A Koro-Like Presentation of Somatic Delusional Disorder in a Young Male With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Case Report From the United Arab Emirates.

Koro-like syndrome (KLS) is considered a non-epidemic, culturally decontextualized variant of Koro, a culture-bound syndrome first identified in Southeast Asia. Classic Koro is marked by acute anxiety and the belief that one's genitalia are retracting into the body, often occurring in epidemic clusters influenced by cultural and societal beliefs. In contrast, KLS arises in non-endemic settings and is typically seen in individuals with underlying psychiatric conditions - such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis, or delusional disorders - without the presence of shared cultural nar

Erotomania in Alzheimer's Dementia: A Rare but Clinically Important Association.

Alzheimer's dementia is a common condition in old age psychiatry, typically presenting with memory impairment, confusion and behavioural disturbance. Erotomania is a rare psychiatric syndrome characterised by the fixed belief that another person, usually someone of higher social or economic status, is in love with the individual. The co-occurrence of erotomania in Alzheimer's dementia is highly unusual. We present a classical case of secondary erotomania in a patient with Alzheimer's dementia, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and management complexities associated with this presentation.

[Schizophrenia and catatonia: from ICD-10 to ICD-11. German version].

The classification of psychotic disorders has undergone a variety of changes. Since Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum's (Kahlbaum 1874) first descriptions of catatonic states and Emil Kraepelin's (Kraepelin 1883) nosological classification of psychotic syndromes in the second half of the nineteenth century, the diagnostic criteria for these disorders have been repeatedly modified, significantly impacting clinical practice. Eugen Bleuler (Bleuler 1911) coined the term "schizophrenia", emphasizing the disturbances in thinking, feeling and acting that he had observed. With the introduction of the 11th version

Severe Catatonia in Early-Onset Schizophrenia Successfully Treated With Lorazepam and Aripiprazole in a 16-Year-Old Girl: A Case Report.

Catatonia is a severe but often underrecognized neuropsychiatric condition in adolescents. We present the case of a 16-year-old girl with early-onset schizophrenia who developed acute catatonic symptoms during a relapse following risperidone reintroduction. The clinical presentation raised a diagnostic dilemma with neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). A lorazepam trial led to partial improvement, but symptom resolution occurred only after adding low-dose aripiprazole. This case underscores the importance of early identification of catatonia in adolescents, careful differentiation from NMS, an

Hypopituitarism Accompanied with Delusion: The Effects of Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Hypopituitarism can cause various psychiatric disorders. We herein report the case of a 60-year-old female with hypopituitarism who presented with severe hyponatremia, impaired consciousness, and delusional disorder. Brain imaging revealed a pituitary macrotumor with hemorrhaging, and the laboratory findings suggested panhypopituitarism. Glucocorticoid replacement therapy improved the hyponatremia, but the delusions persisted. Growth hormone replacement therapy successfully normalized the patient's insulin-like growth factor-1 levels and notably led to the disappearance of delusions. This case

Comment on Current Investigations into the Postfinasteride Syndrome.

Few dermatologic problems carry as much emotional overtones as the complaint of hair loss, while the best way to alleviate the emotional distress related to the hair loss is to effectively treat it. With the advent of effective pharmacologic agents, the options for managing male pattern hair loss (MPHL) and alopecia-related distress have expanded. Oral finasteride represents a major breakthrough, based on an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, and observations on the phenotype of the respective genetic defect of type 2 5-alpha reductase. Clinical studies have demonstrated both a h

Exercise as a transdiagnostic intervention for improving mental health: An umbrella review.

Exercise is beneficial for mental health in general, but no review has systematically assessed its potential transdiagnostic nature, i.e. whether it is beneficial across specific disorders. We performed a systematic umbrella review of meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise in participants with mental disorders defined according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), assessing exercise's transdiagnostic nature with TRANSD criteria, including eight meta-analyses (six included in the TRANS

Acceptability and Determinants of Opportunistic Screening for Breast Cancer in Indian Women.

BACKGROUND: Screening for breast cancer has been effective in decreasing mortality. Mammography is not readily available in resource-limited countries like India. Annual clinical breast examination has been demonstrated to be as effective as biennial mammography in reducing mortality with much less cost. In absence of an organized systematic screening program opportunity of women visiting the hospital can be used to educate and screen. The current study was designed to assess the acceptability, determinants of acceptability and effectiveness of opportunistic breast cancer screening. METHODS:

Suicide Attempts in First Episodes of Major Psychiatric Disorders With Psychotic Features.

