A mixed-methods study of mental health and trauma among women in the sex work industry in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The sexual commerce industry significantly impacts the psychological health of prostituted women. This study examines mental health damages and complex trauma in 12 women exposed to this commerce. The goal of this work was to evaluate the mental health damage and trauma-related symptoms of these women at the beginning of an intervention. METHODS: A mixed methodology was used. Quantitatively, four measures were administered to assess subjective distress, the depression-anxiety-stress triad, post-traumatic stress disorder, and cumulative trauma in everyday life. For qualitative anal

Universal suicide risk assessment for veterans and soldiers in all healthcare settings: A nursing imperative.

PURPOSE: Suicide remains a major public health concern among U.S. veterans and active-duty military personnel. This narrative review examines evidence supporting routine suicide risk screening and considers its implementation as a clinically appropriate, trauma-informed process rather than an inflexible requirement at every encounter. METHODS: A structured narrative review used targeted searches of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus, supplemented by federal surveillance reports, clinical guidance, and policy documents. Evidence was synthesized across five domains: suicide prevalence and tre

Emerging Patterns of Mental Health Comorbidities Among Those With Blast or Blunt Mechanism TBI: Leveraging Total Brain Diagnostics Data.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with postinjury mental health (MH) sequelae, yet associations between injury-related risk factors (eg, injury mechanism, multiple injuries) and outcomes remain poorly understood. We leveraged a newly harmonized national dataset to evaluate relationships between TBI characteristics and MH outcomes. DATA SOURCES: We analyzed data from the Total Brain Diagnostics (TBD) dataset, a harmonized data source including 2 large, multisite, longitudinal prospective cohort studies: the Long-term Impact of Military-relevant Brain Injury Consortium's (LI

The impact of amputation on psychiatric outcomes after burn injury.

BACKGROUND: Amputation after burn injury is linked to psychiatric burden, but prior studies are small with short follow-up. METHODS: TriNetX was queried for adults with burn injury between 30 August 2005 and 1 January 2023. Amputees and non-amputees were 1:1 propensity-score matched on demographics, comorbidities, substance use, psychiatric history, antidepressant use, and burn extent. New-onset outcomes were assessed at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years with Benjamini-Hochberg correction. Opioid use, mental health service use, and outcomes by amputation level were secondary analyses. RESULTS: E

The role of white matter microstructure in the association between childhood maltreatment and adult post-traumatic symptoms.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a risk factor for adult post-traumatic symptoms and white matter (WM) alterations. It remains unknown how WM microstructure is affected alongside two common military conditions, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Data from 299 participants (53% male, 35.69 ± 12.23 years of age) of the Injury and Traumatic Stress (INTRuST) clinical consortium was analyzed. The study included 56 individuals with PTSD (41 with comorbid mTBI), 107 with mTBI, and 136 controls (no PTSD and/or mTBI). Diffusion parameters (mean, axial, and radia

Cross-ancestry and cross-disorder transferability of polygenic risk scores for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Most genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been conducted in European populations, limiting the understanding of OCD genetics across populations. Here, we investigated the cross-ancestry and cross-disorder transferability of European-derived polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for OCD in the first East Asian OCD cohort. We performed a GWAS in 532 Korean OCD cases and 4376 controls, followed by PRS analyses using European GWASs for OCD and 10 psychiatric disorders. The European-derived OCD PRS was significantly associated with Korean OCD status (best-fit R

The predictive role of alexithymia in the development of students' maladaptation during the first year of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

ObjectiveTo assess the predictive significance of alexithymia regarding the risk of developing adjustment disorder among students continuing face-to-face education under conditions of full-scale war.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey of 445 Ukrainian university students was conducted between April and December 2022. Participants completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20) and Adjustment Disorder New Module-8 (ADNM-8). Based on ADNM-8 scores, students were categorised into an adjustment disorder group (n = 228) and a control group (n = 217). Two logistic regression models were const

Pharmacological, clinical, and translational evidence for N,N-dimethyltryptamine, 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine, and zalsupindole: a systematic review.

Short-acting tryptamine psychedelics are emerging as candidate psychiatric therapeutics with pharmacological profiles that may offer practical advantages over longer-acting psychedelics. N,N-dimethyltryptamine (N,N-DMT) and 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) differ in pharmacokinetic, receptor, and phenomenological properties, while zalsupindole is a putatively non-hallucinogenic analogue. This systematic review aimed to synthesize pharmacological, clinical, safety, and preclinical behavioural evidence for these compounds. Ovid databases and PubMed were searched from inception to Dec

A living systematic review, meta-analysis, and open data resource of trials of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD.

