Altered patterns of cerebral activity during speech and language production in developmental stuttering. An H2(15)O positron emission tomography study.

To assess dynamic brain function in adults who had stuttered since childhood, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured with H2O and PET during a series of speech and language tasks designed to evoke or attenuate stuttering. Speech samples were acquired simultaneously and quantitatively compared with the PET images. Both hierarchical task contrasts and correlational analyses (rCBF versus weighted measures of dysfluency) were performed. rCBF patterns in stuttering subjects differed markedly during the formulation and expression of language, failing to demonstrate left hemispheric lateral

Measures of language proficiency as predictors of behavioral difficulties, social and cognitive development in 2-year-old children.

An exploratory study of the relation of language proficiency, behavioral difficulties, and various areas of development was conducted with 64 children ranging from 24 to 29 months of age (M = 25.7 mo.). Data were obtained through language sampling, direct developmental assessment, and maternal reports of children's development and behavior. While scores on measures of expressive language abilities were moderately predictive of scores on measures of behavior problems, a stronger association was found between indices of delayed speech and lower scores on both social and cognitive development. A theory of neurolinguistic development.

This article offers a developmental theory of language and the neural systems that lead to and subserve linguistic capabilities. Early perceptual experience and discontinuities in linguistic development suggest that language develops in four phases that occur in a fixed, interdependent sequence. In each phase of language, a unique ontogenetic function is accomplished. These functions have proprietary neural systems that vary in their degree of specialization. Of particular interest is an analytical mechanism that is responsible for linguistic grammar. This mechanism is time-locked and can only

Schizophrenia and autism considered as the products of an agnosic right shift gene.

Crow (1995a) has argued that schizophrenia is caused by a gene associated with the evolution of human language and cerebral specialisation. This paper suggests a mechanism for Crow's theory which requires only one new assumption for the right shift genetic model of handedness and cerebral dominance (Annett, 1978). The proposal is that the RS+ allele, whose normal function is to induce the left hemisphere to serve speech by impairing speech-related cortex in the right hemisphere, tends to lose its directional coding. It becomes agnosic (RS+ a) for right versus left and impairs the left or right

Follow-up study of a right- and a left-hemispherectomized child: implications for localization and impairment of language in children.

Two hemispherectomized girls, one operated on the right, the other on the left, were followed from time of surgery until 9 and 10 years of age and compared with respect to course of language acquisition following surgery. At conclusion of follow-up, receptive and expressive language, phoneme perception and production, and sentence processing of the two hemispherectomized children were compared with those of two control groups of similar age, one developing language normally, the other language-impaired. The left-hemispherectomized child's abilities were similar to those of the language-impaire

Serious hearing impairment among children aged 3-10 years--Atlanta, Georgia, 1991-1993.

Hearing impairment without appropriate intervention among young children can delay the acquisition of speech and language skills that, in turn, can result in learning and other problems at school age. Interventions to reduce the occurrence of communication disabilities associated with hearing impairment are most successful if affected children are identified early, ideally during the first few months of life. Technologies are now available to accurately and routinely screen all newborns for hearing impairment before hospital discharge. One of the national health objectives for the year 2000 is

Partial trisomy of 15q due to inserted inverted duplication.

A de novo abnormal chromosome 15, with an inverted duplication of the segment (15q13.3 --> 15q21.3) at 15q24.3, was found in a boy with mild developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, Marfan-like appearance and severe language delay. There is an unusual disparity between the severe lack of speech and the presence of reasonable skills in other areas.

Support services for parents and their children who are deaf or hard of hearing. A national survey.

In the spring and summer of 1996, 404 parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and were born in 1989 or 1990 completed questionnaires about early services received and the current status of their children's development. The children were enrolled in 137 different programs in 39 states; about one quarter of the programs participating in Gallaudet's Annual Survey of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children and Youth. Children who are deaf comprised 46% of the group for whom responses were provided; those who are hard of hearing comprised 54%. Hearing loss was confirmed at the mean age of 14.

A study of cognitive development and behavior problems in mentally retarded children.

Cognitive development in seventy-one mentally retarded children (19 autistic, 52 non-autistic; aged 7-19 years) from a school for handicapped children was studied, using Ohta's scale for evaluating cognitive development level based on language comprehension (Ohta's stage), and other developmental scales. Behavior problems were also examined. The present study reports on the utility of Ohta's stage in non-autistic children, and the relationship between cognitive development level and behavior problems in mentally retarded children. In non-autistic children, there were temporal correlations betw

Hearing, speech, language, and vestibular disorders in the fetal alcohol syndrome: a literature review.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized in part by mental impairment, as well as craniofacial and ocular anomalies. These conditions are traditionally associated with childhood hearing disorders, because they all have a common embryonic origin in malformations of the first and second branchial arches, and have similar critical periods of vulnerability to toxic insult. A review of human and animal research indicates that there are four types of hearing disorders associated with FAS. These are: (1) a developmental delay in auditory maturation, (2) sensorineural hearing loss, (3) intermitte

[Value of the Heidelberg Language Development Test in diagnosis of children with language development disorders].

