Hippocampal and amygdalar volumes in dissociative identity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Smaller hippocampal volume has been reported in several stress-related psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder with early abuse, and depression with early abuse. Patients with borderline personality disorder and early abuse have also been found to have smaller amygdalar volume. The authors examined hippocampal and amygdalar volumes in patients with dissociative identity disorder, a disorder that has been associated with a history of severe childhood trauma. METHOD: The authors used magnetic resonance imaging to measure

Ictal symptoms of anxiety, avoidance behaviour, and dissociation in patients with dissociative seizures.

OBJECTIVE: To examine anxiety related seizure symptoms and avoidance behaviour in adults with dissociative (psychogenic non-epileptic) seizures (DS) in comparison with a group suffering from partial epilepsy. METHODS: 25 DS and 19 epilepsy patients completed an attack symptom measure, the hospital anxiety and depression scale, the dissociative experiences scale, and the fear questionnaire. RESULTS: DS patients reported the presence of significantly greater numbers of somatic symptoms of anxiety during their attacks than the epilepsy group, despite not reporting subjectively higher levels of

Symptoms of traumatic stress and substance use in a non-clinical sample of young adults.

The link between symptoms of traumatic stress and substance abuse is well established in the literature, but the specific features of trauma that contribute to substance abuse remain elusive and have not been studied in non-clinical samples. The current study assessed the relationship between traumatic symptoms and alcohol use in a sample of Midwestern college students. Using multiple regression analysis, traumatic stress symptoms, overall, accounted for 55% of the variance in use of alcohol. Most importantly, dissociative behavior, intrusive thoughts, as well as low levels of tension reductio

Knowing 7 x 8, but not the meaning of 'elephant': evidence for the dissociation between numerical and non-numerical semantic knowledge.

Patients affected by semantic dementia (SD) and other severe cognitive deficits may show preserved numerical skills, including the retrieval of multiplication facts from long-term memory. No studies so far specifically investigated the network of arithmetic facts in semantic dementia. Thus, it is unknown whether preserved multiplication in SD truly reflects intact semantic knowledge or preserved retrieval of verbal sequences (just as the recitation of rhymes or poems). In the present study a patient (SG) with SD underwent an extensive assessment of number processing and calculation abilities.

Mechanisms of and effect of coadsorption on water dissociation on an oxygen vacancy of the MgO(100) surface.

The dissociation mechanism of a water molecule at an oxygen vacancy on the MgO(100) surface was studied by using the embedded cluster method at the DFT/B3 LYP level, while the energetic information was refined by using the IMOMO method at the CCSD level. We found that a water molecule initially adsorbs on one of the magnesium ions surrounding the vacancy site with a binding energy of 15.98 kcal mol(-1). It then can dissociate on the MgO(100) surface along two possible dissociation pathways. One pathway produces a hydroxyl group bonded to the original magnesium with a proton filling the vacancy

[The relevance of personality and sexual traumata for sexual offenders in forensic psychiatry].

BACKGROUND: Studies in forensic psychiatry indicate that persons in prison and psychologically disturbed sexual offenders have a high degree of traumatic experiences. But less is known about other specific risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which the diagnoses and traumata of sexual offenders differ from those of non-sexual offenders. METHOD: 51-male, German, forensic psychiatric patients were examined. Various self-evaluation questionnaires served to ascertain dissociative and general psychopathology and interpersonal problems. RESULTS: No significant corre

Toward a psychobiology of posttraumatic self-dysregulation: reexperiencing, hyperarousal, dissociation, and emotional numbing.

In this article we propose a psychobiological model that construes PTSD fundamentally as a disorder of affect arousal regulation. Neuroimaging studies of emotion regulation in psychologically healthy populations are initially reviewed as a framework for interpreting the results of previously published investigations of the neural correlates of PTSD reexperiencing and dissociation. We then apply the emotion regulation framework toward understanding other perturbed affective states in PTSD. We conclude by discussing the clinical significance of this framework for psychological assessment and tre

Depression and ethnicity as intermediary variables among dissociation, trauma-related cognitions, and PTSD symptomatology in youths.

The study of childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has grown in recent years, and several variables have been closely linked to the etiology of this condition. Prominent examples include dissociation, trauma-related cognitions, and depression, but no empirically based model regarding these variables has been presented. We examined 90 adolescents housed in a state-run facility for youths who experienced maltreatment, violence, and/or other traumas. Utilizing psychometrically strong dependent measures, we identified a structural equation model with depression as a key mediating variable

The impact of personal threat on police officers' responses to critical incident stressors.

The relationship of type of critical incident (CI) stressor with peritraumatic responses and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms was examined in police. Officers (N = 662) provided narratives of their most distressing CI experienced during police service and completed measures of related peritraumatic responses and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Narratives were reliably rated (kappa = .80-1.0) on seven categories emerging from a series of factor analyses of a measure of critical incident stressors. Additional analysis revealed that the classification of primary narrative features r

Psychological experience of gambling and subtypes of pathological gamblers.

