The three longitudinal projects described in this special section of the Journal of Personality Disorders raise a number of intriguing questions concerning the natural history of personality disorders and offer more than their share of surprises. In addition, they underscore several valuable lessons derived from the literature on normal-range personality traits. Drawing in part from the writings of the American trait psychologist Gordon Allport, I describe four such lessons: (1) change and continuity of personality traits and disorders can and do coexist, (2) the covariation among personality

AIMS: To define the most frequent personality disorders related to alcohol dependence.
METHODS: Using the International Personality Disorder Examination and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II for personality disorders, 30 consecutively recruited alcohol-dependent patients attending an outpatient clinic were compared with 30 consecutively recruited psychiatric patients with non-addictive disorders and 31 subjects from the general population chosen to match the patient samples for age, gender and socio-economic level.

An index group of nineteen women who have had EDs for an average of 8.5 years was compared with a control group of same-aged women from the general population. Citalopram is a chiral antidepressant drug. Its eutomer, S-citalopram (escitalopram), has recently been introduced as an antidepressant. The interpersonal dependency inventory comprised three subscales called Emotional reliance of another person (ER), lack of social self confidence (LSS) and Assertion of autonomy (AUT). Several formula have been developed for deriving whole-scale scores. The aim of the study on 621 addictive subjects was to determine the best formula using the DSM-IV dependent personality disorder as gold standard. The formula 3 ER + LSS - AUT yielded the best values of sensitivity and specificity.
