Generalized Social Phobia and social judgments: the salience of self- and partner-information.

Individuals with Generalized Social Phobia (GSP, N = 25) and community controls (N = 26) participated in a social interaction task. They then rated how well they had performed in the situation and assigned weights and valences to the different types of information they used to arrive at this judgment. The GSP group weighed anxiety-related self-information more heavily than did the Control group. In contrast, their conversational partners weighed verbal behavior more heavily. These findings are generally supportive of cognitive models of social phobia and point to the negative interpersonal imp

Framing social information and generalized social phobia.

Patients with generalized social phobia (GSP, N = 33) and matched community controls (N = 31) engaged in a social interaction that was constructed to go well, and then received feedback that framed social cues reflecting either the absence of negative outcomes or the presence of positive outcomes. Following feedback that framed positive social cues, the GSP group predicted they would experience more anxiety in a subsequent interaction than did non-phobic controls. In contrast, following feedback framing the absence of negative outcomes, the GSP group did not differ from controls in their anxie

Psychological effect of the oral contraceptive formulation containing 3 mg of drospirenone plus 30 microg of ethinyl estradiol.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate in healthy eumenorrheic young women whether an oral contraceptive (OC) containing drospirenone (DRSP) (3 mg) + ethinyl estradiol (EE) (30 microg) (DRSP + EE) could modify psychological symptoms and whether it could modify steroids interfering with the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A receptors. DESIGN: Clinical study of treated subjects and nontreated controls. SETTING: Healthy volunteers in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cagliari University. PATIENT(S): Control group (n = 12) and OC group (n = 10) women with similar age, body mass index, and main o

Pre-existing antidepressants and the outcome of group cognitive behaviour therapy for social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: This is a naturalistic treatment outcome study investigating the impact of pre-existing antidepressant use on the effectiveness of group cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for social phobia. METHOD: Of the 133 participants who completed the CBT program, 49 reported taking antidepressants (CBT + AD group), while 84 reported not taking antidepressants (CBT group). The treatment program involves 40 h of structured, group-based CBT over 7 weeks. The dependent measures included the Social Phobia Scale and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Depres

Psychosocial factors are linked to functional gastrointestinal disorders: a population based nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted based on volunteer studies that levels of psychological distress are similar in those with functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and health in the community, while increased psychological distress in outpatients is largely explained by health-care seeking. AIMS: To determine if psychological distress, life event stress, or social support is associated with functional GI disorders in a population-based study. METHODS: A nested case-control study was performed by first mailing a self-report bowel disease questionnaire to a random sample of Olmsted County,

Predicting depression, social phobia, and violence in early adulthood from childhood behavior problems.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined childhood behavior problems at ages 10 and 11 years as predictors of young adult depression, social phobia, and violence at age 21 years. METHOD: Data were collected as part of the Seattle Social Development Project, a longitudinal study of 808 elementary school students from high-crime neighborhoods of Seattle. Reports of childhood behavior problems were obtained from parents and children in fall 1985 and from teachers in spring 1986. Follow-up reports of violence and DSM-III-R depression and social phobia were collected from 765 respondents using standard surv

Sociotropy-autonomy and situation-specific anxiety.

Sociotropy and autonomy are conceptualized as two personality dimensions that relate to individuals' vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Sociotropy is characterized as an excessive investment in interpersonal relationships, and autonomy is characterized as an excessive concern with independence as well as a lack of concern for others. The present study investigated the relationships between sociotropy-autonomy and trait anxiety associated with four types of situations, i.e., Social Evaluation, Physical Danger, Ambiguous Situation, and Daily Routine. 255 undergraduate students completed th

Group-based interpersonal psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder: theoretical and clinical aspects.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that engenders both symptomatic distress and severe disruption in interpersonal and social functioning. Most of the empirical research on treatment has emphasized interventions that aim to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD, despite the persisting impairments in social, occupational, and interpersonal functioning. In clinical practice, achieving relief from symptoms such as irritability or phobic avoidance is a worthwhile goal, yet significant distress and disability derived from disruptions to interpersonal attachments, social networks, and conf

Existential analysis and psychoanalysis: specific differences and personal relationship between Ludwig Binswanger and Sigmund Freud.

