Gastric dysmotility has been reported in patients suffering from major depression or schizophrenia. An increased sympathetic activity modulating the gastric pacemaker located in the antrum of the stomach has been suggested as the underlying pathology. Similar to patients suffering from schizophrenia, their first-degree relatives showed alterations in cardiac autonomic modulation. Here we aimed to investigate gastric myoelectrical activity in healthy relatives of patients suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. Electrogastrography (EGG) was performed before and after test meal ingestion in 20 pa

This study investigated the possible association between three functional polymorphisms in the promoter region of the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) gene and schizophrenia, depression, and heroin addiction. Genomic DNA was isolated from the venous blood leukocytes of 322 unrelated patients with schizophrenia, 156 patients with depression, 300 patients with heroin addiction, and 300 healthy unrelated individuals. Polymorphisms in the promoter region of DRD4 (-120 bp duplication, -616C/G, and -521C/T) were genotyped using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction analysis. Genotype and allele were

Abstract Objective. The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of schizophrenia genetics by using efficient algorithmic examination techniques including dysmorphic examination, karyotyping, and Fluoresence in situ hybridization (FISH). Methods. In this study we have investigated 20 familial schizophrenia patients from Turkey who had an affected first-degree relative. Dysmorphic examination of the schizophrenia cases and their relatives have been performed. High resolution banding (HRB), specific centromeric, subtelomeric and 22q11.2 region FISH probes were used for genotyping

Schizophrenia is a multifactorial disease with changes affecting the immune system. Dysregulation of the cytokine network in schizophrenia has been well documented. Such changes may occur due to disturbances in cytokine levels that are linked to polymorphisms of cytokine genes. However, research in the role of cytokine gene polymorphisms in schizophrenia has been surprisingly scanty. The aim of this study was to identify, in a case control study, whether polymorphism of IFN-γ gene is a risk factor for the development of paranoid schizophrenia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first st

Research has provided strong evidence for oligodendrocyte and myelin-related genes dysfunction in schizophrenia. Several studies have suggested abnormalities in the expression of myelin-related genes including tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2) involved in the neurodegeneration and remyelination. In order to further assess the role of TNFR2 in schizophrenia, we examined a functional bi-allelic polymorphism associated with an impaired NF-KB signaling and cell survival. In the present case/control study, 220 patients with schizophrenia and 176 healthy controls were genotyped by RFLP-PCR fo

BACKGROUND: There has been a considerable amount of debate among the research community whether cannabis use may cause schizophrenia and whether cannabis use of patients with schizophrenia is associated with earlier and more frequent relapses. Considering that studies exploring patients' view on controversial topics have contributed to our understanding of important clinical issues, it is surprising how little these views have been explored to add to our understanding of the link between cannabis and psychosis. The present study was designed to elucidate whether patients with schizophrenia who

In schizophrenia, impairments of theory of mind (ToM) may be due to excessive ('overmentalizing') or defective ('undermentalizing') attribution of mental states. However, most ToM tests differentiate neither between 'overmentalizing' and 'undermentalizing' nor between cognitive and affective ToM in schizophrenia. This study aimed at differentiating these aspects of ToM in 80 patients diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and 80 matched healthy controls using the 'Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition' (MASC). Outcome parameters comprised 1) error counts representing 'undermentalizing' o

BACKGROUND: Studies on emotional biases towards threat-related stimuli in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have provided, so far, inconsistent results. The aim of the present study was to investigate emotional interference in acute schizophrenic and manic patients and its clinical correlates by using a card version of the Emotional Stroop Task designed with neutral, paranoid, depressive and manic words.
METHODS: Thirty paranoid schizophrenia patients, 30 manic patients and 60 healthy controls were compared on the Emotional Stroop Test. Response times (RT) were collected for each card. Inter

OBJECTIVES: This article tries to give an answer to the question of whether International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) persistent delusional disorder (PDD) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) delusional disorder (DD) is simply paranoid schizophrenia (PS). Because ICD-10 PDD and DSM-IV DD are identical, we use DD as a synonym.
METHODS: A prospective and longitudinal study compared all inpatients with DD treated at the Halle-Wittenberg university hospital during a 14-year period with a previously investigated selected cohort of patients with

Multiple sclerosis (MS) has both neurological and psychiatric manifestations. Though depression, bipolar disorder and la belle indifference are commonly described, schizophrenia-like-psychosis is not widely reported with MS. Drug interactions and side effects make treatment, in such scenario, challenging. We, for the first time, report a patient with MS and paranoid schizophrenia successfully treated with concurrent use of clozapine and risperidone with interferon-beta-1a.

The purpose of this study was to assess volumetric abnormalities of gray matter throughout the entire brain in patients with paranoid schizophrenia or with bipolar mania compared with control groups. We obtained weighted 3D T1 magnetic resonance images from 23 patients with paranoid schizophrenia, 24 patients with psychotic bipolar mania, and 36 healthy controls. Gray matter volume differences were assessed using optimized volumetric voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Both paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar mania group showed reduction of gray matter volume in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) (Br

The present study compares the occurrence of depressive symptoms evaluated by the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) in patients of Multiplex (MS) and Simplex Schizophrenia families (SS). The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to evaluate psychopathology. A total of 206 paranoid schizophrenia patients were studied according DSM-IV criteria. The Family Interview for Genetic Studies (FIGS) was used to study the families. A result in the FIGS for a positive family history of schizophrenia was referred as MS (patients); its lack as SS (patients). CDSS scores were

Therapeutic alliance is one of the predictors of a successful therapy. In the current case study of the 26 year old male student diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia we discuss the possible consequences of a short break in the therapeutic process on the treatment outcome. The client was appointed to an assistant psychologist for study support sessions and to work on his social skills and anxieties. The therapy continued regularly for a month and a half with some visible results in motivation, engagement and mood. After a break in the sessions due to the psychologist's absence, the client did

Paraphrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder similar to paranoid schizophrenia, but with a better-preserved affect and relation and a much less personality deterioration. It was firstly systematically described by Kraepelin in 1913 in order to define a group of psychotic patients who exhibited characteristic symptoms of dementia praecox, but with minimal disturbances of emotion and volition, and marked delusions. After the publication of the Mayer-Gross's report in 1921, the view to differentiate paraphrenia from schizophrenia was considered to be unfounded and the term "paraphrenia" was not in

We present the case of a woman with paranoid schizophrenia who was receiving oral risperidone. She developed neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) following the addition of depot fluphenazine for the treatment of refractory delusions. NMS subsided and psychotic features were controlled after both antipsychotics were discontinued and the patient was treated instead with olanzapine.

AIM: The aim of the paper was to present the basic data about delusions of sex change and body dysmorphic disorder and describe two cases of patients with these symptoms and paranoid schizophrenia.
METHOD: Analysis of the course of illness and medical documentation.
RESULTS: Coexisting of transsexualism and schizophrenia cause a lot of doubt. Moreover, delusions of sex change are probably more frequent than it is thought. It causes that in some cases the differential diagnosis of psychosis and gender identity disorders may be very difficult. Treatment of transsexuals is on one hand connected