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has emerged as a potential treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, rapidly changing evidence in a fast-moving field can be challenging to integrate. Here, we present a living systematic review and open-data meta-analytic resource on MDMA treatment for PTSD. In this initial release, 6 randomized controlled trials comprising 286 participants are included in the database. All six studies included in the review to date are sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Our primary model uses inverse-vari

Cervical Sympathetic Blockade for Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures Associated With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report and Neurobiological Framework.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), also termed functional seizures, are episodes that resemble epileptic seizures but occur without the abnormal ictal electrical activity characteristic of epilepsy. PNES is frequently associated with trauma exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and abnormalities in autonomic regulation. Emerging evidence suggests that altered interactions among limbic, autonomic, and motor networks may contribute to symptom generation. Cervical sympathetic blockade (CSB), including stellate ganglion block techniques, has been investigated as an intervention f

Oxytocin preserves excitatory responsiveness of VTA dopaminergic neurons in PTSD model rats.

Dysfunction of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopaminergic circuits is strongly implicated in the pathological progression of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Oxytocin (OXT) exerts robust stress-buffering effects, yet its direct neuromodulatory influence on VTA dopaminergic neurons under PTSD pathological conditions remains poorly defined. Here, we performed in vivo extracellular recordings to quantify spontaneous firing and burst activity in normal control and single prolonged stress (SPS)-induced PTSD model rats. Graded intracerebroventricular OXT infusions and OXTR antagonist pretre

Efficacy and safety of ketamine for post-traumatic stress disorder: A systematic review with narrative synthesis and consideration of military and veteran populations.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder with limited pharmaceutical treatment options. Ketamine, a noncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist with rapid-onset effects, has emerged as a potential treatment, particularly for patients who do not respond to first-line therapies. This systematic review synthesizes the current evidence on the effectiveness and safety of ketamine for PTSD, with a focus on military and veteran populations. Eligible studies included adults with PTSD, who evaluated ketamine or esketamine, and reported efficacy and safety outc

ICER-Controlled inhibitory plasticity of amygdala engram neurons regulates fear memory precision.

Fear discrimination-the ability to distinguish threatening stimuli from non-threatening ones-is an essential adaptive behavior, yet the neural mechanisms underlying individual differences in discrimination precision remain unclear. Here, we show that parvalbumin-positive interneuron (PV-IN)-mediated feedforward inhibition to fear engram neurons (ENs) in the lateral amygdala is selectively enhanced following auditory fear conditioning, driven by increased postsynaptic expression of α1 subunit (Gabra1)-containing GABAA receptors. Disruption of PV-IN activity during fear retrieval-via optogenetic

Workforce mental health as health security infrastructure: protecting emergency response capacity during public health emergencies.

Public health emergencies place substantial psychological demands on healthcare and public health emergency response workforces. While preparedness frameworks traditionally emphasize surveillance systems, infrastructure, and operational capacity, workforce mental health is increasingly recognized as an important determinant of sustainable emergency response. This Perspective examines how workforce mental health functions as an underlying determinant of health security capacity. Evidence from contemporary literature indicates that emergency responders experience substantial burdens of psycholog

Home-Based Primary Care and Emergency Department Use Among Veterans With Dementia: An Instrumental Variable Analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the veteran population ages, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) faces challenges in how to meet the care needs of patients with dementia. Providing high-quality, integrated care models in the home, such as home-based primary care (HBPC), can offer care aligned with veteran goals and present potential cost-savings to the VHA. OBJECTIVE: Examine the effect of VHA HBPC on the probability of emergency department/urgent care (ED) use. RESEARCH DESIGN: Cohort analysis using an instrumental variable approach. SUBJECTS: Veterans aged 65+ with dementia (2021-2023). MEASURES: We

Prevalence of mental health outcomes among trans and gender diverse adults: a global systematic review and meta-analysis.

Existing reviews of mental health outcomes among trans and gender diverse (trans)people have been limited by incomplete coverage, restricted or selected samples, afocus on youth populations, and insufficient exploration of heterogeneity. We aimed togenerate pooled prevalence estimates, and examine variation in mental disorders, suicidality, and non-suicidal selfinjury (NSSI) among trans adults globally. Weconducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting current orlifetime prevalence of mental disorders, assessed using symptom screeninginstruments with validated general-popul

Understanding stress from a cultural perspective: the role of self-construal.

Stress is an adaptive psychophysiological process that plays an important role in human survival and adjustment. Increasing evidence suggests that stress responses are shaped not only by environmental demands but also by cultural and self-related psychological processes. Self-construal, which refers to how individuals define themselves in relation to others, has been widely regarded as an important mechanism linking culture to cognition, emotion, motivation, and behavior. However, its role in stress-related processes has not been systematically synthesized. The current narrative review integra

Prediction models for postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder acts as an invisible scar, eroding maternal mental health and exerting long-term effects on infant development. Existing screening methods have limitations, hindering early prevention. Predictive models offer a promising approach for early identification of postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder. This study aims to establish a current evidence baseline and outline future directions through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We systematically searched ten databases-PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO,
