Medical student syndrome: a bayesian reasoning failure.

BACKGROUND: Medical Student Syndrome (MSS) is often understood as a manifestation of illness anxiety disorder where medical students misinterpret benign symptoms as signs of a serious illness. Current explanations rely heavily on psychological factors; however, these fail to capture the systemic reasoning errors that underly MSS. This paper proposes a mixed model: that MSS results from a combination of the Bayesian reasoning failure of base rate neglect and psychological stressors. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study of medical students was conducted [Formula: see text]. Participan

Minocycline attenuates panicogenic responses in a CO2-induced panic attack model: a translational approach.

There is a connection between neuroinflammation and panic attacks (PA), as microglia-driven pro-inflammatory responses help detect homeostatic disturbances like CO₂ inhalation. This model has become widely used in research since CO₂ exposure can trigger PA in humans and panic-related behavior in mice. Minocycline inhibits microglia activation, serving as a promising tool to attenuate CO2-induced PA. The locus coeruleus (LC) is a CO₂/pH-sensitive region, and disruptions in its activity are linked to psychiatric conditions such as panic disorder (PD). We investigated the involvement of microglia

Racialized Health Care Dynamics in Time-Limited Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Case of a Patient Awaiting Heart Transplantation.

Racial inequities within both heart transplantation and psychotherapy access have been well documented. In this report, we describe the case of a patient from a racially/ethnically minoritized background awaiting heart transplantation for whom panic attacks significantly impacted his quality of life and presented a barrier to transplantation. This case illustrates the novel utilization of time-limited psychodynamic psychotherapy exploring racialized health care dynamics as a precipitant to psychological symptoms. We highlight how racialized treatment experiences can contribute to symptoms of p

Altered autonomic stress reactivity and recovery in panic disorder during the Trier Social Stress Test.

Altered autonomic stress reactivity and recovery have been linked to reduced self-regulation and adverse health outcomes. Based on the autonomic flexibility-neurovisceral integration model, panic disorder (PD) may be associated with dysregulated autonomic control and reduced physiological flexibility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare heart rate (HR), the time-domain heart rate variability parameters SDNN and RMSSD, in individuals with PD and healthy controls during psychosocial stress induction. Thirty individuals with PD and thirty age- and gender-matched healthy controls under

Dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome - what do we really know?

INTRODUCTION: Dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome (DAWS) comprises a wide range of neuropsychiatric and autonomic symptoms that occur in temporal relation with the reduction or withdrawal of dopamine agonists (DAs) in a dose-dependent manner. This syndrome was described as an important complication in Parkinson's disease (PD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) treatment. STATE OF THE ART: Dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome affects even up to 24% of PD patients treated with DAs in whom the medication was tapered. Predominant symptoms include the following: anxiety, depression, irritability, p

Anxious Depressive Attack (ADA) -its prevalence and clinical implication.

BACKGROUND: Anxious-Depressive Attack (ADA) is one of the three types of anxiety attacks originally described by Freud. ADA is characterized by the sudden onset of intense anxiety, immediately followed by intrusive ruminations. These intrusive thoughts, often centered on past regrets or future worries, cause significant psychological distress. Some individuals respond to these episodes with maladaptive or impulsive coping behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of ADA among new patients at an anxiety disorder specialty clinic and to examine the associated psychiatric and psyc

Living with breathing pattern disorder: a scoping review.

A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework to develop a comprehensive overview of how the experience of breathing pattern disorder (BPD) has been conceptualized and reported in the literature. The Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Embase, Medline and PsycINFO electronic databases were searched from the earliest available reports until 13th May 2025. The reference lists of included reports were also screened for appropriate literature. Only reports relating to adults and published i

The pharmacological rationale for amiloride nasal spray: potentially a portable and rapid-acting treatment for panic disorder.

Panic disorder is among the most common mental disorders, characterised by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks that are highly distressing and further lead to pervasive anxiety about future attacks and maladaptive behavioural changes. Existing pharmacological and psychological treatments often fail to produce lasting improvement, and relapse is common. Neither antidepressants, the current first-line drug treatments, nor benzodiazepines exert their actions sufficiently rapidly to head off panic attacks between the initial indications of panic symptoms and the fully developed panic attack. There

Determination of Psychological Comorbidities in Children With Acute Recurrent or Chronic Pancreatitis Referred for Total Pancreatectomy With Islet Autotransplantation Evaluation: A Single-Center Study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple psychological factors and related comorbidities affect children with chronic pancreatitis (CP) or acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP). We aimed to describe the frequency of psychological symptoms/diagnoses in children with CP/ARP and predict the severity of the disease burden based on these factors. METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients aged 5 years or younger with a prior history of CP/ARP who were evaluated by a pediatric psychologist as part of their evaluation for total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) at a single center. [Understanding dental anxiety better: an overview of possible causes].

Anxious behaviour in the oral healthcare is often called as dental anxiety or dental phobia . However, the terminology is more nuanced and such behaviour could also be a symptom of other anxiety problems. These might include anxiety disorders, such as a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder or panic disorder. But it may also involve other psychological disorders with pronounced anxiety characteristics, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and illness anxiety disorder. Finally, anxious behaviour can also stem from certain personality disorders (avoidant, depe

Group metacognitive therapy for students with anxiety: an uncontrolled pre-post study of feasibility and associated outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Group-based Metacognitive Therapy (gMCT) has shown promising results for anxiety, but research specifically targeting student populations is limited. By addressing maladaptive metacognitions, gMCT aims to reduce core symptoms such as anxiety, excessive worry, and rumination. More research is needed in university settings to determine whether gMCT can be successfully applied to students. Method: We investigated the feasibility and examined a gMCT treatment course with an uncontrolled pre-post design with a 3-month booster follow-up. The design reflects the available data material an

Shame and loneliness in social anxiety disorder: A comparison with panic disorder.

Shame and loneliness are two important emotions that have been suggested to play a maintaining role in social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, it is not clear whether emotional processes involving these emotions are predominantly experienced in SAD or shared with other anxiety disorders. In the present study we examined the temporal relationship between shame and loneliness on one hand and anxiety on the other among individuals with SAD and among individuals with panic disorder (PD). We used a daily diary design in which participants reported their emotional experiences every evening for 21 co

Adverse childhood experiences and mental health outcomes among women in sex work and social care: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for mental disorders, yet their impact within vulnerable occupational groups remains insufficiently understood. Women engaged in sex work and social care are disproportionately exposed to violence and emotional stressors, potentially compounding the effects of early-life adversity. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study in Berlin, Germany, including 560 women (403 engaged in sex work, 157 in social care). Childhood adversity was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), and current psyc
