Integrated Decentering: Validating an Automated Measure of Decentering Expression Across Seven Independent Samples.

Objectives. Decentering---relating to one's thoughts and emotions as passing mental events rather than being fused with them---is difficult to measure at scale. We test whether Integrated Decentering (ID), an automated measure of the decentering expressed in short reflective text, shows construct validity as one fixed scoring model. Methods. A purpose-trained language-model ensemble scored texts from seven independent samples (self-report, community, essay, diary, and online-argument samples, and two contemplative-practice cohorts). One cohort was a post-hoc secondary analysis of a registered

Randomized controlled trial of emotion regulation therapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy to address distress in cancer caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) shows promise for addressing distress in cancer caregivers, though results are mixed. Traditional CBT may not fully address transdiagnostic processes underlying caregiver distress, such as attentional rigidity and perseverative thinking. Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT), a contemporary CBT targeting these mechanisms, has promise for cancer caregivers (ERT-C). We compared ERT-C to caregiver-adapted CBT (CBT-C) on caregiver- and patient-reported outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a multisite RCT (ERT-C vs. CBT-C) with distressed caregivers of patients

Neurophysiological Correlates of Pain-Related Cognitive-Affective Dysregulation in Adolescent Depression.

Adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by altered processing and regulation of negative emotional and bodily experiences. Pain lies at the interface of sensory and cognitive-affective processing, encompassing both perceptual sensitivity and appraisal of pain-related experiences. Yet, how pain catastrophizing, a pain-specific cognitive-affective pattern characterized by rumination, magnification, and helplessness, relates to depressive severity and neurophysiological dynamics during adolescence remains poorly understood. In this cross-sectional case-control study, we recrui

Work and depression during emerging adulthood: Longitudinal associations of general and phase specific factors with depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is highly prevalent among emerging adults (ages 18-29), a developmental phase marked by identity exploration, instability, and major life transitions. Despite evidence linking work conditions to mental health, the role of work-related factors in depression during emerging adulthood has received limited longitudinal attention. METHODS: The present study investigated risk and protective factors associated with depressive symptoms at the end of a three-year longitudinal study, with a particular focus on work-related experiences. At baseline, 1209 participants (M = 23.77

Positive reappraisal and refocus on planning as cognitive emotion-regulation correlates of psychological resilience: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive emotion regulation may play an important role in psychological resilience; however, its association with resilience may be influenced by various factors, including cognitive ability and psychiatric symptoms. We examined whether specific cognitive emotion-regulation strategies remained associated with resilience after accounting for these factors. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 149 healthy young adults. Psychological resilience and cognitive emotion-regulation strategies were assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionna

Differential effects of forest environmental perception on psychological well-being: the moderating role of perceived stress in national parks.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid urbanization and exposure to unnatural environments has helped to escalate global mental health problems. Interventions involving forests have been demonstrated to be therapeutic, but current studies are mostly concerned with direct effects, not taking into consideration environmental perception and individual differences. Specifically, the moderating effects of stress in determining the psychological well-being benefits of forest settings are not well studied. This study therefore examined whether perceived stress moderates the association between forest environmental

Repetitive negative thinking is associated with conflict-related neural activity that modulates evidence accumulation.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT), including worry and rumination, is a transdiagnostic feature of anxiety and depressive disorders and is linked to altered cognitive control. However, the decision-level mechanisms underlying these alterations are not well understood. Here, we examined whether individual variation in RNT is associated with neural and computational markers of conflict processing. Thirty-seven participants completed a flanker task while undergoing electroencephalography, and inhibitory control dynamics were quantified using hierarchical drift diffusion modeling. The Relationship Between Cognitive Processes, Self-Stigma, and Internalizing Psychopathology in Individuals with Sexual Interests in Minors.

