Effectiveness of phase-oriented treatment for trauma-related dissociative disorders: a systematic review.

Background: Dissociative disorders (DDs) are a group of mental health conditions characterised by disconnection from thoughts, feelings, memories, or sense of identity. It is believed that DDs, particularly dissociative identity disorder (DID) result from severe and chronic childhood trauma. Guidance from the International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD) recommends trauma-informed phase-oriented treatment (PoT) to treat DDs. To date, there has been no systematic evaluation of treatment effectiveness of PoT in DDs.Objective: This review aimed to systematically assess publ

Functional Neurological Disorder Among Neurology In-Patients.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of functional neurological disorders (FND) in specialized neurological services such as epilepsy centers or dizziness clinics is well established. Few studies exist that investigate the frequency of FND among neurology in-patients. METHODS: In-hospital patients with functional neurological symptoms as part of the presenting complaint were identified by combining prospective and retrospective case ascertainment over a period of 2 years. Demographic and clinical features as well as reimbursements were analyzed. RESULTS: Across a total of 4648 in-hospital patient

Coverage of dissociation and related concepts in psychiatric-mental health nursing textbooks.

PURPOSE: Nurses and nurse educators perceive a lack of knowledge, education, training, and educational materials related to dissociative disorders (DDs) and dissociative symptoms. Additionally, nurses and nurse educators report bias around the teaching of these concepts. Previous research on undergraduate psychopathology textbooks indicated insufficient and inaccurate coverage of dissociation and related concepts, but no such studies had been conducted within the profession of nursing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the presentation of DDs, dissociation, and related symptom

A 2-wave study on the associations between dissociative experiences, maladaptive daydreaming, bodily dissociation, and problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have reported an association between dissociative experiences (e.g., absorption, depersonalization) and Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU), but the directionality of these relationships remains unclear. Moreover, there is a dearth of research on the link between bodily dissociation and PSMU, despite the widespread practice of editing and manipulating pictures of oneself, which requires users to view themselves from a third-person perspective. The present study aimed to examine the directionality of the relationship between various dissociative-related exp

Understanding the countermovement to online presentations of psychiatric disorder that are perceived as "faked".

BACKGROUND: The self-presentation of psychiatric disorders on social media has generated a countermovement of sceptics who believe some are "faked" for reasons of self-promotion. This has been the focus of a Reddit forum called r/FakeDisorderCringe, an active community with almost 300,000 members. Given the influence of online discourse on public attitudes, understanding which diagnoses attract the most scepticism and what conversational themes surround these concerns is important in understanding lay controversies in mental health. METHODS: We used topic modelling using Latent Dirichlet allo

A latent profile analysis of positive psychotic symptoms and dissociative symptoms in the general population: their associations with childhood trauma and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Psychosis and dissociation are inter-correlated syndromes. As they are both multifaceted constructs, individuals experiencing positive psychotic and dissociative symptoms may have heterogeneous presentations of co-occurring symptomatology. This study aimed to identify phenotypes of individuals with varying degrees of these co-occurring symptoms in the general population, while also examining the impact of childhood trauma and prospective emotional and functional outcomes associated with these phenotypes. METHOD: Participants were recruited from the general population through diverse

Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Ketamine and Psilocybin in Comparison to Current Treatment Regimens for Treatment-Resistant Depression, Mood Disorders, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in the Pediatric Population: A Narrative Review.

The stresses of the Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlighted the burden of psychiatric disorders within the pediatric population, revealing a pre-existing need for rapid-onset therapies that have since driven efforts to expand effective therapeutic interventions. In this narrative review, we utilized the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to direct our report and study selection. We explored the current-state efficacy and therapeutic potential of ketamine and psilocybin in comparison to current treatment regimens for pediat

Frequency and characteristics of functional neurological disorder in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Functional neurological disorders (FND) are common yet frequently under-recognized in emergency settings. Reliance on diagnostic coding alone (e.g. ICD-10 diagnoses F44 and F45) likely underestimates their true prevalence and healthcare impact. This study aimed to assess the frequency and characteristics of FND among adult neurological emergency department (ED) presentations using a hybrid case-finding strategy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all neurological ED presentations (n = 5504) to a tertiary university hospital in 2023. A full-text keyword search of 184

Beyond the spike: Functional (dissociative) seizures as a key to holistic attitudes in seizure disorders.

Epileptologists can improve outcomes through follow-up and coordination of care for patients with functional seizures. Epileptic and functional seizures share some mechanistic overlap involving interoceptive, emotional, and stress dysregulation, and disorders of agency and perception. Similar psychiatric and neurological comorbidities occur at comparable rates in both functional and epileptic seizure populations. A holistic, biopsychosocial approach benefits all seizure patients and reflects modern models of epilepsy care.

Does the Portrayal of Dissociative Identity Disorder on TikTok Represent the Diverse Symptomatology of Its Clinical Presentation?