Suicidal behavior is prevalent with first psychotic episodes, but reports of associated factors involve inconsistent findings and emphasis on schizophrenia. We evaluated suicide attempt rates and associated risk factors in 395 first-episode patients with various DSM-5-TR diagnoses with psychotic features, comparing 83 suicidal patients to others. Suicide attempt risk averaged 21.0%, with the final diagnosis ranked as follows: major depression, bipolar I depression, bipolar I mixed features, schizoaffective-depressed, unspecified psychosis, schizophrenia, schizoaffective-bipolar, bipolar I mani

Capgras Syndrome Triggered by Marital Separation: A Rare Case of Trauma-Induced Delusional Misidentification.

Capgras syndrome is a rare psychiatric condition classified under delusional misidentification syndromes, characterized by the belief that a familiar person has been replaced by an identical impostor. Although it is most commonly observed in association with schizophrenia, neurodegenerative diseases, or structural brain lesions, it may also arise in the context of acute psychological trauma or severe emotional disturbance. We present the case of a 46-year-old African American woman with no prior psychiatric or neurological history who presented to an outpatient psychiatry clinic accompanied by

Transition from schizotypal disorder to non-affective psychotic disorders including schizophrenia: A nationwide Swedish cohort study.

This study evaluated the transition rates from schizotypal disorder to non-affective psychosis and schizophrenia in particular aiming to identify clinical and demographic factors associated with these transitions. We conducted a nationwide cohort study using data from the Swedish Patient Register and the Cause of Death Register, including patients aged 18 and older diagnosed with schizotypal disorder (ICD-10 F21) between 2006 and 2017. Cox proportional hazards regression was employed to assess the associations between baseline characteristics and transitions to schizophrenia (ICD-10 F20) and o

[A phenomenological approach to psychopathology of imagination: Development of a descriptive instrument - Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination].

This paper is a French translation of the Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination (EAFI), an instrument for a semi-structured, phenomenological exploration of psychopathology of imagination, particularly within the schizophrenia-spectrum. In this paper, we provide a French translation of the EAFI together with an introduction about the phenomenology of imagination and its experiential alterations. Furthermore, the paper includes a study of the interrater reliability of the EAFI, which was examined in a diagnostically heterogeneous sample of 20 inpatients. The interrater agreement rang

[A clinical case of diabulimia in type 1 diabetes mellitus: Psychopathological mechanisms and psychosomatic relationships].

In type 1 diabetes mellitus (type 1 DM), an eating disorder (ED) may occur, referred to as «diabulimia,» in which patients use insulin to control body weight, contributing to the decompensation of endocrinopathy. In the presented clinical case, a patient (35 years old) with a 10-year history of type 1 diabetes mellitus intentionally refuses regular insulin administration in order to reduce body weight. The psychopathological qualification of the phenomenon underlying the ED presented as diabulimia in this patient corresponds to grandiose notions as part of schizotypal disorder (F21). The pecul

Schizotypal Traits in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Impact on Social, Emotional and Behavioral Functioning.

Background: Schizotypal traits are considered to be clinical and cognitive features of Schizotypal Disorder in children (SDc). These traits are also seen in children and adolescents with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study examines the influence of schizotypal traits (and their severity) on the capacity of children with ASD to manage emotions, develop relationships with others, and adapt in school and family life. Methods: The Schizotypal traits of 63 children (6-12 years old) with High Functioning ASD were measured by the Melbourne Assessment of Schizotypy in Kids (MAS

Childhood trauma and hippocampal-dependent memory across the psychosis spectrum: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the processes underlying the relationship between developmental trauma and psychosis remain to be elucidated, alterations in hippocampal-dependent memory (HDM) processing may underlie this relationship. We hypothesized that exposure to developmental trauma would be negatively associated with HDM and hippocampal volume and positively associated with intrusive memories among people with psychosis. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of studies published from Dec. 18, 2020, to Nov. 14, 2023, using the search terms "childhood," "trauma," "psychosis," and "memory process

Association Between Pre-existing Schizophrenia and Lung Cancer Outcomes: A TriNetX Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with schizophrenia and related disorders have shorter life expectancies than their peers. While cancer incidence rates are similar between patients with and without schizophrenia, few studies have investigated lung cancer mortality rates in patients with baseline schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD). This study compares all-cause lung cancer mortality rates between patients with and without SSD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We queried the TriNetX Network for patients with primary lung cancer. Two cohorts were constructed, reflecting a diagnosis of schizophrenia and related

[Cogitum in the treatment of mental disorders in childhood].

The development of many mental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism, is associated with early organic damage to the central nervous system. Moreover, even in severe cases of schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders, endogenous factors are the main cause of the disease, and organic lesions serve as triggers or aggravating circumstances. The drug Cogitum, a synthetic analog of N-acetylaspartate, is actively used in pediatric neuropsychiatry. This aspartic acid derivative, is critically important for brain development, hormonal regulation, and steroidogenesis. It is present in high co