Clinical experience and some empirical data suggest that different subtypes of gamblers may exist. This study examined psychometric properties of the Gambling Experience Measure (GEM) to establish support for differing subtypes of gamblers. In total, 149 treatment-seeking pathological gamblers completed the GEM and other instruments. A principal component analysis produced a three-factor solution that included gambling as a way to escape negative emotions (Escape), dissociating (Dissociation), and narcissism/seeking attention (Egotism). Multiple regression analyses revealed that being female a

Dynamic unfolding of a regulatory subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase by capillary electrophoresis: Impact of cAMP dissociation on protein stability.

Characterization of the unfolding dynamics of a recombinant type IA regulatory subunit (RIalpha) of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (cAPK) was examined by CE with UV detection. Electrophoretic separation of RIalpha by CE in a buffer devoid of cAMP resulted in rapid dissociation of the complex from the original sample due to the high negative mobility of the ligand relative to receptor. This process enabled in-capillary generation of cAMP-stripped RIalpha, which was used to estimate the apparent dissociation constant (Kd) of 0.6 +/- 0.2 microM. A comparison of RIa

[Dispute over the multiple personality disorder: theoretical or practical dilemma?].

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) could also be referred to as multiple personality disorder (MPD). Due to rare occurrence and difficulty in its' identification it is infrequently diagnosed in Poland. The indicated disorder has been portrayed by the authors throughout the historical context, referring to initial 18th century's references concerning dissociation. A typical dissociatively disordered person has been characterized along with his individual personality categories such as: original personality, altered personality, host and personality fragment. Moreover various diagnosis criteri

Recovered memory and the Daubert criteria: recovered memory as professionally tested, peer reviewed, and accepted in the relevant scientific community.

Research during the past two decades has firmly established the reliability of the phenomenon of recovered memory. This review first highlights the strongest evidence for the phenomenon itself and discusses the survey, experimental, and biological evidence for the varying mechanisms that may underlie the phenomenon. Routes to traumatic amnesia from dissociative detachment (loss of emotional content leading to loss of factual content) and from dissociative compartmentalization (failure in integration) are discussed. Next, an argument is made that false memory is a largely orthogonal concept to

Does dissociation further our understanding of PTSD?

Peritraumatic dissociation, and other dissociative reactions, refer to alterations in awareness in the context of a traumatic experience. This review provides an overview of the current conceptualization of dissociation, critiques methodological approaches to studying dissociation, and reviews the evidence for the purported relationship between dissociative reactions and posttraumatic stress disorder. The evidence challenges the notion that a linear relationship exists between dissociation and psychiatric morbidity. Future research should abandon the global construct of dissociation, and study

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in dissociative disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated basal and stress-induced hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis alterations in dissociative disorders (DDs). METHODS: Forty-six subjects with DD without lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 35 subjects with PTSD, and 58 healthy comparison (HC) subjects, free of current major depression, were studied as inpatients. After a 24-hour urine collection and hourly blood sampling for ambient cortisol determination, a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test was administered, followed by the Trier Social Stress Test. RESULTS: The DD group had significa

Role of dissociation in "false drug allergy".

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the influence of dissociation on the "false allergy" phenomenon. METHOD: Fifty-five individuals (11 males and 44 females) who consecutively presented for the study of their suspected drug allergy were assessed. RESULTS: After the challenge test, false allergy was found in 39.3% and placebo positive response in 12.5% of the patients. Seven patients (12.5%) scored above the cut-off point of 20 on the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), and 5 out of this group (71.4%) fit in the "false allergy" group. Pathological scores on the DES were a

The dissociative processing style:a cognitive organization activated by perceived or actual threat in clinical dissociators.

This paper proposes a cognitive organization that operates during times of perceived or actual threat in individuals with dissociative psychopathology. This organization, referred to as the dissociative processing style (DPS), serves as a threat monitoring system. It is characterized by (1) a shift from selective attention processing to multiple streams of information processing, (2) weakened cognitive inhibitory functioning which allows these streams to be operational and (3) the directing of awareness towards some and away from other information streams. Whilst DPS activation has the potenti

Development of dissociation: examining the relationship between parenting, maternal trauma and child dissociation.

While many studies have demonstrated relationships between trauma and dissociation, relatively little is known about other factors that may increase children's risk for developing dissociative symptoms. Drawing on betrayal trauma theory and Discrete Behavioral States frameworks, the current study examined the contributions of maternal factors (including mothers' dissociation, betrayal trauma experiences, and inconsistent parenting) to children's dissociation. Seventy-two mother-child dyads completed self-report questionnaires. Maternal dissociation was found to relate positively to maternal be

The FN400 indexes familiarity-based recognition of faces.

Separate event-related brain potential (ERP) components have been hypothesized to index familiarity and recollection processes that support recognition memory. A 300- to 500-ms mid-frontal FN400 old/new difference has been related to familiarity, whereas a 500- to 800-ms parietal old/new difference has been related to recollection. Other recent work has cast doubt on the FN400 familiarity hypothesis, especially its application to familiarity-based recognition of conceptually impoverished stimuli such as novel faces. Here we show that FN400 old/new differences can be observed with novel faces,