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is increasingly depicted on popular online platforms such as TikTok. The present study aimed to analyze the portrayal of DID symptoms on TikTok, by comparing the frequency of clinical DID symptoms displayed in these videos to clinical data. Five popular DID-related hashtags were identified and a sample of 55 videos per hashtag were randomly selected to be analyzed (N = 249). Video engagement metrics and content-creator descriptives were gathered, and the core clinical symptoms of DID were assessed based on the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID

A Scoping Review of Measures Used to Assess Stress-Related Motor Dysfunction in Functional Movement Disorder.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a complex condition characterized by a range of motor and non-motor symptoms, including tremors, dystonia, sensory disturbances and dissociative episodes. Functional Movement Disorder (FMD), a common motor subtype of FND, specifically involves abnormal involuntary movements without an identifiable structural or organic cause. There isn't a validated assessment tool that currently exists to measure the specific impact of stress on motor symptom variability in FMD. The absence of such tools presents a barrier to accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, an

Methods to induce dissociation and their effects on intrusions and memory: a randomized controlled trauma-film study.

Background: Peritraumatic dissociation is thought to contribute to posttraumatic symptoms like intrusions and memory disturbances. However, trauma-analogue studies that examined effects of experimental dissociation-induction on intrusions and memory were inconclusive. To better understand this, a necessary first step is to more systematically compare various induction methods. Objective: We evaluate different dissociation-induction-methods regarding their effectiveness, the intensity and quality of induced dissociation, and their effects on intrusions and memory in a pre-registered randomised-c

Effect of perioperative polarised light stellate ganglion irradiation on postoperative stress disorder in emergency trauma patients: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system after a traumatic event contributes to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Polarised light stellate ganglion irradiation (PLSGI) is a non-invasive and effective physiotherapy method for regulating the sympathetic nervous system. This study aims to investigate the effects of perioperative PLSGI on PTSD and pain-related outcomes in patients undergoing emergency surgery. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This multicentre, randomised, double-blind, controlled trial will include 510 adult patients scheduled for emergency tra

Epigenetic aging and DNA methylation biomarker changes following ketamine treatment in patients with MDD and PTSD: a pilot study.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are debilitating psychiatric conditions associated with poor health outcomes similarly observed in non-pathological aging. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic and NMDA receptor antagonist with demonstrated rapid reduction in symptoms associated with Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) and PTSD. Ketamine's effects on biological aging have not been extensively studied among patients with moderate to severe symptoms of depression and/or trauma. To address this gap, this study looked at the changes in non-epigenetic measur

Clinical patterns in a neuroimaging-based predictive model of self-reported dissociation.

Assessment of trauma-related dissociation has been historically challenging given its subjective nature and the lack of provider education around this topic. Recent work identified a promising neural biomarker of trauma-related dissociation, representing a significant step toward improved assessment and identification of dissociation. However, it is necessary to better understand clinical factors that may be associated with this biomarker. Participants were 65 women with histories of childhood maltreatment, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and varying levels of dissociation (e.g., co-occu

The Dissociative Symptoms Scale (DSS): Psychometric properties of scores on a German version in clinical samples.

Dissociation is a widespread phenomenon with significant mental health implications. The 20-item Dissociative Symptoms Scale (Carlson et al., 2018) was developed to measure moderately severe levels of dissociation across a broad range of clinical populations. The factor structure of the Dissociative Symptoms Scale comprises four domains: Depersonalization/Derealization, Gaps in Awareness and Memory, Cognitive-Behavioral Reexperiencing, and Sensory Misperceptions. In this article, we present a German version of the Dissociative Symptoms Scale (G-DSS) and examine the psychometric properties of s

From Attachment Trauma to Traumatic Attachment: Invisible Injuries of Early Childhood and Subtle Relational Codes of Self-Regulation.

Building on recent contributions by Farina and Schimmenti (2025a), this paper advances a more nuanced framework for their concept of attachment trauma focusing on the underlying mechanisms. The injury of attachment trauma, often concealed within ostensibly ordinary family systems, may leave no explicit memory trace yet manifest as enduring patterns of dysregulation. Instead, it becomes apparent through its clinical consequences such as Complex PTSD, borderline phenomena, dissociative disorders and their various complications. Central to the framework presented in this paper are the concept of

Playmasters at Work: Trauma Processing and the Shared Language of Play in Child Analysis.

Therapeutic play is a foundational discovery from psychoanalysis and is now a major contribution to child treatment in all its forms. Underacknowledged derivatives from child's play in adult treatments include: the attention to principles of development; the application of nonverbal relational process; utilization of somatic movement; and above all, the therapeutic engagement with child self-states in the full spectrum of dissociative disorders. This case report describes psychoanalytic play with a therapist/analyst who is schooled in principles of trauma treatment and its dissociative manifes

PTSD, complex PTSD and the dissociative subtype of PTSD in patients with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociation are associated with eating disorders (EDs) and serve as markers of higher severity and comorbidity. However, the role of complex PTSD (CPTSD) and the dissociative subtype of PTSD (DPTSD) in EDs remains relatively unexplored. METHODS: Participants were 635 patients (60% female) admitted to a higher level of care (residential, partial hospital or intensive outpatient) for treatment of a DSM-5 defined ED, substance use disorder (SUD), PTSD and/or mood disorder. In addition to a semi-structured interview, patients completed self-
