diagnosis, BMI has limitations in distinguishing lean body mass from fat mass. The weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), a novel anthropometric index, assesses adiposity through standardized waist circumference for weight, which presents an excellent capacity to predict the morbidity and mortality risks of various diseases. However, research on WWI is still in the exploratory stage, and there is a lack of unified standards for using this indicator to determine obesi

Development of a sex-specific visceral fat area estimation using discrete multi-wavelength near-infrared spectroscopy measurements in Korean individuals.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A high level of visceral fat area (VFA) is associated with obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors. VFA measured by computer tomography (CT) scan is accurate but has limitations for everyday use. Meanwhile, near-infrared (NIR) light penetrates the superficial layers of the human body so that fat content can be measured just as CT imaging measures fat accumulation. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study evaluated whether discrete multi-wavelength NIR spectroscopy (DMW-NIRS) can be used to measure abdominal fat as a satisfactory alternative to a CT scan. 290 subjects were enrolled

Loss of MER Tyrosine Kinase Attenuates Adipocyte Hypertrophy and Leads to Enhanced Thermogenesis in Mice Exposed to High-Fat Diet.

Obesity is characterized by low-grade inflammation that originates predominantly from the expanding visceral adipose tissue, in which adipocytes respond to lipid overload with hypertrophy, and consequently die by apoptosis. Recruited adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) take up the excess lipids and remove the dead cells; however, long-term exposure to high concentrations of lipids alters their phenotype to M1-like ATMs that produce pro-inflammatory cytokines and resistin leading to insulin resistance and other obesity-related pathologies. Mer tyrosine kinase is expressed by macrophages and by be