Diagnosis of developmental speech and language disorders in accordance with the ICD-10 is to be based on the psychometric assessment of speech and language performance. In the present study the clinical validity of the Heidelberger Sprachentwicklungstest (HSET) for diagnosing expressive language disorders was assessed by comparing HSET subtest results for 92 children aged 4 to 10 years who had various speech and language disorders with the children's scores on another language test, a cognitive test and clinical findings. The HSET scores differed considerably from the clinical ratings of the s

Clinical characteristics of children referred to a child development center for evaluation of speech, language, and communication disorders.

Speech, language, and communication disorders are prominent reasons for referrals to a child development center. From 1984 to 1988, 1,090 preschool children were referred to our child development center, which serves the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Of all referrals, 432 (41%) were primarily due to speech, language, and communication problems. After exclusion of those with IQ < 50 and those with non-language-related disabilities, 323 children remained. The children were classified into different subtypes of developmental language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders. The main developmental

[Combined verbal and sign language for promoting communication development in non-verbal or or pre-verbal children and adolescents with mental retardation].

Conveying alternative and augmentative approaches to communication is becoming necessary for increasing numbers of persons with mental retardation with no or poor oral skills. The preverbal and nonverbal forms of communicating, hence, have special relevance in a developmental context. A natural extension of gestic messages, it in particular is the use of signing that is apt to enhance speech and language acquisition and bring about distinct improvement in understanding and making oneself understood. Exchanging messages by sign language can reveal to the child the significance of his/her own be

Epileptic akinetic mutism: following temporal lobectomy for Rasmussen's syndrome.

A girl aged 9 years with Rasmussen's encephalitis previously treated by left temporal lobectomy suddenly developed prolonged attacks of extremely rapid respirations associated with poverty of body movements and greatly reduced facial movements with loss of speech. Her comprehension appeared intact and she responded to certain requests. Her eye gaze behaviour suggested a high degree of vigilance. The attacks would last from minutes to hours and were repeated up to a dozen times daily. In the context of the stress generated by the illness and other family problems the attacks had been mistaken f

[Cochlear implant management of young children].

INTRODUCTION: Since 1988, more than 450 children have received cochlear implants at the Department of Otolaryngology of the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover. Among them are 38 children who underwent surgery before the age of two. Due to increasing experience with this technique, the mean age at implantation has decreased over time so that most children nowadays receive implants between the ages of two and five. In terms of the critical periods of both development of the auditory system and the acquisition of language, it is advantageous for even younger children to receive implants soon after

ADHD, DAMP and other neurodevelopmental/psychiatric disorders in 6-year-old children: epidemiology and co-morbidity.

A total population of 589 6-year-old children were screened for neurodevelopmental/neuropsychiatric disorders by questionnaires to parents and preschool teachers, and by examination of motor abilities at the Child Health Center. Fifty screen-positive and fifty screen-negative children were assigned for complete neuropsychiatric assessment comprising a detailed history, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental assessment, neuropsychological examination and speech/language evaluation. Comprehensive diagnoses were made on the basis of all the available information. In the total population, 63 children

[Developmental dysphasia].

Developmental dysphasia is characterized by severe, specific and unexplained developmental language impairment. Phonologic and syntactic disorders of expressive language and perceptual deficit are almost always present. Moreover, certain specific linguistic symptoms are particular to each dysphasic child, explaining the efforts to classify different forms of dysphasia. The most important point is to separate receptive dysphasia from the expressive on the one hand, and severe forms from the mild which are closed to "simple language delay", on the other. The evolution of oral language is variabl

Linguistic interaction: the active role of parents in speech therapy for cleft palate patients.

As speech and language intervention becomes more naturalistic, it seems obvious that language and other developmental competencies are, in a strong way, a function of the quality and quantity of relationships in which the child evolves. This paper compares two different speech therapy groups of cleft palate children. Children included in the first group received therapy alone with the speech pathologist, whereas children from the second group received speech therapy accompanied by their mothers. The purpose was to evaluate and provide the mothers with interaction modes for facilitating communi

Family patterns of developmental dyslexia. Part III: Spelling errors as behavioral phenotype.

The major trends in current research on developmental dyslexia assume that impaired phonological processing is the core deficit in this disorder. Our earlier studies indicated that half of all dyslexic persons have significant deficits of bimanual motor coordination, and that impaired temporal resolution in motor action may identify a vertically transmitted behavioral phenotype in familial dyslexia. This report examines the relationship between spelling errors as a measure of impaired phonological processing and motor coordination deficits in the same dyslexia families. Affected family members
