Enhanced observation for management of agitated, confused or distressed behaviours in acute general hospitals: systematic review of quality and safety considerations.

BACKGROUND: People who are agitated, confused or distressed seldom receive holistic care within acute general hospitals. Unmet needs relating to conditions such as mental illnesses, learning disabilities or dementia can contribute to patient behaviours which staff find challenging to manage (e.g. self-harm). Enhanced observation, involving one-to-one care and monitoring, is a restrictive intervention often used to manage these presentations. The characteristics and outcomes of high-quality enhanced observation in this setting remain ill-defined, compromising quality and safety. AIMS: To under

Rate and Associates of Early Childhood Care and Education Attendance Among Children With Developmental Difficulties From a Middle-Income Country, Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Although the World Health Organisation (WHO) Nurturing Care Framework included early learning opportunities as a main component for optimal child development, important inequalities exist between high-income and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) regarding early childhood care and education (ECCE) attendance for children with developmental difficulties (DDs). We aimed to determine the rate and associates of ECCE attendance for young children with DDs from a middle-income country, Turkey. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, we recruited children aged 12-60 months who wer

Infection prevention and control in residential congregate settings for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A learning needs assessment.

Infection prevention and control (IPC) practices are important to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in congregate residential settings, including group homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). These settings face unique challenges and often receive fewer IPC resources than other congregate residence types. The New York City Health Department conducted a learning needs assessment comprised of a survey among leadership (n=41) and focus groups with frontline staff (n=9). Results highlight the need for IPC guidance tailored specifically to IDD residential se

A review of full-stack autonomous obstacle avoidance for assistive robots for the disabled.

With the intensification of population aging and the increasing awareness of protecting the rights of the disabled, significant progress has been made in assistive robots for visually impaired people, the mobility impairments and other groups. Research in this field focuses on four key technical dimensions: environmental perception, obstacle recognition and classification, path planning and obstacle avoidance algorithms, and scenario-based applications. This analysis particularly focuses on the ability of multi-sensor fusion to acquire spatial information in complex and dynamic environments, a

Intact spatial learning in Fmr1-/y , Syngap1+/-, and Grin2b+/- rat models of neurodevelopmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: FMR1, SYNGAP1, and GRIN2B gene mutations Q8 are known causes of mild to severe intellectual disability (ID) in humans, with affected individuals frequently co-diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These three genes influence molecular mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity, and thus spatial memory behaviors have been of interest in studying rodent models of these mutations. However, evidence of spatial memory impairment across these models is inconsistent, with some studies reporting deficits and others finding none. METHOD: In the present study, we used a variant of

Child Health Challenges, Ecosystem Mismatches, and the Case for State-Level Policy Innovation.

Policy Points From 2011-2023, US children's health deteriorated across >170 indicators. Chronic conditions rose from 25.8% to 31%, risk of anxiety tripled, and autism and learning disability more than doubled. Policies based on biomedical models have failed to address these trends. Life course models regard health as a developmental process, with mismatches between children's physical, nutritional, and relational environments and the ones they are evolutionarily calibrated to expect as likely drivers of declining health. State policies can help to overcome mismatches and optimize developmental

Drug Repurposing for Treating NCOR-Related Intellectual Disability.

Nuclear receptor corepressors (NCOR1/2) mediate the transcriptional activity of methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2), and genetic variants in NCOR1/2 or MECP2 associate with autism or intellectual disability. However, it is unknown whether heterozygous NCOR mutations impair cognitive functions and how NCOR-related intellectual disability can be treated. Here, we constructed a knock-in (KI) mouse line carrying a heterozygous NCOR1 mutation (NCOR1 c.2182+2T>G) found in a pediatric patient. These NCOR1KI/+ mice showed social avoidance, stereotypic behaviors, and memory deficits, similar to hetero

A comparative study and analysis of recent EEG-based brain-computer interface approaches and their applications.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an innovative tool that interprets brain instructions and enables humans for using their mental instructions to operate computers, robots, and other external equipment. People with motor disabilities may now utilize external devices much more easily because to recent advancements in BCI technology. This study analyzes newly developed models and provides a comprehensive literature overview of current developments for the field of completely EEG-based BCI systems. In this paper, the basic concepts of EEG-based BCIs are presented, and the key constituents of the

Effects of multisensory tactile‑auditory integration teaching on systematic anatomy learning in visually impaired medical students.

PURPOSE: Medical education for visually impaired students faces persistent barriers due to the inherent visual dependency of anatomy and the prevalence of unimodal instructional paradigms. This study aimed to design and evaluate a novel tactile-auditory integrated teaching strategy for systematic anatomy, comparing its effectiveness against traditional Braille-based instruction in enhancing academic performance and learning attitudes among visually impaired medical students. METHODS: A 16-week cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted with 60 visually impaired undergraduate students s

Development and User Testing of an Online Platform to Deliver School-Based Inclusive Physical Education Solutions: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive physical education (PE) plays a vital role in promoting participation and development among students with different abilities. However, many teachers do not have adequate tools to modify PE activities to meet these diverse needs. In addition, parents are essential partners, as their involvement helps reinforce strategies and provide useful information about their children. While online platforms provide a practical way to deliver such solutions, only a few have been intentionally created to support both teachers and parents in implementing inclusive PE learning. Designing and Delivering a Dissemination Programme With Co-Researchers With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: While dissemination is core to the research cycle, producing accessible materials has received scant attention. Having finished a co-designed project we wanted to share our findings with a range of audiences. METHOD: Using the community engaged research dissemination (CERD) framework helped identify a range of dissemination audiences and appropriate materials. Various dissemination materials were co-created with facilitators. Focus groups and interviews explored people's experiences of taking part in this process and analysed using Template Analysis. RESULTS: A dissemination matr

Reconnecting the disconnected forebrain: multimodal resting-state bold dynamics underlying zolpidem-induced arousal in incomplete Locked-in syndrome.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Zolpidem paradoxically restores behavioral responsiveness and communication in select patients with severe disorders of consciousness and profound motor deafferentation. While the anterior forebrain mesocircuit hypothesis attributes this awakening to central thalamic disinhibition, macroscopic network dynamics and lower brainstem gating remain under-characterized in locked-in syndrome (LIS). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A 45-year-old male with ventral pontine necrosis initially misdiagnosed as vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) was formally identified wi

Assessing formal service providers' readiness to address IPV among women with disabilities in Sweden: A mixed-methods analysis.

Women with disabilities face a heightened risk of intimate partner violence (IPV), yet formal support systems often remain ill-equipped to address their specific needs. This study assesses indicators of readiness among formal service providers in Sweden, including healthcare, social services, shelters, the police, and the Centre against Violence, to support women with disabilities who experience IPV. Employing a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design, the study combined qualitative interviews (N = 18) with a national survey (N = 1,151). Data analysis was guided by an adapted version of Co
