Two groups of schizophrenics with negative and positive syndromes were studied by registering cortical evoked potentials in response to acoustic stimuli of different meaning (odd-ball paradigm). Disfunction of selective attention is related to the impaired ability to differentiate relevant and irrelevant information. Disturbances of information selection were more pronounced in the patients with paranoid schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterized by a variety of cognitive dysfunctions. Information-processing dysfunctions differ between clinical subtypes such that nonparanoid schizophrenia patients attend less than paranoid schizophrenia patients to connotative or contextual aspects of stimuli. The positive and negative symptom dimensions are also associated with distinct cognitive deficits. In general, positive symptoms are related to auditory-processing deficits and negative symptoms to visual/motor dysfunctions. The interaction of frontal and septohippocampal brain systems, and failures of information-p

All schizophrenic patients admitted consecutively either to the Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Munich (group 1, N = 183) or the Mental State Hospital Haar/Munich (group 2, N = 447) between 1.8.1989 and 1.2.1990 were examined to assess prevalence estimates for substance abuse in schizophrenic inpatients. Psychiatric diagnosis were made according to ICD-9 criteria. Psychopathology and psychosocial variables were documented by means of the AMDP-protocol on admission and discharge. The diagnostic procedure included a detailed semi-structured interview concerning the individual alcohol a

A case is reported of a patient with autopsy-confirmed idiopathic Parkinson's disease in addition to chronic paranoid schizophrenia. Difficulties in the diagnosis and management of these two conditions are described. Because of the treatment implications, clinicians should be aware that idiopathic Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia can coexist.

The revealed variants dissimulation in 120 mental patients at initial stage of schizophrenia stimulated evaluation of premorbid personality changes and their significance in the formation of dissimulative tendencies. 63 patients showed reticence, 49--affective instability, 8--increased irritability and unmotivated mood changes. Comparative analysis of clinical variants of dissimulation with the aspects of personality permit to suggest their importance in formation of behaviour motives in the development of the schizophrenia process at the paranoia stage.

Research was conducted on a sample of 100 patients. The diagnosis was carefully verified according to the DSM-III. The "Syntonic" Scale and the "Autism" Scale, described in a separate paper were used. A literature review was performed with special attention to the fact that surprisingly rarely are references made to syntonia in research upon schizophrenic patients. The results are presented in table 1 and Figures 1 and 2. In all of the 100 subjects both factors studied were present though to varying degrees of severity. Both factors showed evident characteristics of selectivity. The numerical

A sample of 100 paranoidal schizophrenic patients were assessed. Scales of "vitality and the adequacy of emotion" and "emotional blunting" which are described in a separate paper were used. At the beginning attention was focused on the fact that several synonimous terms are used to describe the blunting of emotion (flatness of affect, blunted or inappropriate affect, presence of affect as opposed to flatness). The results indicate that in only a very few cases the intensity of both studied qualities was negligible, however in the majority of the cases it appeared that the quality of "vitality"

The study of mental representations on projective tests such as the Rorschach has made substantial contributions to our understanding of psychopathology. It is not clear, however, whether the representations of paranoid schizophrenics can be differentiated from those of normals and whether the Rorschach is the best test for such comparison. Object representations on the Rorschach and a role-playing (Johnson & Quinlan, 1980, 1985) test were studied in groups of normal (n = 31) and schizophrenic subjects (divided into paranoid [n = 16], intermediate [n = 11], and nonparanoid groups [n = 16]). The frequency of depression is extremely high in schizophrenia, about 60%. Depression much suffering, as evidenced by out patient suicides. As early as 1920, Mayer Gross, and more recently Widroe, identified this kind of depression under the name of post-psychotic depression. This definition deserves to be interpreted in several ways: depression differentiated negative symptoms; only the mood disorder is then characteristic and the other symptoms are part of the deficiency syndrome, depression can be integrated to schizophrenia or on the contrary it can be considered as independent of it and i

Patient aggression is a common problem on psychiatric units. Recent research has focused on the relationship between aggressive behavior and various patient characteristics, including psychopathology. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between diagnostic groups and particular types of patient aggression in a state psychiatric hospital. A secondary analysis was performed on existing data. There was no significant difference noted among DSM III diagnoses in total patient aggression. However, there was a significant difference between individuals with organic disorders and

Both magical thinking among healthy persons and magical and symbolic thinking in schizophrenia were discussed. The investigation covered 100 paranoid schizophrenics. They also underwent an examination in connection with the formation of the remaining 3 proportions. Both "realistic thinking and magical thinking" scales were used. An ability to think realistically was preserved, to a varying degree, in all patients, with 50% of those examined having shown an explicit or very explicit ability to follow realistic thinking. The above findings deviate from a simplified cognitive model within the dis

The relevant literature was reviewed, focusing on available evidence which emphasizes common occurrence of lack of insight among the sufferers of schizophrenia. The opinion has long been considered one-sided as it ignores occurrence of partial insight. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to attempt to find out to what extent the patient can afford to have insight and when he or she fails in doing so. A group of 100 paranoid schizophrenics were examined and both "insight and lack of insight" scales were applied. The results negate the hypothesis that insight does not take place in schiz

This paper recapitulates the research conducted in recent years, including the results of the first stage of research presented in 1988. The research is characterized by meticulous preparation of 8 scales which enables us to observe the formation of 4 fundamental proportions. Of vital importance for the interpretation of the results are correlations among the proportions and among scales. Explicit correlation (r = 0.69) between the syntonic-autistic proportion and that of "vitality and emotional adequacy--emotional dementia" was recorded. This observation is of great significance in isolating

Based on a review of the literature, the article deals with the major biological markers of schizophrenia. Recent developments in molecular biology have shown a possible association between schizophrenia and various HLA markers (A1, A2, A9, A10, A28, B27, BW16), and a linkage--in several families--between the disease and some polymorphisms of chromosome 5. On the other hand, chromosome X might also be involved. Neuropathological abnormalities have often been found in the brains of schizophrenics, such as cellular alterations in the basal ganglia and the limbic structures. Investigations by mea

The issue of specificity of delusions in schizophrenia is still a matter of debate. The authors analyze the delusion formation in schizophrenia from a prototypical, phenomenological point of view, focusing on the subject's experience. This perspective links delusion formation to the autistic predisposition, which is considered here as the elementary phenotypic expression of the vulnerability to schizophrenia. Autism is viewed as a defective preconceptual (i.e., before language) attunement to the world. It impedes the individual's sharing of "common sense" with others and impairs the ability to

Of 288 patients admitted to our psychogeriatric unit during a 4-year study, seven patients were diagnosed as having symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia (2.4% of all admissions). All the patients were women. Their symptoms included bizarre delusions and auditory hallucinations. Negative symptoms were rare. Attempts to reduce the dosage of neuroleptic medication led to reappearance of the symptoms in six patients and readmission of the seventh.
