Exploring Pathways to Gambling: Proposing the Integrated Risk and Protective Factors Model of Gambling Types.

Three linked studies, testing key aspects of the Pathways towards Problem and Pathological Gambling Model (Blaszczynski and Nower in Addiction 87(5):487-499, 2002), are presented. Study one comprised 204 students and 490 gambling forum users. It predicted differences in gambling severity, mental health and substance use across different motives for gambling. Those with a primary social motive for gambling displayed less severe gambling and anxiety than those without, with the primary coping subgroup displaying the most anxiety and depression. Those who gambled primarily to enhance positive aff

Young people and gambling: an empirical research.

Gambling appears today as a heterogeneous, multidimensional phenomenon (Caretti et al., 2010; Whelan et al., 2007) that involves also young people. In our country, there is a progressive increase in pathological gambling in the youth population and in the disadvantaged social strata also supported by strong media pressure to spread the use of gambling, thus fuelling the mentality of relying on fate rather than the skills or commitment to succeed in life. The purpose of this research is to investigate the knowledge, perceptions and behaviours associated with gambling in a sample of 523 Italian

Are Comorbid Disorders Associated with Changes in Gambling Activity? A Longitudinal Study of Younger and Older Subjects with DSM-IV Pathological Gambling.

This study investigates the association of comorbid disorders with gambling activity in a longitudinal follow-up study of younger and older adult subjects with DSM-IV pathological gambling (PG). The subjects included 57 younger adults with PG (≥ 18/ < 40 years) and 48 older adults with PG (≥ 60 years). Subjects were assessed at baseline and every 6 months for a mean (SD) of 31.4 (13.1) months. Comorbidity was assessed using a modification of the Longitudinal Interval Follow-up Evaluation (LIFE). During follow-up, rates of problem severity were highest for anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and

Efficacy of a Voluntary Self-exclusion Reinstatement Tutorial for Problem Gamblers.

Voluntary self-exclusion programs allow gamblers to voluntarily be denied access to gambling venues for an agreed upon period. Many people who self-exclude decide to return to gambling venues after the exclusion period has ended, however people who reinstate may be at risk for the recurrence of gambling problems. This study was designed to determine the efficacy of a tutorial created with the intent of reducing the risk of harm to those who reinstate. People who wished to be reinstated were asked to complete a survey on gambling related issues and then watch the tutorial video. An online video

An Exploratory Analysis of Predictors of Course in Older and Younger Adults with Pathological Gambling: A Non-Treatment Sample.

We examined the association of baseline social, demographic, and clinical predictor variables with course in 48 older (≥ 60 years) and 57 younger (< 40 years) subjects with pathological gambling (PG) in a prospective follow-up study. Weekly gambling activity was tracked and used to categorize PG course. Generalized estimating equation models were used to examine predictors of disordered (i.e., level 2 or 3) gambling. Interaction tests were used to test for differential relationships for older and younger subjects. Predictors of disordered gambling during follow-up included greater severity of

Current Addiction in Youth: Online Sports Betting.

Background: Gambling landscape has changed in recent years with the emergence of online gambling (OG). Greater accessibility and availability of this betting modality can increase the risk of developing a gambling disorder (GD). Online sports betting (OSB) is currently the most common type of OG, but little is known about the clinical characteristics of OSB compared to slot-machine (SM) gamblers, the most common offline gambling disorder. Methods: This was a prospective study conducted between October 2005 and September 2019, and included outpatients diagnosed with GD seen in a Pathological Ga

Is there a health inequality in gambling related harms? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Here we present a systematic review of the existing research into gambling harms, in order to determine whether there are differences in the presentation of these across demographic groups such as age, gender, culture, and socioeconomic status, or gambling behaviour categories such as risk severity and participation frequency. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Inclusion criteria were: 1) focus on gambling harms; 2) focus on harms to the gambler rather than affected others; 3) discussion of specific listed harms and not just harms in general terms. Exclusion criteria were: 1)

The neural substrates of risky rewards and losses in healthy volunteers and patient groups: a PET imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Risk is an essential trait of most daily decisions. Our behaviour when faced with risks involves evaluation of many factors including the outcome probabilities, the valence (gains or losses) and past experiences. Several psychiatric disorders belonging to distinct diagnostic categories, including pathological gambling and addiction, show pathological risk-taking and implicate abnormal dopaminergic, opioidergic and serotonergic neurotransmission. In this study, we adopted a transdiagnostic approach to delineate the neurochemical substrates of decision making under risk. METHODS: We

Use of Topiramate in the Spectrum of Addictive and Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review Comparing Treatment Schemes, Efficacy, and Safety Features.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Topiramate has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of epilepsy since the 1990s, and it has also been used off-label in the treatment of many types of addictive disorders. To date, no systematic review has embraced the entire field of addiction, both substance use and behavioral addictions, including eating disorders, to compare topiramate-based protocols and the related level of evidence in each addictive disorder. Our objective is to fill this gap. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using the MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Cochrane

Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: Epidemiology, Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Strategies.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are aberrant behavior such as pathological gambling, hypersexuality, binge eating, and compulsive buying, which typically occur as a result of dopaminergic therapy. Numerous studies have focused on the broad spectrum of ICDs-related behaviors and their tremendous impact on patients and their family members. Recent advances have improved our understanding of ICDs. In this review, we discuss the epidemiology, pathogenesis and treatment of ICDs in the setting of PD.

A Multi-Method Investigation of Normative and Pathological Personality Across the Spectrum of Gambling Involvement.

Pathological Gambling (PG) has been linked to both specific personality traits and personality disorders (PDs). However, previous studies have used a wide variety of research designs that preclude clear conclusions about the personality features that distinguish adults with PG from other groups. The current investigation seeks to advance this research by using a sample including adults who do not gamble, who gamble socially, and who exhibit PG, using self-report, informant-report, and interview-rated measures of personality traits and disorders. A total of 245 adults completed measures of gamb
