Etiological Diagnoses Versus Descriptive Developmental Diagnoses.

Jane is a 7-year-old girl who presented for a developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) evaluation because of parental concern about developmental delays and atypical behavior. Jane is a former term infant who was small for gestational age. She experienced some initial feeding difficulties and was discharged home from the nursery at 5 days of age. As a toddler, Jane was mildly delayed in acquiring gross motor developmental milestones, but she was more significantly delayed in acquiring fine motor and adaptive developmental milestones. She began receiving private occupational therapy (OT) servi

Neural Cell Models of Specific Reading Disabilities: Identification of Cellular and Transcriptome Alterations.

Based on post-mortem studies, a long-standing hypothesis on the biological bases of specific reading disabilities (RD) has been that alterations in neuronal migration alter language neural circuits. However, there are questions concerning the original studies (small sample size, comorbidities). Further, this idea has not been strongly supported by current genetic studies. In this study, we test altered neural cell phenotypes using cells derived from two pairs of siblings strongly discordant for reading-probands with severe RD and their strong-reader siblings. We observed significant difference

Artificial intelligence and twice-exceptional (2e) learners in educational settings: a scoping review of an emerging evidence base (2020-2026).

Twice-exceptional (2e) students are intellectually or creatively gifted and also have one or more disabilities, and they require provision that develops talent and addresses disability at the same time. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly promoted as a route to personalized instruction, and its adaptive character appears conceptually well suited to the heterogeneous profiles of 2e learners. Whether that promise has been examined empirically with this population has not been established. This scoping review asked whether and how AI technologies have been reported in educational researc

Supporting Neurodivergent Learners in Pharmacy Education: a Commentary.

This commentary discusses the importance of embracing neurodivergent (ND) learners in pharmacy education, identifies barriers and gaps within current educational systems, and offers practical strategies to foster all-embracing and fair learning environments across didactic and experiential settings. Literature about ND learners in pharmacy education is limited. Despite legal requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act and related legislation, institutions remain unprepared to support ND learners, with persistent gaps between policy and practice. Common reported barriers include defi

Outcomes Assessment of a Novel, Multisite, School-Based Inclusive Instrumental Music Program with Peer-Mentoring for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial skills developed in an inclusive learning environment can benefit students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). However, the inclusion of students with disabilities in classroom-based learning environments often remains challenging. OBJECTIVE: This multisite, cohort-based observational study, spanning a school year (August-September through May-June), examined the psychosocial development of 60 new musicians-students with IDD who participated in an inclusive school-based instrumental music program with peer mentoring for the first time. METHODS: St

Yogic-Breathing Techniques and Meditation in the Management of Dyscalculia: A Narrative Review.

TEXT: Dyscalculia is a mathematical learning disorder that affects an individual's ability to understand and solve arithmetic tasks. Traditional interventions focus on educational strategies, but the role of holistic approaches persists underexplored. This narrative review examined the potential benefits of yoga-based breathing techniques and meditation in managing related cognitive and emotional functioning. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to gather evidence on the effects of yogic breathing techniques and meditation on learning disabilities, particularly dyscalculia. T

Using Tactile Charts to Support Comprehension and Learning of Complex Visualizations for Blind and Low-Vision Individuals.

We investigate whether tactile charts support comprehension and learning of complex visualizations for blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals and contribute four tactile chart designs and an interview study. Visualizations are powerful tools for conveying data, yet BLV individuals typically can rely only on assistive technologies-primarily alternative texts-to access this information. Prior research shows the importance of mental models of chart types for interpreting these descriptions, yet BLV individuals have no means to build such a mental model based on images of visualizations. Tactile c

Exploring the policies and procedures in providing pharmacy services to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people in Metro Manila, Philippines.

OBJECTIVES: This paper aimed to explore the knowledge, existing policies, and practices in community pharmacies and primary healthcare centers regarding the provision of medication needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) patients, including potential ways to improve such services. METHODS: Critical case sampling was employed in conducting in-depth interviews of 27 participants from selected cities in Metro Manila, Philippines. Recorded voice interviews were transcribed verbatim and underwent manual thematic analysis supported by MAXQDA. KEY FINDINGS: Four key themes pertaining to ways of com

Why learn sign language? Medical influence on hearing parents decisions.

Early access to sign language is considered fundamental for the development of deaf children; however, around 90% of them are born in hearing families who do not know this language. As a result, early language development of deaf children can be profoundly affected by their lack of exposure to an accessible language. This study sought to examine how hearing parents of deaf children relate to sign language and the process of learning it. A descriptive, analytical, and relational study was conducted, following a qualitative approach based on Grounded Theory. Interviews to 13 parents of two schoo

The voice within: an online ethnography on the experiences of Deaf students in a public high school in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This online ethnography narrates the learning experiences of Deaf students in a public high school in Quezon City, Philippines, and the institutional factors that affected the learning processes and deliveries for Deaf students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Targeting Nitric Oxide Synthase 2 Reverses Learning Deficits in an Oligodendrocyte-Focused Model of Costello Syndrome.

Oligodendrocyte (OL) functions greatly improve information processing in the brain; consequently, compromised OL biology negatively impacts brain function in various diseases. Young-adult Costello Syndrome (CS) patients present with learning disabilities and regression of psychomotor skills in correlation with abnormal brain white matter, delayed myelination, and dysmyelination. This suggests the involvement of OLs and myelin in abnormal brain physiology during and beyond development; however, the neuropathophysiology of CS remains poorly understood. Replacing the endogenous HRas gene with the

A Teacher Training Program: Early intervention for deaf/hard of hearing children.

The present action research study had two main aims. The first aim was to develop and implement a Teacher Training Program for teachers providing early intervention (EI) services for deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) children. The second aim was to investigate the contributions of the Teacher Training Program to the participating teachers, the principal, and the parents of DHH children. The research was conducted at a Special Education and Rehabilitation Center (SERC). The participants of the study included eight teachers, one school principal, eight DHH children, and their parents. Data were collect
