Cognitive Reappraisal Impairments in Positive Emotion Regulation Among Internet Addicts: Reduced Effective Connectivity From dlPFC to vmPFC.

Internet addiction (IA) negatively impacts individuals' emotional regulation. However, previous studies have mostly focused on negative emotion regulation, neglecting the importance of regulating positive emotions. Internet addicts are more prone to emotional fluctuations following positive emotions, and elevated positive affect is a risk factor for mania and risky behaviors. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on the core deficits in positive emotion regulation among internet addicts, especially providing neural evidence to serve as targets for interventions. This study adopted a 2 (group: IA g

Comparing Computerized Adaptive Testing-Mental Health (CAT-MH) and Behavioral Health Measure-20 (BHM-20) screening measures in college mental health.

Objective: Mental health screening tools support the process for connecting individuals to appropriate care. Participants: This study compared two such tools, the BHM-20 and the CAT-MH, among first-year undergraduate and graduate students. Methods: Students completed the CAT-MH and, if referred to the counseling center, also took the BHM-20. We analyzed four domains: suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, and mania. Concordance between the tools was examined using intraclass correlations (ICCs) overall and across demographic subgroups. Results: Results showed poor agreement in most domains, w

UNIversity students' LIFEstyle behaviours and Mental health cohort (UNILIFE-M): study protocol of a multicentre, prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Students enrolling in higher education often adopt lifestyles linked to worse mental health, potentially contributing to the peak age onset of mental health problems in early adulthood. However, extensive research is limited by focusing on single lifestyle behaviours, including single time points, within limited cultural contexts, and focusing on a limited set of mental health symptoms. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The UNIversity students' LIFEstyle behaviours and Mental health cohort (UNILIFE-M) is a prospective worldwide cohort study aiming to investigate the associations between stu

Embryonic ploidy correction: an update on mechanisms and insights from mosaic embryo transfer.

Preimplantation human embryos frequently exhibit aneuploidy and chromosomal mosaicism, yet emerging evidence suggests they may possess mechanisms for ploidy correction that can mitigate these abnormalities. Several potential pathways have been proposed, including selective apoptosis of abnormal cells, cellular exclusion of aneuploid blastomeres, compartmentalization of abnormal cells into extraembryonic tissues, and chromosomal rescue events (such as trisomic or monosomic rescue), while in some embryos, no correction occurs, leading to persistence of aneuploid cell lineages. Follow-up studies

Safety and Efficacy of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors in Patients Who Use Psychoactive Substances: Potential Drug Interactions and Substance Use Disorder Treatment Data.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) remain an important option for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and other psychiatric conditions, despite potentially serious drug-drug interactions and associated dietary tyramine restrictions. However, they are rarely prescribed in patients with comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs) due to concerns about potential drug interactions and limited research in these populations. This narrative review investigates the use of MAOIs in patients who use psychoactive substances, exploring potential interactions while summarizing the relatively s

Understanding the interplay between alcohol use, cannabis use and mental health across the lifespan: A network analysis.

AIMS: This study aimed to understand the interplay between alcohol use, cannabis use and mental health across the lifespan by addressing the following questions: (1) Do the structure and overall connectivity of mental health symptom networks differ between individuals who use alcohol and those who co-use alcohol and cannabis?; (2) Within co-users, what is the strength of the associations between characteristics of alcohol and cannabis use (quantity/frequency, severity of use-related problems and age of onset) and mental health symptoms?; and (3) Does age moderate these associations among co-us

Acute mania and psychosis potentially triggered by St John's wort.

BACKGROUND: St John's wort (SJW) is widely used as an herbal supplement for depressive symptoms and is generally regarded as safe. However, although extremely rare, manic and psychotic reactions have been reported, typically in individuals taking high doses, using psychotropic agents, or having a psychiatric history. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a Japanese male in his early twenties with only one prior psychiatric visit for interpersonal stress, who developed acute manic and psychotic symptoms while taking standard doses of SJW. Shortly after returning to a university training progr

A Hypersexuality Subset Behavior Induced by Aripiprazole Overdose in an Antipsychotic Naïve Patient: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Background: Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that acts as a partial agonist on the dopamine receptor D2 while also displaying agonistic activity on the 5-HT1A and antagonistic activity on the 5-HT2A receptors. As a partial agonist, aripiprazole stabilizes the activity of the D2 receptor, preventing overactivation. Case presentation: Within our deprescribing activity, we came across the case of a 30-year-old antipsychotic-naïve patient treated with the depot formulation of aripiprazole for bipolar disorder and acute mania, possibly developing hypersexuality due to an overdose that impa

Comparing plasma levels and ratios of tryptophan, serotonin, kynurenine and quinolinic acid between patients with bipolar disorder and healthy controls: impact of depressive episode or post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental illness displaying recurrent episodes of impaired mood, in alternance with euthymic or subsyndromal periods. The comorbidity between BD and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is attracting attention due to its frequency, diagnostic difficulties, and worsening prognosis. Consequently, identifying molecular substrates of post-traumatic vs. depressive symptoms in BD would provide much benefit for patients' rescue. This study thus focused on tryptophan (TRP) metabolism, at the crossroad between neurotransmission, immunity and inflammation, u

Blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses in managing vision-related symptoms: an updated review.

