Short-term risk and long-term incidence rate of herpes zoster with upadacitinib in patients with atopic dermatitis and psoriatic arthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Upadacitinib is a novel selective Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor. However, it increases the risk of herpes zoster infection. AIM: We aimed to estimate the short-term risk and long-term incidence rate of herpes zoster in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) treated with different doses of upadacitinib. METHODS: Randomised controlled trials and long-term (≥ 52 weeks) open-label extension studies of upadacitinib for AD and PsA were included. Short-term odds ratios (ORs) and long-term exposure-adjusted event rates (EAERs) for herpes zoster infection w

Utility of Pelvic Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a Younger Population.

OBJECTIVE: Pelvic examinations and transvaginal ultrasonography are generally deferred in patients without sexual experience due to potential distress. Transabdominal ultrasonography is widely used but may have variable image quality. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) serves as an alternative to evaluate underlying pathologies. This study investigated the clinical utility of pelvic MRI by comparing clinical presentations and management between adolescents and adults. METHODS: In this single-center, retrospective cohort study, we analyzed 262 female patients without sexual experience (63

Age-related trends and sexual dimorphism in inflammaging: Insights from the ATTICA study.

BACKGROUND: Since the hallmarks of aging precede clinical manifestations, we investigated whether inflammaging is present at younger ages than previously thought and exhibits sexual dimorphism, through cross-sectional analysis across age groups. METHODS: Circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), fibrinogen, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and ImmActScore, an aggregate score of IL-6, TNF-α and fibrinogen, were quantified in 1825 community-dwelling adults aged 18-89 years without cancer, cardiovascular, and chronic inflammatory disease from the ATTICA s

Syphilitic Hepatitis Presenting As Cholestatic Liver Injury: A Case Report.

Syphilis, caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum, is a sexually transmitted infection whose incidence has risen worldwide over the past decade and which may involve virtually any organ, including the liver. Syphilitic hepatitis is an uncommon and frequently overlooked manifestation that characteristically produces a cholestatic pattern of liver injury. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with no relevant medical history and self-reported sexual risk factors, admitted with a 15-day history of bilateral leg edema, fatigue, dry cough, odynophagia, weight loss, and conjunctivitis of the r

Synergizing strengths of four trauma-focused treatments in a highly intensive integrated program for posttraumatic stress disorder: rationale and two case descriptions.

BACKGROUND: Various evidence-based trauma-focused psychotherapies for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are available and several commonalities have been identified. Yet, these trauma-focused psychotherapies also have important differences. This raises the question whether several trauma-focused methods can be combined in one treatment format. Thus far, systematic efforts to combine multiple trauma-focused treatment methods have been limited. OBJECTIVE: To describe the rationale, structure, and application of a highly intensive treatment format integrating four trauma-focused psychotherapi

Differential pathways from childhood maltreatment types to non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with depressive disorders: a serial mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent among adolescents with depressive disorders, with childhood maltreatment (CM) as a key risk factor. However, how distinct CM types differentially influence NSSI risk in this population remains unclear. Moreover, emotion dysregulation and depressive symptoms have rarely been tested together as serial mediators within a single model. This study examined the serial mediating effects of emotion dysregulation and depressive symptoms linking five CM types to NSSI and compared their distinct pathways. METHODS: A total of 426 adolescents with d

Quality of life outcomes associated with stigma in autistic adults and their families: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impaired communication and repetitive and/or restricted behaviors or interests. Autistic adults face stigma in several forms including discrimination, negative judgement and stereotyping, which may contribute to poorer quality of life (QoL) outcomes. Whilst the impact of stigma on QoL in autistic pediatric populations have been extensively studied, autistic adults and their caregivers represent a gap in the literature. AIMS: To examine different types of stigma faced by autistic adults and their fami

A comprehensive model for gynecologic cancer patients' survivorship care.