The concise curriculum vitae of the founder of existential analysis is followed by an exact comparison of the polarity (homo natura versus homo cultura) between Binswanger and Freud. Then the five stages in the development of (Existential Daseinsanalysis Analysis) are described: the stage of learning, of practice, of criticism, of the alternative to psychoanalysis, and of reconciliation. The criticism is aimed especially at Freud's naturalism and at the concept of drive. These concepts are opposed by ontoanalytic doctrines derived from Heidegger's ontoanalysis. The differences are further exem

A magnetic resonance imaging study of cortical thickness in animal phobia.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of specific phobia (SP), its neural substrates remain undetermined. Although an initial series of functional neuroimaging studies have implicated paralimbic and sensory cortical regions in the pathophysiology of SP, to date contemporary morphometric neuroimaging methods have not been applied to test specific hypotheses regarding structural abnormalities. METHODS: Morphometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods were used to measure regional cortical thickness in 10 subjects with SP (animal type) and 20 healthy comparison (HC) subjects. The path from initial inquiry to initiation of treatment for social anxiety disorder in an anxiety disorders specialty clinic.

Efficacious treatments for social anxiety disorder have become increasingly available, with approximately three-quarters of treatment completers showing significant improvement [Arch. Gen. Psychiatry 55 (1998) 1133.]. However, very few individuals with social anxiety disorder access these services. The present study reports on the path to initiation of treatment for social anxiety disorder among individuals contacting an anxiety disorder specialty clinic. Of 395 initial telephone inquiries, only 60 individuals (15%) started treatment. Three "critical points" associated with high pretreatment a

Characterization of event related potentials using information theoretic distance measures.

Analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) using signal processing tools has become extremely widespread in recent years. Nonstationary signal processing tools such as wavelets and time-frequency distributions have proven to be especially effective in characterizing the transient phenomena encountered in event-related potentials. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of event-related potentials collected during a psychological experiment where two groups of subjects, spider phobics and snake phobics, are shown the same set of stimulus: A blank stimulus, a neutral stimulus and a spider stimu

Assessment and treatment of socially phobic children: a cross cultural comparison.

In this study we examined the psychopathology and behavioral treatment of White and African American preadolescent children with social phobia. The comprehensive assessment strategy, including semistructured diagnostic interviews, clinician ratings of impairment, behavioral observations, parental ratings, and self-report inventories, did not reveal differences in symptomatic presentation between African American and White children. Whereas all children improved from pre- to posttreatment, there were no significant differences based on race. The results are discussed in terms of the applicabili

Knowledge of social anxiety disorder relative to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among educational professionals.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), the 3rd most common psychiatric disorder in the United States, follows a chronic and unremitting course, often resulting in severe impairments in multiple areas of functioning. Despite a typical age of onset in early adolescence, the disorder is rarely recognized and treated in adolescent populations. Given its early age of onset, school professionals are arguably in the best position to detect symptoms of SAD and to provide appropriate referrals for assessment and intervention. This study examined the knowledge that teachers, school counselors, and school psycho

The Multi-Center Dilemma Project: an investigation on the role of cognitive conflicts in health.

The Multi-Center Dilemma Project is a collaborative research endeavour aimed at determining the role of dilemmas--a kind of cognitive conflict, detected by using an adaptation of Kelly's Repertory Grid Technique--in a variety of clinical conditions. Implicative dilemmas appear in one third of the non-clinical group (n = 321) and in about half of the clinical group (n = 286), the latter having a proportion of dilemmas that doubles that of the non-clinical sample. Within the clinical group, we studied 87 subjects, after completing a psychotherapy process, and found that therapy helps to dissolve

A brief group cognitive-behavioral intervention for social phobia in childhood.

Twenty-three preadolescent children (ages 8-11) meeting criteria for social phobia were randomly assigned to either a 3-week cognitive-behavioral group intervention or a wait-list control group. The intervention consisted of psychoeducation, cognitive strategies, and behavioral exposure. Outcome measures included diagnostic interview as well as parent and child report measures of anxiety and depression. Improvements were observed at posttest, with results stronger for parent report and interviewer ratings than for child self-report. At 3-week follow-up, children receiving the intervention demo

How much do sample characteristics affect the effect size? An investigation of studies testing the treatment effects for social phobia.

In spite of the success of cognitive behavioral therapy for social phobia in research studies, it remains unclear whether interventions will remain successful in the routine of clinical practice, where patients might differ from those in research samples. This study investigates the possibility that higher effect sizes are achieved under typical research conditions. Thirty studies testing treatment effects for social phobia are re-examined by categorizing them according to the quality and amount of applied sample restriction and laboratory study characteristics. The results indicate that even