Blue light, emitted by natural and artificial sources such as digital screens, has raised concerns regarding its impact on ocular health, visual comfort, and circadian rhythms. Prolonged exposure has been linked to digital eye strain (DES), visual fatigue, potential retinal damage, and sleep disturbances. Blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses have been developed to mitigate these effects by reducing short-wavelength blue light transmission, but their efficacy remains debated. Studies indicate that these lenses have minimal or no significant impact on contrast sensitivity, color discrimination,

How Many Criteria Should Be Required to Define the DSM-5 Mixed Features Specifier in Depressed Patients?

Background: During the past 2 decades, there has been intense interest in the clinical significance of the concurrence of manic symptoms in depressed patients. DSM-5 introduced a mixed features specifier for both bipolar depression and major depressive disorder. Studies of the DSM-5 mixed features specifier have generally found a low prevalence of mixed depression. One approach toward increasing the sensitivity of the DSM-5 mixed features criteria is to lower the classification threshold. In the present study, we examine the impact of lowering the DSM-5 diagnostic threshold from 3 to 2 criteri

Remote Measurement-Based Care Interventions for Mental Health: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Poor management of mental health conditions leads to reduced adherence to treatment, prolonged illness, unnecessary rehospitalization, and a significant financial burden to the health care system. Recognizing this, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and remote measurement-based care (RMBC) interventions have emerged as promising strategies to address gaps in current care systems. They provide a convenient means to continuously monitor patient-reported outcomes, thereby informing clinical decision-making and potentially improving outcomes such as psychopathology, relapse, and qua

Isolating the Genetic Component of Mania in Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder typically features episodes of mania and depression, frequently accompanied by psychosis. While progress has been made in understanding the genetics of depression and psychosis, mania remains underexplored, limiting opportunities for targeted interventions and a fuller understanding of bipolar disorder's heterogeneity. METHODS: We used genomic structural equation modeling to subtract the genetic effects of major depressive disorder (MDD) from bipolar disorder, allowing us to isolate a genetic component specific to mania. This approach used genome-wide association

Pitolisant-associated mania - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder treated with medications that promote wakefulness. Pitolisant, a histamine H3 receptor inverse agonist, is used to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness. Although pitolisant clinical trials describe mainly mild adverse effects, severe psychiatric reactions have been reported, yet detailed clinical descriptions remain limited. This case describes a first-onset manic episode with psychotic features shortly after pitolisant initiation in an adult without any psychiatric history, highlighting a rare but clinically significant potential reacti

Effectiveness of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics Versus Oral Antipsychotics in People With Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies: Efficacité des antipsychotiques injectables à action prolongée par rapport aux antipsychotiques oraux chez les personnes atteintes de troubles bipolaires : revue systématique et méta-analyse d'études observationnelles.

BACKGROUND: Randomised trials suggest long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) may outperform oral antipsychotics (OAPs) regarding adherence and relapse prevention in bipolar disorder (BD). We aimed to compare the effectiveness and tolerability of LAIs versus OAPs in observational studies. METHODS: Searching MEDLINE/Embase/PsycINFO until March-25-2025, we conducted a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis (pre-registered protocol: https://osf.io/gkwrp) of observational studies comparing LAIs versus OAPs in people with BD (primary outcome = study-defined relapse/psychiatric hos

Sustainable fabrication and structure-property evaluation of chitosan-based functional membranes prepared via a CO₂-assisted process.

Emerging sustainability challenges and the need to minimise hazardous chemicals in membrane fabrication have driven the exploration of bio-based alternatives to fluorinated polymers. In this study, thin chitosan-based membranes were fabricated via a green CO₂-assisted dissolution method that eliminates the use of mineral and organic acids and integrates carbon capture directly into the fabrication process. Low-, medium-, and high-molecular-weight chitosans were investigated, both in their native form and with glycerol plasticisation, to assess their structural, sorptive, mechanical, and ion-ca

Classification and discrimination of emotion dysregulation disorders using machine learning.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD), bipolar (BD) and borderline personality (BPD) disorders are severe psychiatric illnesses often presenting with overlapping emotion dysregulation symptoms. To date, it is unknown whether these disorders share a continuum on emotion dysregulation. To address this, we employed machine learning (ML) algorithms on psychological and environmental features from 232 adults to predict and discriminate these disorders. We recruited 92 patients diagnosed with either ADHD, BD, or BPD. Considering heritability, we recruited 67 genetically unrelated ADHD, BD and BPD o
