CONTEXT: Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been ravaged by the violence of armed terrorist groups (JNIM, EIGS), resulting in over 2 million internally displaced persons. In the Boucle du Mouhoun region, 63.17% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are women (84,649 out of 133,994 in 2023). As prime targets of armed conflict, they suffer multifaceted violence used as a weapon of psychological warfare against communities.
METHODS: The study uses a convergent mixed-methods design conducted in October 2023 in the commune of Dédougou. The total sample size is 1,056 participants, including 1,015 IDPs s

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is recommended for rhythm control in selected patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF). Coronary artery spasm (CAS) is a rare but recognized complication of AF ablation and may result in life-threatening arrhythmias.
CASE SUMMARY: A 47-year-old man underwent cryoballoon PVI for symptomatic paroxysmal AF. Transient inferior ST-segment elevation occurred following left-sided PVI and resolved spontaneously. Shortly after completion of the procedure, recurrent ST-segment elevation developed, progressed to malignant ventricular arrhythmia and ca

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder frequently co-occurring with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and insomnia, particularly in veterans, and safer nonpharmacological therapies are needed. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation, also referred to as cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES), may help with anxiety and sleep, but its effect on pain is unclear. This feasibility study evaluated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify neural correlates of pain and treatment response for CES effects on fibromyalgia pain in veterans.
METHODS: In a randomized

BACKGROUND: Combat-related traumatic injury (CRTI) can increase sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, with poor mental health possibly worsening this effect. Increased SNS activity is associated with CVD risk. We examined the ADVANCE cohort to assess whether the effect of mental health on sympathetic activity differs in injured servicemen with and without associated limb loss and a frequency-matched uninjured group.
METHODS: The primary outcome was the SNS index (SNSi) measured via a single-lead 5-min electrocardiogram recording and analysed in Kubios software. The exposure variables wer

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Previous studies have shown an association between social cognition (emotion recognition, social perception, attributional style, and mentalization) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but there have been no longitudinal studies on this topic. We hypothesize that childhood social cognitive differences are associated with subsequent trauma exposure and PTSD.
STUDY DESIGN: Data from the Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used. The Social Communications Disorder Checklist (SCDC) at age 7.5 years, the Diagnostic Analysis of Non-Verbal Accura

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with impairments in cognitive function, including working memory, and may involve altered glutamatergic regulation in the prefrontal cortex. In this study, we used 7T functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (fMRS) to examine dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) glutamate during working memory in individuals with PTSD, trauma exposure without PTSD (TE), and no trauma exposure (NT). Eighty participants (27 PTSD, 27 TE, 26 NT) underwent baseline MRS followed by fMRS during a letter n-back task. A linear mixed-effects model was used to

Caregivers of patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) often experience psychological distress, yet trauma-related responses remain underexplored. Post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), characterized by confusion and behavioural disturbances, may represent a particularly stressful experience for family members. This study examined the impact of PTA on post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), anxiety, and depression in caregivers of patients with ABI. In this cross-sectional observational study, 76 caregivers of patients with moderate-to-severe ABI were divided into three groups based on patients' PTA st

INTRODUCTION: Moral injury (MI), defined as perceived betrayals or violations of one's moral values, causes psychological distress in active-duty soldiers (ADS), and it is associated with various mental health (MH) issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Although some quantitative reviews have examined the association between MI and MH outcomes in the military population, primarily among veterans, none of the studies focused specifically on ADS. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to address the research gap.
METHODS: We reviewed publ

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops when acute threat responses fail to resolve, resulting in persistent anxiety, avoidance, and hyperarousal. However, the specific neural circuits and molecular mechanisms governing the transition from acute stress to enduring pathology remain incompletely understood. Objectives This study aimed to determine whether endocannabinoid (eCB) signaling within posterior basolateral amygdala (pBLA) to oval bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (ovBNST) projections constrains the maladaptive transition from social threat to PTSD-like anxiety and

Latinx patients possess a rich cultural background and shared heritage; they also possess culturally distinct medical beliefs and practices, including beliefs around mental health and interactions with mental health systems. Most forms of psychotherapy were not developed for Latinx populations, and the efficacy of existing and novel forms of psychotherapy in Latinx patients as a group has received precious little study. In this study, we review psychotherapy and telepsychotherapy interventions for Latinx patients with mental health disorders. We conducted a literature review applying Preferred

Chronic interpersonal trauma can lead to complex clinical presentations characterized by dissociation, somatic symptoms, and disturbances in self-organization, particularly when psychosocial stressors remain active. This case report describes a 32-year-old female with prolonged interpersonal trauma who presented with dissociative episodes, somatic symptoms including fainting and jaw locking, recurrent suicidal ideation, and significant functional impairment. Symptoms intensified amid ongoing interpersonal conflict and financial stress. Assessment findings supported a diagnosis of complex post

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a leading cause of injury among women, especially during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Experiencing IPV increases the risk of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD during the perinatal period is associated with poorer maternal mental health and adverse early child outcomes. Heartbeats (HB) is a hospital-based, community-linked violence intervention program designed to reduce morbidity and mortality among perinatal and postnatal survivors of IPV. HB provides crisis intervention, intensive case ma

INTRODUCTION: Effective burn pain management is profoundly influenced by cultural contexts, and the complexity of this context is intensified by migration. However, the limited understanding of the relationship between culture and pain is an important barrier to delivering high-quality, person-centred care. Achieving a deeper understanding of this phenomenon is essential for developing effective care plans. This approach can mitigate long-term consequences such as post-traumatic stress disorder and ultimately improve the quality of life for burn survivors, moving beyond purely physiological tr
