Identification of LsSLR1 gene in Leymus secalinus and validation of its function in Arabidopsis thaliana.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) imposes significant challenges, particularly for women, due to psychosocial and cultural factors affecting self-care. Psycho-spiritual interventions integrating psychological and spiritual support show promise in enhancing diabetes management. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluated a psycho-spiritual care program's impact on medication adherence, self-management, and glycemic control in women with T2DM. The study addresses a gap in rigorous, gender-specific RCTs for holistic diabetes care. METHODS: This single-blinded RCT enrolled 140 wo

Monospecific antibodies reveal reduction of granulins in frontotemporal dementia caused by GRN mutations.

PURPOSE: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a common ocular disease, associated with abnormalities in aqueous humor circulation and an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP), leading to progressive optical neuropathy and loss of vision. POAG pathogenesis includes alterations of the structural properties of the sclera, especially in the optic nerve head area, contributing to the degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells. Abnormal sclera biomechanics hinder adequate compensation of IOP fluctuations, thus aggravating POAG progression. The proteomic basis of biomechanical disorders in glaucoma

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Variations in Volume: Breast Size in Trans Women in Relation to Timing of Testosterone Suppression.

CONTEXT: Breast development is an important outcome for trans women receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). Limited breast development has been reported, possibly because of testosterone exposure during puberty. The impact of puberty suppression (PS) on breast development is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of PS and timing of PS prior to GAHT on breast volume and satisfaction. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study at a tertiary gender identity clinic, 60 trans women (aged 17-57 years) after 4.5 ± 1.7 years of GAHT were included, of whom 23 initiated PS early in puberty

Shaping the Skeleton: Impact of GnRH Analogue and Sex Hormone Therapy on Skeletal Dimensions in Transgender Individuals.

CONTEXT: Skeletal dimensions vary between sexes. Men typically have broader shoulders and women a wider pelvis. Whether gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) with or without prior puberty suppression (PS) alters these dimensions in transgender individuals remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate impact of PS and GAHT on skeletal dimensions. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study, conducted at a gender identity clinic, included transgender individuals assigned male at birth (AMAB) and assigned female at birth (AFAB) who underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning

Penile inversion vulvo-vaginoplasty with scrotal graft for trans women: surgical technique and results of initial experience.

BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of trans women is demanding for a genital gender-affirming surgery, with vulvo-vaginoplasty being the most frequently requested procedure. The gold standard for primary vaginoplasty in trans women is the penile skin inversion technique with scrotal skin graft, which allows for increased depth of the vaginal cavity. AIMS: The assessment of vulvo-vaginoplasty outcomes utilizing penile skin inversion and scrotal skin graft in individuals assigned male at birth in the surgeon's learning curve involves evaluating aesthetics, functionality, and sexual aspects.

Age and serum anti-Müllerian hormone levels as predictors of time to return of menses after chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT: Chemotherapeutic agents result in the loss of growing follicles, which can manifest as amenorrhoea. Alkylating chemotherapy (AC) is known to be more gonadotoxic than non-alkylating chemotherapy (NAC). Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), an indirect marker of ovarian reserve, and age have been investigated as predictors of ovarian function after chemotherapy; however, little is known about the time to return of menses. This study aimed to assess how patient age and baseline serum AMH levels at cancer diagnosis affect the time to return of menses post-chemotherapy. This retrospective cohort

Partial rejuvenation of the spermatogonial stem cell niche after gender-affirming hormone therapy in trans women.

Although the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on spermatogenesis in trans women has already been studied, data on its precise effects on the testicular environment is poor. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize, through histological and transcriptomic analysis, the spermatogonial stem cell niche of 106 trans women who underwent standardized GAHT, comprising estrogens and cyproterone acetate. A partial dedifferentiation of Sertoli cells was observed, marked by the co-expression of androgen receptor and anti-Müllerian hormone which mirrors the situation in peripubertal boy

Patient-reported outcomes in genital gender-affirming surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We reviewed the latest articles in patient-reported outcomes as it relates to genital gender-affirming surgery (GGAS) and provide a narrative summary of each article. RECENT FINDINGS: The current landscape of patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) within GGAS largely consists of various ad hoc questionnaires. Within the last two years, one new PROM, validated within the transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) community, have been described. SUMMARY: Patient-reported outcomes measures seek to elucidate the questions and answers of particular interest to patients and stakeh

Establishment of Rat Models Mimicking Gender-affirming Hormone Therapies.

Transgender (TG) people are individuals whose gender identity and sex assigned at birth do not match. They often undergo gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), a medical intervention that allows the acquisition of secondary sex characteristics more aligned with their individual gender identity, providing consistent results in the improvement of numerous socio-psychological variables. However, GAHT targets different body systems, and some side effects are recorded, although not yet fully identified and characterized. Therefore, TG people undergoing GAHT may be considered as a susceptible sub-

Future directions in transfeminine genital gender-affirming surgery: tissue substitutes and transplant.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present study reviews contemporary literature focused on uterine transplantation and tissue substitutes for the purposes of transfeminine genital gender affirming surgery (GAS). Additional background is provided for both topics to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the modern applications. RECENT FINDINGS: Uterine transplant remains an experimental procedure in cisgender patients who wish to avoid surrogacy. A natural extension might be to apply these techniques to GAS. Technical barriers include anatomic differences and alterations to gender-affirming hormon

Facial Augmentation in Transmasculine and Transfeminine Patients: Customization of Facial Implants and Increase in Facial Masculinization Surgery.

Facial augmentation is a key component of masculinizing and feminizing transgender faces. This article reports a single surgeon's experience with malar, chin, and mandibular angle augmentation in transmen and transwomen. Patients undergoing facial feminization surgery (FFS) and facial masculinization surgery (FMS) were retrospectively evaluated and categorized based on region of facial augmentation and type of facial augmentation as follows: fat grafting, stock silicone implants, and custom titanium implants. Fat grafting cases were limited to the malar region. Over a 2.5-year period, 211 pati

[Review of medical perception of non-binary and transgender continuum].

The physical and mental health of transgender and non-binary persons is a poorly researched area in our country. Diagnostic tools and awareness are limited, which makes the hidden client group particularly vulnerable. According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), ’gender incongruence’ is a permanent and significant discrepancy between the person’s lived and physical appearance. The lack of consistency alone does not indicate a diagnosis, but the more frequent occurrence of mental health difficulties and self-harming behavior justifies medical care in everyday general prac

Psychological assessment and counseling remain important features of quality care: A descriptive study of individuals who did not start gender-affirming medical treatment in a gender identity unit in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Not all individuals referred to gender identity units receive gender-affirming medical treatment (GAMT). However, there is a paucity of literature examining the reasons for this. This study aimed to investigate the reasons for not initiating GAMT in individuals who initially reported gender identity concerns and requested body changes in a gender identity unit in Spain, all of whom underwent psychological assessment and counseling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a total of 457 health histories and collected basic socio-demographic data and information on reaso