OBJECTIVES: The population of gynecologic cancer survivors is rapidly increasing, yet survivorship care remains fragmented and often focused primarily on surveillance for disease recurrence. This review aims to define the key domains shaping survivorship and propose a comprehensive, patient-centered model for gynecologic oncology. METHODS: Our narrative reviews and synthesizes current evidence and clinical perspectives to examine gynecologic cancer survivorship. We organize the analysis around four clinically relevant pillars: menopause management, sexual health and function, psychosocial hea

Fertility preservation in girls and adolescents with Turner syndrome: lessons for reproductive care in differences of sex development - a mini-review.

Current knowledge regarding fertility preservation (FP) in girls is derived predominantly from pediatric oncology cohorts; however, FP is increasingly being applied to non-oncological conditions associated with impaired fertility, including differences of sex development (DSD). Turner syndrome (TS), characterized by accelerated germ cell depletion beginning during fetal life, represents the DSD condition with the greatest clinical experience in FP. This mini-review summarizes current evidence on ovarian tissue cryopreservation and oocyte cryopreservation in TS. Available data support the techn

MaltEms-MaltOBP9 axis mediates sexually dimorphic olfactory behavior in Monochamus alternatus via recognition of pheromone 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol.

The olfactory system is essential for insect survival and behavior, with odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) playing a key role by binding and transporting chemical signals to olfactory receptors. Although MaltOBP9 from Monochamus alternatus, a primary vector of pine wilt disease, has been linked to olfactory functions in M. alternatus, its regulatory mechanisms and specific roles are not well understood. In this study, we show that MaltOBP9 is highly expressed in the antennae of both male and female adults after sexual maturation. Using fluorescence spectroscopy, molecular docking, and site-direc

Exploring sexuality, sexual well-being and intimacy in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Sexuality and intimacy are central dimensions of identity, emotional well-being, social connectedness, and quality of life. In individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), these domains may be profoundly affected by illness-related, psychological, interpersonal, social, institutional, and treatment-related factors. Although antipsychotic-induced sexual dysfunction is clinically relevant, a broader understanding of patients' subjective experiences is needed to capture the meaning of sexuality, intimacy, and relational well-being in this population. METHODS: A systema

Sexual attraction and the link between self-objectification and body dysmorphic disorder: A community-based adolescent study.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterised by a preoccupation with perceived appearance flaws accompanied by repetitive behaviours or mental acts. The onset of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) typically occurs in adolescence and is associated with high levels of distress and poor quality of life. Sexual minority groups have been identified as at particular risk of developing BDD, though community-based adolescent research remains limited. This study aimed to examine probable BDD (PBDD) prevalence across sexual attraction groups and explore its impact on distress and quality of life. The stu

Altered Brain Extracellular Matrix Structure and Sex-Specific Learning/Memory Dysfunction in Mice Lacking the Functional Amyloid Cystatin-Related Epididymal Spermatogenic (CRES).

The brain's extracellular matrix (ECM) is highly specialized and unique. Unlike the collagen-rich matrices found in other tissues, it consists of complex proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans that play critical roles in neuroplasticity including the integration and storage of new memories. Cystatin-related epididymal spermatogenic (CRES) is a member of a reproductive subgroup of family 2 cystatins and part of a specialized functional amyloid-containing ECM with host defense functions in the epididymal lumen. CRES and the endogenous epididymal amyloid matrix exhibit high plasticity, forming dist

Material precarity and well-being among LGBTQ+ older adults in South Texas: findings from a community-engaged needs assessment.

BACKGROUND: LGBTQ+ older adults experience compounded vulnerabilities later in life, but most knowledge production about LGBTQ+ older adult experiences have occurred in coastal urban communities. This mixed-method community-engaged study aimed to (1) describe the occurrence and forms of material precarity among a sample of older LGBTQ+ adults in South Texas, (2) examine interactions between material precarity, health and social experiences; and (3) develop a cursory understanding of a community-driven LGBTQ+ aging agenda in the South Texas region. METHODS: The research team deployed descripti