Individuals with sexual interests in minors are subject to significant stigma in society, even in the absence of any criminal behavior, which can profoundly affect their psychological well-being. This stigma can contribute to the development of internalizing psychopathology (e.g., anxiety, depression, and stress), which is also recognized as a dynamic risk factor for child sexual abuse. This cross-sectional questionnaire study (N = 90) aimed to examine the psychological distress experienced by this population. Specifically, we: (1) investigated the occurrence of internalizing complaints among

Cognitive appraisal processes mediate postinjury pain and disability: A longitudinal observational study.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Psychological appraisal processes of pain catastrophizing (PC) and perceived injustice (PI) are involved in the transition to postinjury disability. Although these factors are modifiable and may serve as ideal intervention targets to improve recovery, they have not been examined as mediators between acute pain and postinjury disability. The present study utilized longitudinal mediation to examine acute PC and PI as mechanisms by which acute pain contributes to 90-day disability in adults after a motor vehicle crash. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: This study represents secondary da

Development and evaluation of mitochondria-targeted caseinolytic protease (ClpP) agonist chemical probes in in vitro breast cancer models.

The link between psychological strain and suicidal ideation is well embedded in literature, however, the underlying mechanism is rarely explored. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between psychological strain, suicidal ideation, rumination, and depression among Pakistani young adults during the Covid-19 outbreak. In addition, it will also try to determine the mediating role of ruminative subtypes and depression in the relationship between psychological strain and suicidal ideation. The sample consists of 400 university students (83 males and 289 females) with the age rang

Clinical Phenotypes and Neurobiology of Youth With Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) Across Sex.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by persistent avoidant/restrictive eating unrelated to body image. Sex differences in clinical phenotypes and neurobiology of ARFID are understudied. We hypothesized that females with ARFID would have a greater frequency of the lack of interest and fear of aversive consequences phenotypes, higher levels of anorexigenic hormones, and greater fMRI activation in brain regions associated with cognitive control during a food cue paradigm. We further hypothesized that males with ARFID would have a greate

Relationship Between Second Victim Distress, Resilience, Deliberate Rumination and Compassion Fatigue Among ICU Nurses: A Moderated Mediation Model.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety is a critical global health issue. ICU nurses, burdened by heavy workloads and psychological stress, are particularly vulnerable to second victim syndrome following adverse events. This can diminish their sensitivity to patient harm and emotional engagement, potentially resulting in compassion fatigue. Deliberate rumination and resilience may serve as protective factors in this process. AIM: This study investigates the relationships among second victim distress, deliberate rumination and compassion fatigue in ICU nurses and examines resilience as a moderating factor

Could Partner Responsiveness be Involved in the Unforgiveness Process Following a Relational Transgression?

Unforgiveness is a potential response following a relational transgression in couple relationships, manifesting in cognitive-evaluative, emotional-ruminative, and offender reconstrual dimensions. The type and degree of unforgiveness experienced after a relational transgression could be influenced by interpersonal variables such as perceived partner responsiveness. However, the link between perceived partner responsiveness and unforgiveness has not been examined. This study aimed to investigate this link to better understand the factors that might hinder unforgiveness after relational transgres

Emotion Regulation and Aggression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Research on emotion regulation (ER) and aggression has increased rapidly in the past years, but heterogeneity across studies make integration of findings challenging. To estimate the size and consistency of the relationship between ER and aggression we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. In total, 16,369 articles were retrieved from Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, and 137 articles (171 studies) provided 918 effect sizes from a total sample of N = 252,605. Multilevel models showed significant pooled relationships, with small-to-moderate effects. Use of adaptive strategies was

Exploring the mediating role of rumination on empathy and secondary traumatic stress in nurses: a cross-sectional investigation.

PURPOSES: Secondary traumatic stress (STS) poses a substantial concern within nursing, affecting nurses' well-being and clinical care quality. While empathy, rumination, and STS are connected, research on their interplay among nurses is limited. The current study investigates how intrusive and purposive rumination mediates the link between empathy and STS in nursing professionals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey involving 784 nurses from China was undertaken using convenience sampling. Data collection involved three scales: the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, Event-Related Ru
