Choanal atresia and athelia: methimazole teratogenicity or a new syndrome?

An infant girl with choanal atresia, athelia, minor anomalies, and mild to moderate mental retardation was born to a woman treated for hyperthyroidism throughout pregnancy with methimazole and propranolol. The patient's defects may be due to methimazole teratogenicity or could represent a previously undescribed syndrome affecting ectodermal structures.

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda: a new autosomal recessive variant with mental retardation.

A new variant of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda with mild to moderate mental retardation is described in three daughters born to healthy, consanguineous parents. The mode of inheritance is compatible with that of an autosomal recessive disorder. The identification of this variant is important, as it enables more precise counselling in families in which sporadic cases with this form of presentation are found.

Acrocentric/18p translocation in two mentally retarded males. Delineation of the adult phenotype.

In this report we describe two adult male patients with a chromosomal rearrangement involving the short arm of chromosome 18 and an acrocentric chromosome. In addition to moderate mental retardation and verbal disability they presented dysmorphic stigmata similar to those found in the Noonan syndrome.

A single-subject study of imipramine in a mentally retarded woman with depressive symptoms.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, reversal design was used to assess imipramine. The subject was a young woman, with moderate mental retardation, whose salient clinical characteristics included weight loss, episodes of screaming and crying, agitation, and generally high levels of irritable behaviour. As compared with placebo, 100 mg of imipramine resulted in consistent improvement in terms of increased food consumption, decreases in screaming and crying, and stabilized sleep. Drug effects were fairly specific and a number of other clinical variables were unaffected by treatment. There was no

Autosomal dominant piebaldism and mental retardation syndrome associated with a t(1;2) (p22.1;q36).

A syndrome of piebaldism and mild to moderate mental retardation was present in 3 sibs and their father. Besides, the disorder was segregating concordantly with a t(1;2) (p22.1;q36). It is concluded that the syndrome is due, either by gene breakage or dysfunction, to the translocation.

Spastic paresis, glaucoma and mental retardation--a probable autosomal recessive syndrome?

A syndrome of spastic paresis, mental retardation and glaucoma has been described only once previously (Heijbel & Jagell 1981). We describe three brothers, products of a marriage between first cousins once-removed, who appear to have the same syndrome. The brothers are not dysmorphic but they have slowly progressive spastic paresis, moderate mental retardation and glaucoma with secondary cataracts. Documentation of a second consanguineous kindred with this triad of features supports the view that this is a distinct entity with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance.

Tissue-specific mosaicism for the stability of a ring 13 chromosome.

A ring 13 chromosome was identified in an infant whose chromosomes were studied because of microcephaly. The ring chromosome was studied over a 3-year-period in lymphocytes, and in both short- and long-term fibroblast cultures. Lymphocyte cultures revealed a consistently stable ring 13 chromosome with minimal loss of genetic material (the distal portion of band q34). Fibroblast cultures contained a ring chromosome a quarter of the size of the original ring and this chromosome was unstable in short- and long-term cultures. The patient's mild dysmorphic features and moderate mental retardation c

The velo-cardio-facial (Shprintzen) syndrome. Clinical variability in eight patients.

Eight patients (three sporadic, five from two families) with the velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) or Shprintzen syndrome are reported. Major clinical findings of this syndrome include a characteristic pattern of facial dysmorphisms, cleft palate, cardio-vascular malformations, and (mostly mild-to-moderate) mental retardation or learning difficulties. The syndrome probably is caused by a dominant gene with very variable expression. From previous reports mostly ascertained from cardio-vascular or cleft palate clinics, the incidence of cleft palate and heart defects was calculated to be 98% and

Auditory brain stem responses(ABR) in developmentally retarded infants and children.

We recorded ABR in 65 infants and children with developmental retardation and analyzed the relationship between the incidence of abnormal findings and the degree of mental retardation, which was confirmed by follow-up observation and formal intelligence tests. There were 3 cases for whom no response could be obtained. In the 21 retardates with specific causes of retardation or complications, peripheral abnormalities were noted in 13 (62%) and central abnormalities in 11 (52%). The 41 cases of idiopathic retardates were divided into three categories according to the degree of mental retardation

The Dubowitz syndrome.

