Agriculture-urban interfaces, social vulnerability and climate change shape West Nile virus risk across the United States.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory airway disease with a range of symptoms that can significantly impact quality of life. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the severity of nasal symptoms and sexual function in AR patients. METHODS: A case-control study involving 1034 AR patients and 422 healthy controls was conducted. Nasal symptoms were assessed using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, while sexual function was evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) for males and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) for fem

Reciprocal relationships between social support and depression among military cadets in Taiwan: findings from a long-term cross-lagged panel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the reciprocal relationship between social support and depressive symptoms among military cadets in Taiwan, a population facing unique academic and military pressures. While emerging adults are prone to mental health challenges, they encounter additional stressors such as strict hierarchies and separation from family. Social support is known to be a protective factor, yet its long-term effects and bidirectional relationship with depression remain underexplored, particularly in collectivist military cultures where mental health may be stigmatised. Using a cross

Adolescents report insufficient preventive health care in GP consultations: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period of empowerment and vulnerability that requires the early identification of risky behaviours to prevent them. Several prevention areas need to be addressed, including sexual health, mental health, substance use and addiction, diet, physical activity, orthopaedic disorders, vaccinations, screen use, and social relationships. Prevention plays an important role in primary care all over the world. Consultation between an adolescent and their GP can be complex. While there are professional recommendations, they rarely address all prevention areas. AIM: To underst

Micro- and nanoplastics and brain sexual differentiation: An emerging neurodevelopmental threat within the DOHaD framework.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have been increasingly detected in human tissues, including the placenta and, more recently, the brain. Their capacity to cross biological barriers such as the placenta and the blood-brain barrier raises significant concern for sexually dimorphic neurodevelopment. Brain sexual differentiation, orchestrated by steroid hormones, neuroimmune signaling, and epigenetic programming during early life, represents one of the most hormonally sensitive and developmentally critical targets of environmental disruption. In this narrative review, we synthesize evidence position

Elderly Offenders With Suspected Neurocognitive Disorders: An Explorative Study.

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy is increasing globally. A substantial expected rise in older age groups in the population is reflected in prisons, but focus on elderly offenders remains limited compared to other age groups. This is of concern, as cognitive impairments are often present among elderly offenders, possibly affecting their behaviour, criminal responsibility and responsiveness to treatment. AIMS: The objective of this study was to explore the associations between various cognitive variables, neurological diagnosis and different types of crime by offenders of 60 years or older. METHODS

Person-Centered Strategies to Promote Health Equity and Tackle Stigmatization: The Role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination and stigmatization in emergency departments continue to threaten equitable and safe patient care, particularly for individuals with psychiatric disorders and other marginalized groups. This could include people who are homeless or who are discriminated against because of their sexuality or gender or for other reasons. Traditional education focused solely on knowledge transfer has proven insufficient to address these issues. Person-centered practice, grounded in values, beliefs, and authentic relationships, offers a promising framework to foster equity, inclusion, a

Sexual Assault and Forensic Exam Offers in the Emergency Department: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who report sexual assault in the emergency department (ED) have a legal right to a forensic exam. Emergency departments that do not provide such exams must offer transfer to a forensic site. Little is known about the factors influencing whether patients are offered a forensic exam and complete the transfer. In this study we aimed to identify patient characteristics associated with being offered a forensic exam in an ED that does not perform them on site. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of adult patients presenting to a single, urban, academic ED betwe

Sex-related differences in aggressive and emotional behavior in mice with the conditional inactivation of limbic Npy1r.

Anxiety- and depression-related disorders are frequently associated with deficits in social behavior, including excessive aggression and violence, which may arise from disruptions in the neural circuits regulating emotions and social interactions. Sex differences play a crucial role in modulating emotional and social behaviors, particularly aggression and anxiety. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and its Y1 receptor (Y1R) are involved in regulating various physiological functions, including emotional behavior and stress response. We previously demonstrated that conditional knockout of Npy1r gene in the fo

Epigenetic regulation of aggression-linked genes following prenatal stress enhances risk for sexual aggression in male rat offspring.

Early-life psychosocial adversity can shape adult behaviour through enduring epigenetic mechanisms, yet the neurobiological pathways linking parental stress to offspring socio-affective behaviour remain incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether paternal social isolation and maternal prenatal stress are associated with persistent DNA methylation differences in aggression- and stress-related neurochemical receptor genes in male rat offspring, and whether these molecular alterations co-occur with changes in aggression-like and maladaptive mating behaviour. Male Wistar rats were gener

Exploring the Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Sexual Victimization in High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have lasting mental, sexual, and physical health effects, including increased risk of psychological disorders, chronic conditions, and risky sexual behavior. Yet, few studies examine their link to sexual victimization in adolescents, particularly LGBTQIA+ youth. This study addresses these gaps to inform targeted, trauma-informed prevention strategies. METHODS: Using national CDC YRBS data, participants included 10,553 high school students who provided information on both ACEs and sexual victimization. The independent variable included ACEs ques

Relationships between individual characteristics, poly-strengths, and mental health outcomes after sexual violence among Icelandic adults: A resilience portfolio approach.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual violence is associated with a greater risk of several mental health disorders and an increased risk of revictimization. Poly-victimization heightens the risk of adverse mental health outcomes. Nevertheless, some individuals demonstrate resilience following such experiences. Research on malleable psychological strengths is needed to inform interventions, particularly in the Nordic context. Accordingly, we conducted the first study in Iceland to examine factors associated with positive adaptation through the lens of the resilience portfolio model and the cumulative effects of p