The Dubowitz syndrome is a rare, autosomal, recessively inherited disorder of intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation leading to microcephaly, moderate mental retardation and such characteristic facial anomalies as telecanthus, epicanthic folds, blepharophimosis, ptosis, broadening of the bridge and tip of the nose, abnormal ears and retrogenia. Further findings include hyperactivity, eczema, cryptorchidism in the affected males, and brachy-clinodactyly of the fifth fingers. Thirty-three cases with this syndrome have been reported in the literature. Five additional patients are presented

Congenital muscular dystrophy and cerebral CT scan anomalies. Results of a collaborative study of the Société de Neurologie Infantile.

We present the results of a collaborative study on the association of congenital muscular dystrophy with central nervous system anomalies revealed by CT scan investigation of 10 patients. In seven children, an abnormal hypodensity of the cerebral white matter is found; in four of these patients, this radiological anomaly is either isolated, or associated with a moderate intellectual impairment; in one case, severe mental retardation and ocular changes had occurred; in the other two cases, the muscular disease was progressing slowly, in association with microcephaly, epilepsy, and moderate ment

Effects of social behavior on children's attitudes toward their mildly and moderately mentally retarded peers.

The ability of prosocial behavior attributes to ameliorate the negative attitudes often brought about by negative personal characteristics associated with mild and moderate mental retardation was assessed. Subjects (191 nonretarded fourth through sixth-grade boys and girls) viewed a videotape of either a nonretarded, mildly retarded, or moderately retarded target child who was reading. They then were read a story depicting the target as either socially competent, withdrawn, or aggressive. On three measures, children in general responded favorably toward retarded target children who were social

Disequilibrium syndrome in Montana Hutterites.

This is a preliminary note on the occurrence of the disequilibrium syndrome (DES) in the Dariusleut Hutterites of Montana. Previously the condition was reported in the Dariusleut of Alberta by Schurig et al [1981] as an autosomal recessive, non-progressive neurological disorder with congenital hypotonia, considerable psychomotor retardation, unsteady broadly based gait and stance, increased deep tendon reflexes, and mild to moderate mental retardation. Affected individuals were short. In the Montana family studied by us in 1981, a brother and three sisters are affected.

Late infantile autosomal recessive myotonia, mental retardation, and skeletal abnormalities: a new autosomal recessive syndrome.

Four sibs of non-consanguineous parents who had myotonia from late infancy are described. Mild to moderate mental retardation, severe bone abnormalities of the vertebral column (mainly in the thoracolumbar region), and short stature were also observed. Autosomal recessive inheritance is demonstrated. These cases are compared with reported cases of the Schwartz-Jampel syndrome.

Cytogenetic study in a mentally retarded child with Bloom syndrome and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bloom syndrome (BS) was diagnosed in a 7-year-old boy during hospitalization for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The patient had most of the signs of BS along with some atypical manifestations: absence of telangiectases, obesity, and moderate mental retardation. Results of the cytogenetic studies were fully consistent with the diagnosis of BS: the occurrence of quadriradial figures and a very high incidence of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE). This child's ALL was of non-B, non-T type with the presence, at the time of diagnosis, of a marrow clone including two markers. A Yq - chromosome wa

Childhood psychosis in a case of Moebius syndrome.

A case of a five-year-old boy with Moebius syndrome, mild-moderate mental retardation and childhood psychosis (possibly infantile autism) is described. This is probably the first case ever of concomitant Moebius syndrome and childhood psychosis to be reported. Brainstem dysfunction is proposed as a common denominator in the neurologic and psychiatric syndrome.

A family with fragile-X syndrome.

A family with fragile-X syndrome is reported. One sibling has atypical pervasive developmental disorder and moderate mental retardation. A second sibling has Tourette's syndrome, moderate mental retardation, seizure disorder, and autism. A third sibling has attention deficit disorder, moderate mental retardation, and developmental language disorder, expressive type. The authors believe that this family represents a classic example of the differential outcome of interactions of common biogenetic and environmental influences. We propose that in this family the multipotential outcome is at least

[Adult identical twins with moyamoya disease].

Adult identical twins with Moyamoya disease are reported. Laboratory examinations such as blood types, AB, Rh(+), HLA (human leucocytic antigen) analysis [AW26(9), A26(10), BW62(15), BW61(40), CW3], and finger prints, and hairs confirmed that two patients were identical twins. Both had normal serum immunoglobulin levels and no anti-DNA antibodies. Patient No. 1, a 39-year-old female, was admitted to our service with chief complaints of nausea, vomiting and left hemiparesis with sudden onset on Oct 31, 1981. The patient had an episode of tetraplegia that occurred suddenly at 4 years of her age
